analog8374··on AI Makes Me Sad
AI makes something that was hidden, visible.

It's a thing inherent to thinking, language, machines and computers.

The thing is, it looks like life but it really isn't.

That fact is being rubbed in our face now. Treat it like life and it will make you sick, sooner or later.

Sooner now, because of AI. So thank AI for making the badness more immediately visible before it can do more damage. So you spit it out immediately instead of swallowing it for years.

analog8374··on Ten lines of code that changed my world
My first shipped code was an art thing. C64 Basic. Poke random characters to random locations on the screen. Random colors, screen and border too. On infinite goto loop. Radio Shack (IIRC) in the local mall used it on all their C64s.
analog8374··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
can concur
analog8374··on Earth is tearing apart beneath the Pacific Northwest
subduction zone. a million years buried a mile underground, pulverized by lava and rocks, will erase literally any crime.
analog8374··on Attention is all you have
Attention is the axis of reality. Focus on a thing and it gets realer. Ignore a thing and it fades away.
analog8374··on Measure internet censorship
to hear it from the users, ya, it's all about censoring the other team. so that's why censorship is good.

to hear it from the mods, it's about being responsible for what's said to the admins above. so that's why they need to have censorship power.

analog8374··on The senior engineer death spiral
i voice to text. in hopes of getting the thing to stop capitalizing every third word because it's somebody's trademark, i told it to stop autocapitalizing. So here i am. blame Google
analog8374··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
They should be paying them to meditate. That would be the more healthful and revolutionary course.

Regular daily intellectual concentration is much the same be it game, book or reddit. And it makes you crazy. You withdraw from reality.

analog8374··on Measure internet censorship
I want an unmoderated space. Or rather, I want the tools of moderation to be in the hands of the users instead of a central authority.

Giving an anonymous rando the power to censor my conversation is abhorrent. And it's absurd that most people are ok with that.

analog8374··on Measure internet censorship
"Dictatorship" is the standard forum design. Reddit, HN, X, Lemmy... All of them. And censorship is common. We literally prefer it that way. I think it's to create a solid blame trail. I think that's a necessary thing.
analog8374··on Communication by means of modulated Johnson noise
oh well caught!
analog8374··on Communication by means of modulated Johnson noise
A cacophony of meaty slaps in morse-code.
analog8374··on Show HN: Snapdrop: Instantly share files between devices. No setup, no signup
I like localsend mself
analog8374··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
it has helped in that I can visualize more clearly and with better control, than I could before.

do you practice?

analog8374··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
shikantaza (zen meditation, basically) has significantly improved my ability to visualize.
analog8374··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
repairing a giant 2-story deck. scary and strenuous, perhaps. But it beats office work.
analog8374··on Is it time for a Luddite Renaissance?
it's literally whatever is approved by the central committee. which is actually pretty smart when you think about it
analog8374··on Is it time for a Luddite Renaissance?
Amish luddite. Technology is vetted by a central committee before the public is allowed to use it.
analog8374··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
I was at LOWES the other day with a used can of paint that I brought for color matching. obviously used. beat up and stained. at the checkout the computer halted the checkout process said "did you forget something in your cart?"

yeah fuck that. also fucks self-checkout. are we so poverty stricken as a society now that we can't afford to pay cashiers?

analog8374··on Fuck it, make it anyway
in art you don't know what you're making. you are creating, you aren't just moving towards a goal. that's the power of it and that's why it feels so good. now an llm might assist in that, but you got to be there with your hands on it, deeply. there is no other way.
analog8374··on Creativity is the new moat
ai is the natural evolution of language. it's the next level of that device.

creativity is you wandering the aisles of walmart, pushing your cart past shelves full of all kinds of devices.

analog8374··on Who People Talk to When They're Struggling
deepseek!
analog8374··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
in a roguelike game, my incentive for playing is the discovery of weird new stuff. this might be the opposite of procedural. because procedural is just the same old stuff in new combinations. right?

how would we get a procedural thing or an AI thing to spit out truly new weird cool stuff? connect it to a good random number generator?

analog8374··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I'm listening to OK Computer right now. Came upon this reply half way through "Let Down". Hmm.

In my own procedural explorations, the solution to the 10,000 bowls of oatmeal problem is to manually curate them and give the user only the exceptionally good ones. It's a tedious lot of work.

analog8374··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
It's like reading the title of the post and skipping reading the actual post. She embodied a popular identity, offered a popularly STEMmy business plan, and the rest was skipped.

Word to wise entrepreneurs.

analog8374··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)
I dislike lamb but the rest sounds great. Maybe I could sub beef.
analog8374··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
In Orwell's 1984, control of the language was central to control of society. Newspeak and such.

Consider recent quibbles over pronouns.

analog8374··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
we clearly need to design better salmon.
analog8374··on Aging brains blend memories together instead of just forgetting them
Things seen at a distance blend together, as opposed to just disappearing.

So that's an interesting parallel. Says something about memory.

analog8374··on Exit the Cave
You ever spend a decade working on something really great? I mean something truly brilliant and clever and next-level. And you bring it all the way to solid results. And it's real and beautiful. And nobody cares.

I have. I think that's the dev parallel here.
