andreilys··on Ask HN: Have you ever worked under an abusive boss?
When you have to handle someone with kid gloves that requires more time & effort than someone has.

There’s a reason most execs write curt emails, b/c they have 1001 things to handle and your feelings rank low.

Toughening up is about acknowledging that your emotional well being is not everyone’s #1 priority. You are responsible for that, and nobody else.

andreilys··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
Except when it does matter, say for example you become a politican or work in a corporation that has valuable IP.

All of the sudden, private details about you can be weaponized and used as blackmail in order to carry out the will of a state actor.

It really doesn't take much creativity to think about how this information can be weaponized against you.

andreilys··on Wrecked by Success? Not to Worry
This makes sense to me. The literature on status indicates that high status individuals/animals experience all kinds of positive effects on their health (especially when benchmarked against low status peers).
andreilys··on The Value of an Undergraduate Degree
Well they seemed to have done it, I know plenty of startup founders that have bootstrapped with less than that.

The stamp of approval from Thiel and his network help of course, and is likely more valuable than the $100k but for a lot of these students it gives enough runway to tinker for 2-3 years before landing product market fit.

andreilys··on The Value of an Undergraduate Degree
You don’t need to go to college to do any of that.

The same can be accomplished with a year of travel and a year of internships/apprenticeships.

Also I think at this point it’s safe to say that a college environment does not in any way shape or form engage diversify. It tends to be a monolithic culture that is hostile to contrarian views that may disrupt may d disrupt the status quo.

andreilys··on The Value of an Undergraduate Degree
Plenty of thiel fellows have started billion/multi million dollar companies (figma, ethereum, luminar, upstart, etc.), so it seems that $100k had been enough for them.
andreilys··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Elon owns 54% of the outstanding stock of SpaceX and has voting control of 78% of the outstanding stock of SpaceX [1]

So yes, for all intent purposes he is their employer.

andreilys··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Reselling != scalping

The system would work fine if there weren’t rent-seeking parasites who offer no service other than taking tickets off of the market that would go to regular people.

andreilys··on What we learned in studying the most effective founders
“All Happy families/founders resemble one another, but each unhappy family/founder is unhappy in its own way.”
andreilys··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Scalpers buy with the intention of flipping tickets for higher prices.

They are effectively rent seeking parasites that distort the market and make things worst for regular people.

There’s nothing wrong with reselling tickets if something comes up, but if you buy up bulk tickets to flip them for profit that is scummy behavior.

If this is considered a publishable paper then the bar for that publication must be quite low.

All those metrics are down post covid because the era of cheap and easy money is over.
andreilys··on A chat with Ray Dalio
America has been running large debts forever but has only become bigger and more successful post Covid

Citation needed, not clear how America has become more successful post covid.

andreilys··on Group of white and Asian parents sue BPS over exam school admissions policy
Education as a prestige/status signaler is zero sum.

If everybody had a Harvard degree, then it would lose its value.

Which is why they’re so adamant about not counting online degrees earned through EDX as “real degrees” because it would devalue their status signaling education.

I would argue we already have high quality education access. Go on YouTube, coursera or any other platform and you can find incredible resources.

What we don’t have a lot of is high paying/high status jobs, and as a result we’re put through a brutal tournament model, where one of the games consists of getting into a high-status college.

andreilys··on The great vegan diet ‘con’
Yes but how about your cognitive performance?

Surprisingly, the children who were given the soup containing meat each day seemed to have a significant edge. By the end of the study, they outperformed all the other children on a test for non-verbal reasoning. Along with the children who received soup with added oil, they also did the best on a test of arithmetic ability

In fact, there are several important brain nutrients that simply do not exist in plants or fungi. Creatine, carnosine, taurine, EPA and DHA omega-3 (the third kind can be found in plants), haem iron and vitamins B12 and D3 generally only occur naturally in foods derived from animal products

andreilys··on DALL-E 2 generates images of Kermit The Frog in various films
it would lack the novelty and playfulness of a good human creative work, and it likely would be very shallow in its themes.

Simply tune the parameters associated with novelty and playfulness and you’ll get the desired result.

There’s nothing inherent in human creativity that can’t be replicated by an AI. Most creative work is derivative and remix’s prior art.

This is a good short video on the phenomenon of remixing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ2GuvUWaP8

andreilys··on Working on the weekends – an academic necessity?
not worry about $ as much

AFAIK the wages PhD stipends are pittances and make it very difficult for someone without money to survive, especially for non-STEM programs. If anything doing a PhD makes you worry more about money because you can't earn enough to survive

andreilys··on Ask HN: How worried are you about the upcoming recession?
From a geopolitical competitive lens, no.

All that would mean is a replacement of the world order and an even further degradation of quality of life.

andreilys··on Why isn’t new technology making us more productive?
The difference between a car right now and a car 30 years ago is that you can now play angry birds on a tablet

Except we now have cars with self-driving (however limited, it's a massive improvement over a car from 30 years).

Another interesting thought experiment is, how many digital services, modern tech and so on would you be willing to trade for something mundane, say your dishwasher, a hot shower, the toilet, a car, soap, if you could only have one or the other?

I would absolutely choose a mobile phone over any of those things.

andreilys··on Extend your runway, cheap money is over
Even without VC funding you still have debt based funding which is a lot easier to get when interest rates are at all time low.
andreilys··on Kids are far behind in school
Serious question, what are you learning between kindergarten and 2nd grade that's so important?

I remember my time there being effectively day-care, I learned more outside of class than inside it. The only real benefit was socializing with kids my age but otherwise everything I learned in those 2 years could've been taught in a week.

andreilys··on I'm quitting my PhD
A PhD arguably gives you the opportunity to run very fast into one particular direction. Much longer than you would be allowed to run in any commercial setting.

It seems like most cutting edge research (and the ability to run fast) in machine learning is done in commercial settings these days, not academia.

andreilys··on I'm quitting my PhD
another good thing about a PhD is that people who have advanced degrees earn on average 50% more than (1.5x) people without advanced degrees

This is bad statistics 101.

The confounding variable in a lot of these cases is wealth (or social class). Someone who grew up upper class and got their PhD is of course going to earn more than someone who grew up in a trailer park never graduated high school.

The reality is that for a lot of people getting advanced degrees leads to nothing but wasted time and a lifetime of debt that they can't discharge.

andreilys··on Invade Haiti, Wall Street Urged. The U.S. Obliged
The US government works for the Bezoses, Gates, Buffetts and Musks of the world.

Yes they definitely work for three new-money tech billionaires and not the old money generational wealth families that nobody talks about.

andreilys··on We’re discontinuing the Stablegains service

andreilys··on Another stablecoin loses peg – DEI team working to restore the peg
Economists cause more harm than good, id rather they be not in charge of anything important and left to play in an Academic sandbox and publishing papers nobody will read.
andreilys··on Another stablecoin loses peg – DEI team working to restore the peg
Most economists have no idea how monetary policy or macroeconomics works.
andreilys··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
There are different incentives and dynamics at play for a public vs. private company.

A privately owned twitter will behave very different from a public one.

Great example is that the bot problem contributes to MAU's, which impact Twitter's quarterly earnings. This means that they *can* solve the bot problem, but don't want to solve it right away lest it impact their metrics.

So ultimately the decision to take the company private will help execs stop focusing on short-term earnings and focus on long term values

andreilys··on No one expects young men to do anything and they are responding by doing nothing
who creates these expectations? It’s always some loose definition like “society” or “elite”, or some other handy wavy grouping of people.

I suggest reading the book "Manufacturing Consent" to get an understanding of how expectations are shaped by mass media.

Just like there was a concerted effort to create public support for war (WW1/WW2/Vietnam/etc.), there are concerted efforts to shape public opinion and create expectations within our broader culture about morals/values/etc. Sometimes it's explicit, and often times it's implicit and picked up via signaling cues (i.e. high status reporter says X, to go against X would mean no more invites to fancy dinner parties)
