andrekandre··on Alan Kay: Shannon gave us a way of dealing with noisy channels [video]

  > Computing is held back by corporate legacy, and PARC was lucky to build all its own hardware and software.
this really resonates... apple makes both the hardware and software, is massively profitable and yet swift is basically a much much better c++ in a lot of ways. and xcode is just totally absurd excuse of a development environment...

is it better than before and welcome improvement? yes, but fundamentally conservative compared to what parc was doing with much much less...

andrekandre··on What About Rails?

  > It's a tool, dude. Relax.
it has been my observation, in the short years i have worked in tech, that some people really worship technology like religion/god and think it alone will solve all the worlds problems (hint, it wont)
andrekandre··on What About Rails?
this whole shove chatbots into everything trend will get reversed or watered-down after a couple years like all the other trends

most of the time, a bad (or non-existent) ui is responsible for even a need of a chatbot; its lazy (and i say this a someone who was forced to implement a chatbot!) from a product design perspective.

that being said, could some complex apps benefit from adding both a command-line style interface to 'pop open the hood' so-to-speak for advanced users and provide a chat interface for beginners as well? yea why not?

andrekandre··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
this whole data center in space thing is like a huge red siren screaming BUBBLE!
andrekandre··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
once these books have all been scanned and destroyed, doesn't it mean later competitors (and free-as-in-foss alternatives) wont ever be able to catch up?

it seems really sad that these books data isnt open in the first place...

andrekandre··on The Business of Building God

  > If the labs end up with only 1-2 models ahead of the others, while spending 10x more than last year, that can only go on for so long. There just isn’t enough money in the world!
intuitively (to me anyways) isn't this one big reason why the top companies are putting out signals to slow down frontier development? its getting to costly and hurting chances of turning a profit come ipo time?
andrekandre··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly

  > all that remains is the ugliness of stupid power
in the end, in the world of business and politics hasn't it always been these types of people that eventually float to the top? capital/power begets more capital/power...
andrekandre··on What Sun got wrong
i mean, imagine if your a business and suddenly you had to expense > $200 a month for every employee just to run a compiler, or you could just buy a computer and use it for everything else and that as well…

i think llms will be the same.

n=1 but at $work they are forcing us off enterprise and on to personal claude max that caps at $200 and people are like “you don’t need the top end models anyways just use the cheaper one for coding”, which begs the question how long till those “good enough” models run locally (with relative ease) and our company can cut that huge monthly cost with just the macbook pro they are gonna buy anyways.

andrekandre··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM

  > Capitalism isn't an ideology
your confusing trading/markets with capitalism; they aren’t the same thing, and it definitely has ideology(ies)

andrekandre··on Jev-Leftpad
nowadays i can’t even start a day without a fresh cup of jev in the morning…
andrekandre··on Jev-Leftpad

something like “if x > y then x else y”?
andrekandre··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
you will be assimilated
andrekandre··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
5 years of (200/month) tokens at that price, meanwhile an rtx 5090 pc is about half that… hmm

but i wonder how much these token costs are sustainable or not, it may be in the long term cheaper to have your own hardware if token costs go up (and hopefully hardware gets cheaper again)

andrekandre··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
maybe its the verb?

what about `exclude()` or `keep()`?

in those cases its less ambiguous (to me anyways) that returning true means 'yes' to 'keep' or 'exclude', whereas saying yes or no to filter is like 'filter to exclude or include?'

thats my take anyway

andrekandre··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds

  > amnesia is driven by materialist consumerism
anecdotally, but i see this everywhere not just in tech...
andrekandre··on Towards Self-Driving Codebases

  > resulting in 10GB stored in a few days for what should have been like 5 MB of data
something for all those new datacenters to take care of (only half sarcastic i'm afraid)
andrekandre··on Towards Self-Driving Codebases

  > Why does it feel like we've forgotten how to automate things?
everybody is too busy everyday fighting fires to garden all those standard automations; its much "easier" to just throw it at an llm and move on (just saying what i see)
andrekandre··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"

  > I always struggle to remember if ‘filter’ keeps elements that match the condition or removes them
if you had parameter names maybe it might help?

`filter(where:)` like in swift...?

andrekandre··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
thanks for the thoughtful reply ^^

yes, regardless how one feels about "ai", its obvious to me its basically gasoline being dumped on this "faster and more" culture we are all suffering from...

andrekandre··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
> obsession over quantity and speed over everything else

i think this is a problem larger than just programming; we see it everywhere in western(ish) culture more and more ime....

  > We're souless automatons feeding a machine god.
whats the machine, capitalism?
andrekandre··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master

  > something as mundane and non-violent as computer programming gets compared with violent combat
ever worked at s large corporation?
andrekandre··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
not that i disagree, but its funny because i just came back from a presentation from a "chief ai officer" where he boldly stated that ai is the next big abstraction for programmers (even had fancy charts and tables to boot)
andrekandre··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously

do these ai-startups require a lot of capital?
andrekandre··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin

  > cause your business to really spend a lot of time shepherding the tech over the finish line
some may be better than others, but isnt this basically true for all these 'multiplatform' systems? i have nightmares of all the time it took with handling platform-boundaries/integration and lots of other grinding...
