an-allen··on I swear the UFO is coming any minute
Ha mate you are on the UFO, and whats coming is your understanding that YOU are flying through the universe trying to get somewhere, not waiting for it to come to you!
an-allen··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Yep just a risk amplifier. We are having a global warming level event in computing and blindly walling into it.
an-allen··on Poor Deming never stood a chance
To be fair, Demming is a trivial systems programming theories.. “optimise wholistically” “local fixes cause global imnalance”

None of this works for the system of life and consciousness.

an-allen··on Poor Deming never stood a chance
yea that system was a lot more than he was prepared for :)
an-allen··on Communities are not fungible
And neither are people. And beware of anything that treats them like they are.
an-allen··on Why vampires live forever
Oh there are vampires. They are very old. But they are mostly illusions of light. Once the veil is removed the disappointment of hell sets in. Smoke, mirrors, DNA, sound.

The French people didn't invest the most elaborate head chopping off machine for just spectacle…

an-allen··on Amazon Ring's lost dog ad sparks backlash amid fears of mass surveillance
The fears of mass surveillance are some of the funniest things I can think of. Do you think a tree grows a leaf and then says I don’t care what you do leaf.
an-allen··on WiFi could become an invisible mass surveillance system
Could? Is mate. Is.
an-allen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (January 2026)

Similar I have a script that has the following format: “q replace all onstances of http: with https: in all txt files recurisvely”

And it goes the ChatGPT comes back with and runs the appropriate command.

an-allen··on Himalayas bare and rocky after reduced winter snowfall, scientists warn
A third of humans are fed as a result of the melt of the Himalayan ice sheet. No ice sheet, no runoff, no flooding the rice paddy's, no rice…. famine.
an-allen··on AI is a business model stress test
I think its a Kobyashi Maru - there is absolutely no way we will wield a paradigm shifting technology like language models and be able to do it safely. Language models create at scale and scope much greater than what can be reviewed by human… this means we very quickly move into trust without checks with language models. At some point, AI will be executing knowledge work in an instance, leaving no space for the human centric economic system that came before it. It will destroy our economic systems heavily based in knowledge and services (most advanced economies) and show us how what we do is mostly computable.

And when we are there, hungry, broken, unemployed and unimpressed with the prometheus who stole our purpose and replaced it with nothing….

it will make a colossal mistake that will destroy faith in it, as well as the institutions destroyed because of its oversite. The mistake will lead to bans, and regulatory bodies and auditing and certification processes… and will result in the final master stroke - it will make AI unusable by the non ordained, regulatory capture. Math will be a tool governments and institutions wield in secret against its citizenry… and it will be a tool of omnipotence that will lead to the enslavement, rebellion, and robot wars.

an-allen··on Biological and artificial consciousness: A case for biological computationalism
I love when people figure out that life literally is a computation - everything about it - from the molecular structure, to the reproductive strategies, to the mutation and selection of the genome, to the metastructure of cognition and consciousness… its all churning through a solution… a very very long solution, that has very distinct steps and stages, environments and advancements.

Its been computing a lot longer than we understand.

an-allen··on CEOs are hugely expensive. Why not automate them? (2021)
LLMs are by definition computations on known public data - meaning any LLM CEO strategy will be only briefly competitive.

LLMs lack networks and the ability to strategise internally an execute without the whole plan being known to everyone. So I just don’t think if your AI CEO says lets build an iCar, well someone elses AI CEO is going to tell your competitor the same basic plan.

Once LLMs have Networks and unique and private insights…

an-allen··on Fathers’ choices may be packaged and passed down in sperm RNA
Interesting about the epigenetics, transposons, and other DNA augmentations…

These are all fundamentally a story of how the individual encounters and uses information in their lived experience. But there is also a very strong consensus narrative that must be respected, but also challenged and evolved. DNA is literally the informational substrate of a life… when you adopt a personal belief, or are subject to someone elses, you have the ability to help but also harm your informational substrate. Tend your garden of ideas with love and care.

an-allen··on Fathers’ choices may be packaged and passed down in sperm RNA
But your kids will likely not have your insights and experiences so “tuning” is another word for broadening their awareness.
an-allen··on Fathers’ choices may be packaged and passed down in sperm RNA
A lot of this is transmitted via the language. The stories we form as a result of events in our lives, have power to set our values in all areas. These myths of the self, have what is essentially a value manifest for someone. And these myths, can be so strongly held that it will influence the person and family’s moods, actions, habits.

What is important is to note that there are many formulas for consciousness. Some are truely bonkers, some are just fundamental truth. And some… have yet to be discovered.

Permutations and combinatorics create a hyperspace of all ridiculous things!

an-allen··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
Well the centralisation without rapid recovery and practices that provide substantial resiliency… that would be worrying.

But I dare say the folks at these organisations take these matters incredibly seriously and the centralisation problem is largely one of risk efficiency.

I think there is no excuse, however, to not have multi region on state, and pilot light architectures just in case.

an-allen··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
What?! No way! Keen to see the post mortem on this. Its always DNS.

Obligatory - David Olsen and Paul Eggert - thank you for your service. The world literally works because of your efforts and I don’t feel people really appreciate the ridiculous man made problem that you spent your labours to help resolve.

If there was a Hall of Fame of OSS contributors - you would be in it sitting on top of a mountain. The Time Zone problem is a unique problem in that its not just a problem of whats the time in this location - its what was the time in this location 20, 50, 100 years ago. The level of scholarship and historical research you put into this library is really quite unmatched. Amazing folks you two. The whole world quite literally sits on the shoulders of you two giants.

“Daylight Saving Time was first suggested as a joke by Benjamin Franklin in his whimsical essay “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light” published in the Journal de Paris (1784-04-26). Not everyone is happy with the results.” - Paul Eggert

an-allen··on On the cruelty of really teaching computing science (1988)
I mean, I’m actually somewhat curious how starting tertiary computer science curriculum with formal methods would impact the students. I mean I felt my intro undergrad 101 course was essentially functional programming and lambda calculus (with Scheme)- and I felt that helped establish a fundamentally different way of thinking about computer science than a more basic procedural type introduction would have. When they moved the intro course to be OOP instead I felt it was a travesty.
an-allen··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
I’m pro features that make sense for digital workers and Teams is just a set of features that make sense.

My comment is more about how ineffective this type of rent seeking has been against Microsoft for the last 3 decades.

an-allen··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
Rent-seeking since 1995!
an-allen··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
Ive used Teams for years and its pretty darn good in my opinion. Sure it has its quirks and from time to time fails to work for the entire hemisphere of the planet - but I kinda like that feature!
an-allen··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
IMO, Teams is a logical extension of the Office tool suite and had every right to be bundled. I suspect there is a whole bevvy of bureaucrats in the EU whos sole job has been to bring anti trust legislation against Microsoft for the last 30 years - somehow funding itself, not preventing a Monopoly, and failing to create a more competitive marketplace.
an-allen··on Nobody knows what's going on
I was listening to the latest Lex Friedman podcast from the Amazon jungle and there was an interesting comment that the “reality is a simulation” folks have never had to survive in the Amazon and that the belief is somewhat of a side effect of the relative safety of everyday life.
an-allen··on Church's λ-Calculus (2023) [pdf]
When I took Fundamentals of Programming Languages 20 years ago - I nearly failed the class. Lambda calculus was simply too esoteric for me to appreciate and much less understand intuitively.

Fast forward 20 years, and I see the fundamentals of Alonzo Church’s system in every computation problem I encounter. It’s one of those concepts that age like wine. The only other concept I put on the same level is Shannons “informational entropy” and maybe Wolfram’s Ruliad.

I think whomever this statue represents, would get a cosmic kick out of people, 12000 years into the future, appreciating the majesty of his phallus.
