an4rchy··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
I still do think reviews are the best way to get aggregated feedback on established (companies, products, restaurants etc).

In order to normalize reviews for myself, I try go through them and sort by least and quickly skim a few reviews to see if it was something that was very personal/one-off to the affected person or more systematic and then it gives me a better picture. Obviously, no perfect way but would love to hear if/how others take review feedback into consideration.

an4rchy··on Questions to Ask Before Joining a Startup
Awesome post. Definitely good timing as I was about to start an Ask HN around this as I go through the process.

I've also asked about early exercise (83(b)) and term sheets, if there are bad terms i.e. liquidation pref, anti-dilution etc but not all companies are willing to share this info.

Also, I am curious about why companies don't just have a black box formula output generator, with your equity offer value, saying this is our projection and based on our current termsheet if the company exits at this value your options are worth X, with the option of dilution built in.

an4rchy··on The Art Institute of Chicago Has Put 50k High-Res Images Online
It's great to see museums working towards spreading the reach of their collections and reaching new audiences.

Also for folks interested: SF MoMA was doing something similar where if you texted them a word they would send you a picture related to it (from their collection)

https://www.sfmoma.org/send-me-sfmoma/

The museums could also start selling prints online as well, perhaps create new means of funding for the museums

an4rchy··on How to explain the KGB’s amazing success identifying CIA agents? (2015)
Interesting read!

With the digitization of data, it's hopefully easier to create a digital trail but I was wondering how they would handle this in terms of a paper trail, especially because a lot of things might need to be backdated.

Also, wouldn't other employees in the embassy also know based on a similar pattern or the fact that this person abides by a different set of rules on a day to day basis?

an4rchy··on Google's interview system: it's not about solving the problem
I agree with the possible liability aspect but if they are doing it already, i.e. taking notes or rubric scoring, then it's just a matter of sending a summarized version of that and hopefully it's feedback from multiple people and not just one person's opinion.

The negativity may likely exist from no response/lack of feedback -- which can be frustrating for ppl that spent time/effort), but at least as the previous poster mentioned some people do appreciate feedback.

Also, recently noticed that companies have automated questionnaires asking how the recruiting process was or can be improved -- wondering if there's any improvements based on feedback.

As a side, it's been kinda interesting to read glassdoor responses for how people were treated/felt during the whole process (timing, professionalism etc...)

an4rchy··on Google's interview system: it's not about solving the problem
I am not sure if this is in the interest of any company but why not provide feedback, as it can only help the interviewees in the future and the companies attract better talent.

Even if it's not standardized, a rubrik across X attributes with a scale and a number. (Which is what I am assuming they are doing anyway -- as it sounds likes the interviewers are rating them across different dimensions)

Not sure if this is some sort of a thing to do with liability but the interviewee can get generalized feedback.

Ex: Technical skills (2/5),Communication skills (4/5) etc. and they can improve on the relevant dimensions or compare notes with other companies / candidates as well.

an4rchy··on Japan's Hometown Tax
Super interesting policy!

I was thinking about why Tokyo doesn't do the same and reciprocate, thereby competing with the smaller towns.

I do realize that Tokyo/(any other big city) wouldn't want to do this till the number of people opting in hits a threshold within their city but maybe that is the equilibrium point. Does anyone have any insight into that?

an4rchy··on Algorithm recovers speech from a potato-chip bag filmed through glass (2014)
Definitely some interesting applications.

Sort of orthogonal but is there a similar way to get sound from seeing someone's lip's move in a video -- would it then be possible to recover audio/conversations from old video only files?

Edit: Guess they can read lips via AI https://www.techemergence.com/machine-learning-that-learns-m...

Now getting the high quality sound from just video would be amazing.

an4rchy··on A Tiny, $25 Million Mistake (2014)
The Caesar's case that he mentions was an interesting case study, they totally tried to get away with it -- in that case it was the $450 million mistake.

an4rchy··on Review: A Counterfeit, $100 iPhone X
This was fascinating, makes me want to actually try and build a frankenstein phone. Thank you for posting!
an4rchy··on Review: A Counterfeit, $100 iPhone X
It's amazing how good it looks and yet is so cheap. Apart from the display and Face ID, I wonder how much it would cost to source used iPhone parts, perhaps even older version (iPhone 6 etc) and build out the internals for this phone.

Also, I'm curious, but if anyone has any insight, is this even profitable at $100 for them or is there a some sort of loss leading play for data behind such counterfeits.

an4rchy··on Agent on Demand – Negotiate Your Dream Job Offer
What is the pricing/fee structure on such a service?
an4rchy··on Zoox and Its $800M Robo Taxi Dream [video]
It might have been budgeted in or part of some other discretionary spending limit (employee perks, parties etc) and this is so small that it doesn't matter.

I have seen termsheets where the founders need board/investor approval for spend over $XXXK, so that it stops/limits misuse of capital.

This could have been board approved, if it needed to be or else investors/boards can always ask for it to be returned and mandate approval for future spends above $X in categories outside of regular business spending.

an4rchy··on The Glory That Was Yahoo
I'm always skeptical about this argument because it can be seen either way, if the old world companies stuck to their vision/mission they might just be disrupted by new/alternate business models/technology and if they try to experiment (Ex: Google) it can be seen as not having a clear vision. There are very few companies that can sustain through 50 yr cycles but even having a clear vision may not help a company succeed if someone else renders their business useless.

Mission/Vision should evolve and sometimes it might be considered luck and sometimes foresight.

Ex: Nokia: Pulp Mill -> Rubber/Tires -> Cables/Electronics -> Phones

an4rchy··on Facebook Sued by Investors Over Voter-Profile Harvesting
Can any lawyers summarize the actual lawsuit?

What do these investors want exactly, more money?

The stock price went up by any measure, from Feb 3, 2017 to Mar 19, 2018, so it can't be compensation for that. Unless they are willing to give those gains back?

an4rchy··on Travis Kalanick is joining the real estate startup City Storage Systems as CEO
Is this a startup or just an old-school company rebranded as a startup? Couldn't find a website for them (unless it's storage racks).
an4rchy··on Initial AMD Technical Assessment of CTS Labs Research
This was great on AMD's part. They responded to all of the issues and also put it into perspective.

Also, it looks like they are in-line with releasing fixes (in a couple of weeks) way under the 90 day disclosure timeframe.

an4rchy··on Facebook CEO Zuckerberg conspicuously absent as data scandal grows
They were planning to use Cambridge Analytica to make it happen /s

In all reality, the common public is probably indifferent to his running, at this point, and I believe this current series of events hasn't changed much.

an4rchy··on Google bans cryptocurrency ads
After reading about the timeframe, I now think this might be a reason they are blocking ads starting in June, if something is bad, why not stop now, instead of at the start of a new quarter. (when these ads may have likely scammed people for a few more months)
an4rchy··on Lyft is building a self-driving platform with auto supplier Magna
Is this another round of investment, from Magna, or has this already been accounted for in the previous raise?
an4rchy··on Google bans cryptocurrency ads
I wonder how much of current ad revenue (Google/FB) is coming from cryptocurrency related companies and how this might negatively impact their earnings.

However, it may be a small amount or they both factored this change into their forecasting before announcements.

an4rchy··on The ICO paradox and how to fix it
Disclaimer: Not too familiar with ICOs, and this might be ignorance on my part but genuinely interested in learning.

My understanding was that ICOs were basically a way to invest in companies/ideas smiliar to startups, and therefore reap the benefits if the project succeeds, ie upside.

Were the Siafunds given to investors as a way to reward them for investing in the company and therefore accruing in value as it grows and succeeds?

If so, is that a way to back out valuations for the company/product? (If that is the case, is it true that as more people use siacoins more revenue generated -> more profits -> value of Siafunds goes up)

an4rchy··on Security Researchers Publish Ryzen Flaws, Gave AMD 24 Hours Prior Notice
Agreed on the losing money part, in general, but in a stock as volatile as AMD, I feel like there is an opportunity for this type of action, may not be the case for others.

Also, as nothing has been verified about the report (from AMD), there is still the potential for this to move either way.

Great username BTW

an4rchy··on Security Researchers Publish Ryzen Flaws, Gave AMD 24 Hours Prior Notice
I agree on the premise of moving the market but they don't necessarily need to be only short sellers, they could have hedged both ways and still made money.

They could have exercised puts if it went down (which it did in the morning) or bought stock/calls both before the site release and in the case of it going down because they knew it wouldn't be a concern or dispelled by AMD.

Unless, this is truly a flaw and in that case, they can still buy more puts and just wait for AMDs official response.

an4rchy··on How Your Returns Are Used Against You at Best Buy, Other Retailers
It sounds like there might be a few false positives in this algorithm, which negatively impacts the retailers from a publicity standpoint.

Also, can someone verify this but I thought that systems like this can be easily manipulated,i.e buying with cash or buying online with PayPal, different credit card etc, as that is PII and companies can't use it to identify you or reject your claims, unless tied to a specific loyalty account.

an4rchy··on Potent malware that hid for six years spread through routers
It has been very interesting to see a lot of hardware/firmware based vulnerabilities coming out recently, although they have been around for a while.

Different vectors have different advantages but I wonder if there will be a push towards more hardware based anti-malware/vulnerability detection devices.

an4rchy··on Potent malware that hid for six years spread through routers
Not being sarcastic but sometimes it's about quality, not quantity.

Usually something this sophisticated is used to target specific individuals/organizations as they aren't generic botnet/bitcoin mining operations.

They might be after specific info and after they get it, they might even wipe their tracks as it's better to have a tool that nobody knows to look for than one that can get on as many computers as possible.

an4rchy··on Coinbase Index Fund
Shouldn't this be pretty simple with an API and a basic script?

You can get the overall market cap and percentages based on something like Coinmarketcap and then just set limit orders to buy/sell rounded to nearest coin requirement.

an4rchy··on Coinbase Index Fund
Interesting. The fund creates another potential source of revenue for them and at the same time, the more people that invest in it, the higher it's likely to go.

Why would anyone choose to invest in a fund that is basically the same as investing in the 4 currencies they currently support directly (without fees or limitations on trading)?

an4rchy··on The wealthy are using pawn shops to finance their business ideas
What is the typical interest rate in these situations, both in banks and pawn brokers?

I read somewhere that it's usually 200% APR, for pawn brokers, so if you are inherently paying ~20%/month in interest I feel like this is a very bad value proposition.
