amne··on For the record: You just ordered me to cause a expensive outage
my google discover feed used to fill up with stories like this one: "my boss told me X so I Y". It took a while for the "I'm not interested" feedback loop to kick in.

Recent example: "my boss told me I'm not allowed to work from home so I uninstalled teams. now he's mad he can't reach me after hours"

This entry even the title has a typo in it. These mostly read the same. I think the prompt is something like "this guy was told by his manager to yada yada. he was not having it so he yada yada. make an article of about 5 to 8 paragraphs"

amne··on Car dealerships revert to pens and paper after cyberattacks on software provider
wait.. why is "rev up their larger more experienced product team to compete" bad?
amne··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I see the complaint naming individuals by name.

I wonder how far the chain one can go to punish individuals for something like this .. can a dev or qa tester get fined for this? Should they get fined?

amne··on What happens to latency if service time is cut in half (2022)
Having read it more than once now I think utilization is a ratio, maybe?

But that means the unit for S needs to be seconds/request such that:

utilization(ro) = S * arrival_rate(lambda) = seconds/request * request/seconds = bare ratio.

More coffee required.

amne··on What happens to latency if service time is cut in half (2022)
so the unit for Utilization in your example is "active request" ?

I just wish the article didn't assume units are easily inferred which would imply most readers are familiar with the subject.

amne··on Developer Takes 'Retro' Concept to New Level by Creating Physical Winamp Player
I agree there's a lot that would go into it. Which is why I was so disappointed with the implementation.

As someone who watches content from This Old Tony, Inheritance Machining, GreatScott!, Marius Hornberger and so on I would watch a series of someone building this. That's how I see you can subsidize a project like this these days.

I mean .. brain fart?

yes, I meant radio buttons. of course!

I'm laughing so hard at myself now.

amne··on Developer Takes 'Retro' Concept to New Level by Creating Physical Winamp Player
I was so disappointed as well when I saw he just grabbed a screen and called it a day.

I was really expecting some mechanical tricks around the play/pause buttons liked I had on my old cassette player to make them xor-like .. so disappointed. And frustrated I just don't have the skills or time to make one but would love to see someone actually do it.

amne··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Watched Tim Cook and MKBHD interview and Tim did say something along the same lines: the average smartphone user doesn't care about the technology branding but what can it do and that's what Apple aims for.

And I agree with their goal here:

Dall-e how much now? it can do what? text to image? can it do emojis? vs Genmoji: oh .. it can do emojis. nice!

same with "Rewrite" and so on.

This is a large numbers problem that is not yet visible. You can't have everybody walking and talking. There would be too much noise (think crickets, cicadas, toads, etc.)

I'm not going into cycling/running and talking .. that's just not how things work when you need to breathe.

Driving and talking to a phone to then have it recite back to you 10 minutes of details you can just glance at but would be dangerous to?

If I'm relaxing on a couch .. i'm using a device. And please don't come back with "play me a chill song" as a fancy use case.

What I'm trying to say is that voice is not it and the only other kind of interaction I'm looking forward to see evolve is neuralink-style. In the sense that it needs to be wireless / non-invasive for mass adoption. That's it.

amne··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
So far the only reasonable place I can think of where I could find myself actually using voice to control anything is on the toilet. that's it
amne··on After 6 years, I'm over GraphQL
This was also my issue with APIPlatform (php/symfony ecosystem tool to generate REST endpoints for your Doctrine entities). Nice OpenAPI spec autogenerated at first glance but very sterile and hard to use once you really needed to understand the business reasons behind some normalization choices.
amne··on Codestral: Mistral's Code Model
When I read

"My favorite thing to ask the models designed for programming is ....... None of them ever get it right"

I read "benchmark".

amne··on Controlling the Taylor Swift Eras Tour wristbands with Flipper Zero
drones? that's a whole 'nother can of worms but it could work if you really .. really .. really want to be part of the light show.
amne··on Instead of “auth”, we should say “permissions” and “login”
If you go that route .. your OIDC provider authenticates your claim. The website just trusts some specific OIDC authorities which you must use to create your identity.
amne··on Show HN: I generated API documentation for all Java packages
Compiled HTML? Sounds familiar.

In all seriousness, I miss the Contents-tab-style of navigation like I used to do with CHM ages ago.

There was this point in time such that when I opened a CHM I knew I was going to read chapters about use cases, examples, tips and tricks, gotchas and all the way at the bottom I would find the reference API documentation.

amne··on Alacritty – A fast, cross-platform, OpenGL terminal emulator
I gave it a shot on windows with wsl2. I hit some weird config gotchas because they switched to toml but didn't think it through too much (not a good sign). Then I just could not get my shortcuts to work with tmux and nevim. I use M+pgup/pgdn for session nav and S-left/right for window nav and instead of trying to break my config to get them to work I just gave up. I didn't see any benefits so went back to Windows Terminal.
amne··on The Downfall of DeviantArt
I struggle to understand how you can mark work as "not for AI training"? Might as well mark it as "do not get inspired by this".

If I'm a painter and I look at a picture of a drawing I'm going to catch some of the style, some of the color palette, some of everything. My next painting will inevitably have some influences from that drawing .. and the other thousands I've seen. Why is it because it's now done in binary is it any different?

amne··on Exercises to Learn Rust
But who's forcing you? Oh .. the companies jumping on the latest "in Rust" hype. I see.

Just do your thing and be good at it.

PS: There was this VSCode extension to do BI stuff in the IDE (quarylabs/quary) showed here on HN and once I saw the CLI core having "Rust-based" as a feature I just closed the tab. What does "Rust-based" even mean? The tool may have been good but Rust is not a feature.

amne··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
we use Teams and it's fine.

Just don't use the "Team" feature of it to chat. Use chat groups and 1-to-1 of course. We use "Team" channels only for bots: CI results, alerts, things like that.

Meetings are also chat groups. We use the daily meeting as the dev-team chat itself so it's all there. Use Loops to track important tasks during the day.

I'm curious what's missing/broken in Teams that you would rather not have chat at all?

amne··on URLhaus: A database of malicious URLs used for malware distribution
or wonder why weird routes like "/i" or "/bin.sh" are among the top accessed URLs in their monitoring dashboards
amne··on URLhaus: A database of malicious URLs used for malware distribution
I agree that is the likely outcome. It is interesting to me though that they're not concentrated on ports 80/443. There must be a reason why and one answer, from a comment below, could be that boxes hosting this already serve legit http content on those ports. Having this kind of traffic show up in http monitoring tools would make the hack obvious.
amne··on URLhaus: A database of malicious URLs used for malware distribution
I'm hearing more and more nice things about firefox lately. Been on chrome for the last 10 years or so but I might have to switch soon if they break extensions the way the plan to.
amne··on URLhaus: A database of malicious URLs used for malware distribution
To me this looks that for ~90% (eyballed) you just need to tell your browser somehow to stay away from any port other than 80 or 443. If some script/link-rel/src attrib points to a non-http(s) port just pop a warning to confirm you're ok with it. Is there a browser today with this feature?

Or go wild to neuter your browser and configure your firewall to allow only dst ports 80 and 443 for mozilla/chrome/edge/etc.

Also curious what are the performance implications for adding to your firewall about 2 million IPs or maybe a couple 100k if you're brave to do ranges.

amne··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure
All of that can also be achieved by pigeon post.
amne··on Show HN: CarCheck – Car Buying Checklist App
I'm wondering who is this for? Buying cars frequently is very niche and those people just remmeber what to look for. That's called experience. And then there's people buying every couple of years.

I think an app should be something that either helps you continuously (health tracking apps, home automation, etc.) but you don't access that much and apps that you access a lot (media, chat, calendar, a game or two). This is neither.

amne··on Roman Tyrian purple snail dye found in UK for first time
Anyone else read the title as "Roman Tyrian, exotic luxury house brand of dyes known for making dyes out of unusual extracts, maker of purple dye out of snail juices somehow, is finally selling his stuff in UK either because some ban on mistreating snails was waived or his beef with the king is over" ?? Just me? Thought so
amne··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
I didn't realize the lack of context so my bad.

I was trying to do some tests to compare kubernetes resource usage of nginx+php-fpm, nginx unit with php module and frankenphp (based on caddy). For reasons that are not relevant I need the service to be exposed on both ports 80 and 443 and do both plain HTTP and HTTPS. The host is not fixed because there is a public DNS but also the cluster-internal service name.

With nginx+php-fpm and nginx unit it was dead easy: here's port 80, here's a self-signed cert for TLS so listen also on 443. That's it. it works.

With Caddy it was so frustrating to see so many assumptions and "automatic redirects, trust me, this is what you want" and no obvious manual override that I just gave up. What I got working before I gave up was either only port 80 which is not good enough, either only port 443 which is also not good enough or both but 80 redirects to 443.
