amsterdorn··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Quite the generalizations there. A third of Americans also "can’t even afford a one week holiday".
amsterdorn··on Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90%
+1, this bothers me more than it should.
amsterdorn··on Show HN: isometric.nyc – giant isometric pixel art map of NYC
Would be cool if you could adjust the sun's position & see the effect on shadows.

Could even extend it to add a "night mode" too, though that'd require extensive retexturing.

amsterdorn··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
> “Enhanced Leads Identification & Targeting for Enforcement (ELITE) is a targeting tool designed to improve capabilities for identifying and prioritizing high-value targets

What constitutes this "high value"? & valuable to who, ICE agents with an itchy trigger finger?

amsterdorn··on Google's new 'Aluminium OS' project brings Android to PC
Google you're a NA company, we say "aluminum".

Also an OS built around an "AI core" sounds like a privacy nightmare.

amsterdorn··on Google Antigravity
> feels like a vibe-coded VSCode fork

That's 100% what it is, and rushed at that. Competition is (generally) a good thing though, only time can tell which IDE comes out on top.

amsterdorn··on Europe to decide if 6 GHz is shared between Wi-Fi and cellular networks
This isn't true, 6GHz uses 5.925 to 7.125.
amsterdorn··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
Curious about how accessible these tests are in Europe. Living in a country (NL) that doesn't value annual checkups makes me assume detailed, preventative blood testing like this is hard, let alone possible to get in non-extreme situations.
amsterdorn··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
> Apart from basic libraries like xp.css and paint.js, it's all original code.

I wouldn't say this constitutes "original code". AI agents are trained on open-source software; to apply them and present this project as your own work is misleading.

amsterdorn··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
Corporate greed back at it again!
amsterdorn··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
Their savory dishes aren't great (looking at you stamppot) but they do sweets well! Poffertjes, oliebollen, stroopwafels, etc.
amsterdorn··on Show HN: Stretch My Time Off – An Algorithm to Optimize Your Vacation Days
Nice tool! Some feedback:

- The subtitle telling me I can "stretch [my] time off from 20 days to 42 days" is quite misleading. This tool doesn't magically give me more vacation days.

- Much of the page isn't helpful (in NL there are 6 consecutive months without holidays), would suggest only showing months where "stretching" is possible.

amsterdorn··on Shrunked JavaScript monorepo Git size by 94%
Honey, I done shrunked them kids
amsterdorn··on Hoodmaps: Publicly Annotated City Maps
Yep, I don't like it. Amplifies racist and ignorant voices.
amsterdorn··on Ultra high-resolution image of The Night Watch (2022)
I've visited the museum many times and I find it to be excellent!
amsterdorn··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
By suggesting it's "mostly useful in the beginning" you are admitting that at some point they will copy+paste it to their project. So the convenience factor is a moot point.

I see the value, I just think that's an unrealistic price given the current features.

amsterdorn··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
You think the chance that 5 people think $6 is a reasonable price is lower than one person thinking $30 is?
amsterdorn··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
$30 is far too expensive for a GPT-4 wrapper.

I'd much rather pay for ChatGPT, run Vite locally and prompt "You are a tailwind assistant that generates CSS..."

amsterdorn··on The anatomy of a 2AM mental breakdown
This is the key lesson. Your own deploys mean nothing if you link to another CDN for parts of your application.

You handled it well OP, the silver lining of incidents like this is the grab bag of valuable takeaways!

amsterdorn··on FlightAware Leaks Customer Data (Name, Email Addresses and Passwords)
You're mixing up a manually imposed punishment on companies vs exposure/impact, e.g. identity theft.
amsterdorn··on FlightAware Leaks Customer Data (Name, Email Addresses and Passwords)
I'm not saying your observation is inaccurate, but as a society we _let_ these companies continue to do whatever they want without consequence.

1% of users in a data leak having their identities stolen or 1% of the cities in the world becoming uninhabitable due to heat isn't enough to demand action, what about 10%? Is 25% where we draw the line?

amsterdorn··on FlightAware Leaks Customer Data (Name, Email Addresses and Passwords)
How does this explain that it's a bad analogy? Both of these are true and can apply to both.

Read up on the SSN leak from last week, I didn't give them my data. And it can have real consequences.

amsterdorn··on Google took three months to remove scam app that stole over $5M
This, end of story.
amsterdorn··on FlightAware Leaks Customer Data (Name, Email Addresses and Passwords)
I don't like this take, companies use this same mentality to justify inaction with their impact on climate change.

Who decides what a "severe" outcome is? The companies themselves? Why don't we hold them to a higher standard?

amsterdorn··on 0xCAFEBABE & 0xFEEDFACE (2003)

amsterdorn··on UI elements with a hand-drawn, sketchy look
HN is like Reddit, people will repost old things that aren't theirs until the end of time.
amsterdorn··on Show HN: ChatGPT UI for rabbit holes
Interesting concept, but in practice the experience is just a simplified Wikipedia hole. I enjoy all the hyperlinks in Wikipedia articles: they let me decide how deep I want to go rather than get a short summary with only a few pre-generated links.

This adds a lot more barriers to knowledge exploration (and the GPT is likely trained on Wikipedia anyways) and doesn't provide sources.

amsterdorn··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
Querying DOM nodes is inherently more complicated than a regex on unparsed HTML.
amsterdorn··on What Is Wrong with Everyone?
Seems the conceptual disconnect is them thinking it means a note being "out of the tune" as in incorrect/wrong, as opposed to the physical instrument itself.
