amsheehan··on The end of Framework Churn
I think you mean "You should never use Django unless you're building a social network". A lot of your arguments seem to only apply to the old guard of frameworks Django, Angular 1, etc...Where there would always be "The X way of doing it..."

All of the popular modern JavaScript frameworks are easy to learn, increase flexibility and creativity, are themselves mostly high powered versions of the core language (no useless knowledge after learning), generally small, and in no way are Facebook, Google, or Microsoft about to abandon React, TypeScript, Angular et al...

And that's just front end frameworks. Express and Koa do nothing to mystify idiomatic JavaScript or server development, and are just implementations of popular, easy to understand programming patterns.

amsheehan··on The end of Framework Churn
React is an ideal version of web components in a world where ui = f(state)
amsheehan··on Text-only CNN
My upvote was only for the first sentence.

Web infrastructure is not broken, it's just being abused. That abuse leads to some pretty incredible technology though.

amsheehan··on Show HN: Orbit – Weekly list of software contractors ready for immediate work
Does Orbit do anything to protect contractors from bad code bases?

One benefit of contracting through a company is a long due diligence process before starting. This is helpful to set realistic expectations. Is there any process at Orbit for something similar, or is it Grindr for devs and work?

amsheehan··on Mega Man for TempleOS
Weird. Makes me want to start a crusade.
amsheehan··on Keyframes: Delivering scalable, high-quality animations to mobile clients
I wonder what this means for animation studios, or edit houses. Obviously most dev shops don't have a need for full time animators, but just as obvious is that a lot of devs don't know animation fundamentals outside of how to implement an animation without jank.
amsheehan··on This Tech Bubble Is Bursting
How many people with a WSJ login actually read this before commenting?
amsheehan··on This Tech Bubble Is Bursting
Market cap !!= economic drive either.
amsheehan··on This Tech Bubble Is Bursting
That may be true for products from the industrial era where the end user isn't directly affected by software.

Companies that want to keep customers (in some cases keep customers alive [cars 'n shit]) are going to have to start caring about software as it becomes the conduit for every interaction their customers have with their products. It's not just social networks that are getting funded now—it's companies that build the previous poster's top five drivers of the US economy. I believe you have to call pretty much any company in those verticals tech companies to some degree.

amsheehan··on Don’t design like a programmer (2010)
If the user isn't going to take the security of the app you built seriously, you the app developer has to.

It never looks bad for the user to get their data breached. It always looks bad and can do lasting damage to a company if an application suffers a breach.

amsheehan··on Jarvis: Personal Assistant in Python
Jasper is another cool project that has a bit better of a foundation. You can make little Python modules for pretty much anything.
amsheehan··on Show HN: FWD:Everyone – Making email into a social network
Interesting thoughts. I think one of the draws of email for us is that it is an open technology. The other platforms for communication are great too, we just think that part of emails staying power is the result of it having open protocols.

We also think a lot of really great things get talked about over email that aren't inherently private. Conversations that showcase deep knowledge and understanding through the lens of relationships. For us, that's the magic.

amsheehan··on Show HN: FWD:Everyone – Making email into a social network
Thanks for the comment! Currently we don't have a way to cc FWD:Everyone on a thread for the purposes of making it public. It is in the pipeline though!

One of the reasons we do it through the gmail api is because if we accepted plain text emails through the typical forward process, the messages can be edited. On FWD:Everyone, you can make redactions, highlight text, and omit entire messages, but you cannot change what the messages say.

We think authenticity is vital to the site, and if you'd like to revoke access to your gmail inbox, Google provides a novel way to do so here:

amsheehan··on Ask HN: What should we fund at YC Research?
Materials science. Specifically batteries and capacitors.
amsheehan··on Hipster Mattresses: Why?
I'm picturing a piece of plywood—but made of Walnut, or Teak, or something equally delightful.
amsheehan··on Tech industry's persistent claim of worker shortage may be phony
It is also true that computer science curriculum doesn't really cover anything but a specific subset of the software development jobs out there. The same may not apply to other STEM fields, but it is certainly true for software.
amsheehan··on HTML is done
I disagree, but not strenuously :)

Purescript compiles down to javascript but helps save programmers from themselves by introducing a better type system as well as great data structures, and functional paradigms

Typescript adds static typing and OOP

CoffeeScript...is syntactic sugar? (okay maybe I agree with the coffeescript sentiment)

amsheehan··on EFF to Congress: Stop the Cybersurveillance Bills
I agree 100%

I often argue with a lobbyist friend of mine about their (lobbyists) role in the ecosystem.

Right now the paradigm seems to be hire lawyers to serve in Congress because lawyers know how to write potential laws. Leave it to lobbyists to convince them of the policy they should care about.

I feel that if we had representatives with more diverse backgrounds, and we surrounded them with lawyers and staff to explain how to best translate their ideas into bills, we'd be better served.

There would still be special interest groups trying to convince them of what to do, but I feel it would avoid situations like SuperPAC's buying clueless politicians, and clueless politicians being appointed to committees they know nothing about.

amsheehan··on President Obama creates new cyber sanctions programme
If that's true, why does propaganda exist?
amsheehan··on Can Oregon's tiny houses be part of the solution to homelessness?
This probably wouldn't do much to solve the homeless problem in NYC. In a neighborhood like the East Village or Williamsburg, I could see it being rented for $1,000/month.
amsheehan··on Reactive Machine Learning via Jeff Smith
I wish I could get my k-nearest neighbors dog to shut up already.
amsheehan··on Why junior developers are learning bad habits from Angular
1: You shouldn't be using bootstrap, even though you can with angular.

2: What do you need to do in the front end that can't be accomplished the 'angular way'? I'm not sure you understand what monolithic really means. The beauty part of angular is that you can use it as little or as much as you'd like in your web applications.

3: Angular 2 is going to be preeeetty much only ecma6. Also, understanding angular means you understand AMD, digest cycles, etc... totally applicable to other frameworks.

4: What are you even talking about?

amsheehan··on Ask HN: From zero to IT career, what is the fastest path?
My friend and colleague Alex3917 was a YC non-technical co-founder (not sure which class) then decided he wanted to learn how to code. He's now really good at it and you should read this blog post on how he did it:

Who doesn't?
