anbotero··on Podman Desktop celebrates 500k downloads
Keep it up!

What trickery does OrbStack[0] use to be fast?

We went back to Podman Desktop because of the license[1], but the interactions on macOS are almost as slow as Docker Desktop.

As for Podman itself, happy users here, and our workflows have been working for a while now. We are only missing faster local development.

anbotero··on Pyroscope and Grafana Phlare join together
Hey! It was alright, but at least for Ruby it didn’t report on the memory allocation of the calls, which is what we were looking for in the first place. We do not use it anywhere else, we only tried it for this pesky legacy system.
anbotero··on Pyroscope and Grafana Phlare join together
I’m really, really liking this.

I’ve been testing the whole stack on a local server, finding kinks, documenting workflows, because I hope I move us to this soon. Now with Pyroscope I would love to try it out even more. I kid you not, we were just testing Datadog Continuous Profiling for our legacy Ruby application not two days ago and it was quite lackluster.

Not saying this will be better (have yet to try), but I’d prefer to support and report feedback back on this for a brighter future for our community.

Keep it up!

anbotero··on Improving Students’ Learning with Effective Learning Techniques
Absolutely this. I use it on my Kindle all the time for this same purpose, and come back to some of them when I know the Chapter they are in and I need to refresh a concept or phrase.
anbotero··on Godot 4.0 Stable
It’s great to read this. I dabbled and make demos from time to time (in other engines) and show them to friends.

Could you list some of those downsides you mention? Not just for me, developers sometimes also read things here on HN that are *not* on their Issues or on their radar at all.

Have fun!

anbotero··on Robot Framework: generic open source automation framework
I think it all boils down to execution and the company’s mindset and skillset.

I was also a Quality Engineer for a time, and one of our bigger projects was to implement precisely a Natural Language system or something so that PMs or whoever wanted to “live in the future” could write their tests directly in the User Story.

What we did was create a large set of commonly used “phrases” to interact with systems, be it UI or APIs, which we coded the actual test framework for, document them for anyone wanting to write User Stories (in Rally platform, like JIRA), the instructions on what to do if a phrase didn’t exist for their case, etc. It took us 6 focused months, but we delivered, and people were happy. Of course, we are talking about technical PMs, PMs that met with designers and set standard guidelines, PMs that required API documentation and read it, and the like; just not “coding much” PMs.

Albeit this being a company where we already wrote automation tests right next to the developer’s timeframe for their own coding, where a feature got both code/tests right around the same time, 99% of the time, so it was easier for people to take advantage of features instead of shallowly complaining.

So, yes, I concur with you that probably your case would be better if everyone were a developer, I don’t really see the need for those kind of DSL, but if you reeeeeeally need to have other people intervene, and want them to focus more on their end of the bargain (not coding), I think these DSLs have their place: Assuming the whole company has the stomach for it.

anbotero··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
I also use Firefox Focus on Android. Latest Android versions took away the option to NOT have a default application to open files/links, so I had to pick Firefox Focus as default, even though I immediately open it in Chrome for things I want to have a session active for.
anbotero··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
I literally just switched back to a Chromium-based browser because Google Meet background features are not supported on Mozilla Firefox. Everything else, I like or I’m quite content with on Firefox. I so just want to have Google Meet with background blur on Firefox, it’s the only thing I need to fully switch back.
anbotero··on Tech layoffs keep stacking up
Why do you expect jobs situation to get worse in 2023? Shouldn’t these corrections happen now so companies plan their runway to ~2 years?
anbotero··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Yes, to me this would be a better addition to the article, explain the tool real goal.

Now... you need metrics and analytics over what’s going on with your products. This sounds like something that helps address that somehow, staying anonymous from what it looks like (it says it has no identifiable information linked to people), but even the contract linked makes it hard to understand.

anbotero··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Doesn’t matter much: Damage done; you can even see from other comments here already. They probably didn’t check the so called contract linked, much less the article itself which is pretty, pretty light on any kind of legitimate details.

Complain, I don’t know, about actually having a contract with ICE, perhaps? More meaningful that whatever the article complained about. I would complain about what the quote from the spokesperson really mean, that doesn’t really say what the product does, making us look at the contract to even try to get a proper summary.

I love these Office Space references
anbotero··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
It quite pisses me off that some features they've played with, disabled, let me hanging, like Reminders, sometimes it was disabled for Google Apps accounts (even paid ones). I used to be able to leave reminders while using headphones, and one day it stopped working. These days it seems they enabled it again, but seriously, I spent like year and half without being able to set Reminders using OK Google.

Someday I stopped being able to review applications on Google Play too. This is not my imagination, I have reviews I can see I made some years ago, and then suddenly... sorry, you can't. What the heck? You're technical geniuses, if you don't really want to associate a domain that I may lose and someone use in the future, hey, use an internal ID instead, but don't screw me over.

So I'm screwed because even if I actually pay, they use me as tester for their free service. Truth be told, even if I lose these paid apps, subscriptions, images/videos, history, whatever I lose... I'll just switch to full usage of my personal, not-on-my-own-domain account. How can I be a paying customer if I can't even get same features than non-paying? Come on...

anbotero··on What Did the Past Smell Like?
I don’t abhor those smells per se, but I hate when they stick to surfaces so everything smells like that. Yes, we could “tolerate” them, but why should we? If it were for short periods of time, sure, I guess, but long-term? There are less aggressive, more pleasant and soothing smells to enjoy

anbotero··on Apple surpasses Saudi Aramco to become the most valuable company
I think in this particular case, it’s cash, or at least the promise from a bank or fund or whatever the hell it is, that they can count on that money in cash whenever they one.
anbotero··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
Look for “SEO” in this same thread, it’s the only other comment mentioning it. I hate giphy.
anbotero··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
ML? For what? It’s not like it finds the GIF you’re looking for. Serious question.
anbotero··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
Finally! THIS, rightgif, is exactly what at least 90% of people wanting to use. But another commenter on this very thread mentioned they pretty much just did SEO. Arrgh, hate it.
anbotero··on Discovering the brain’s nightly “rinse cycle”
Exactly my point
anbotero··on Discovering the brain’s nightly “rinse cycle”
I enjoy my sleep thoroughly and I sleep 7-8 hours a day. Still, I think it’s a waste of time, and I don’t mean work productivity, but life. You sleep, wake up, and surprise, a third of the day has just gone by and you didn’t even notice.

I recognize the need to sleep, but I personally just wished we could develop a way to keep going with your day without sleeping. If that were physically possible, I’d just meditate some few hours daily instead of sleeping 7-8 hours.

anbotero··on Hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia
But don’t you think they are cool to see? Now people in Colombia can enjoy from these creatures without leaving their country, even...! Sure, now they have to deal with them, but now they can invest in containing them what they would spend for traveling...!

PS: This is just a entrepreneur-minded parody to another post here.

anbotero··on Hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia
When I said consideration it was obviously referring to us as conscious beings. Still forest fires happen, species invade other spaces (people think it’s only human-triggered), and other things happen, but we can most of the time at least try to assess what it would mean for US to introduce such drastic changes. The only delusion is thinking it’s cool for Hippos to forcefully co-exist in another habitat different from where they came from.
anbotero··on Hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia
It’s say life should be more about harmony which yes, it can bring change. But change brought without consideration is just one force ruling indiscriminately over others, and that is bad.

(SRE here, but I work on databases as well all day)

anbotero··on The Rise of SQL-Based Data Modeling
It’s not their job to optimize the database, but it sure is to recognize the basic bottlenecks in their scripts. My training addresses things they have to take into account, and how to approach us when they think they need optimization to what they are doing. It’s just that some of them don’t do it. I made it so it’s part of their onboarding process, so they should know who to contact for these things, yet some of them start literally complaining instead of contacting the team that could help them out.
anbotero··on The Rise of SQL-Based Data Modeling
I do something similar nowadays, and I’ve established a process for them to consult to us whenever these issues occur, it’s just that some don’t do it, they don’t care about anything. Of course, I’ve created processes that make it easier for my team to deal with people like that, but it doesn’t take away from them not knowing SQL
anbotero··on The Rise of SQL-Based Data Modeling
know SQL is kind of hard to describe. I also have business people that know SQL, yet don't use (or request, if they knew there are not) indexes. So we get this amalgamation of monstrous subqueries all hitting the same unoptimized fields, of course, blocking the database.

I created a mini-training for the onboarding process, so they could at least look for things without killing all our read replicas. But that’s just one step; some people are just not good at it.

Fear... fear is having everyone blocked because one person is killing all the replicas for them to work on.

anbotero··on Announcing RDS/Aurora Snapshot Export to S3
I just wish DMS supported real-time data synchronization for utf8mb4 on MySQL... That really destroyed my workflow with errors when I moved to utf8mb4 (requirement) and then had to stop using DMS altogether. It’s pretty much the only thing I used from that services.
