aml183··on Show HN: A newsletter covering nuclear energy
Hi everyone; longtime HN user here. My co-founder and I launched Payload three years ago. It's now the leading B2B media company covering the space industry.

This week we launched Ignition, a media company covering the business and policy of nuclear energy. We are starting with a twice-weekly free newsletter that takes less than 5 minutes to read.

The first edition goes out on February 22nd.

Me + my cofounder started Payload last year to cover the space industry, from seed round to SPAC and beyond. Our first (and primary) product is a daily newsletter covering the business and policy of space. It's free and it takes ~5min to read.

aml183··on AI to hit 40% of jobs and worsen inequality, IMF says
I feel like this is said about every technology. It reminds me of this Silicon Valley scene: https://youtu.be/w61d-NBqafM?si=hCY58gE6b2pV9khm

100 years ago, nobody could imagine a job like computer programmer. Jobs will disappear, but new jobs will be created.

aml183··on Advertisers Don't Want Sites Like Jezebel to Exist
I don't understand this POV at all. Advertising provides a fair playing field for up-and-coming businesses. If startups could not advertise, how would people find out about it? If I want to start an eCommerce brand, people won't suddenly show up on my website. If I open a new club in a city, people don't just suddenly show up.

Without advertising, the world would be filled with large companies with no incentive to innovate because it would be impossible to discover their competitors.

aml183··on Journalists should invest in journalism startups, particularly now
I run a B2B media company called Payload and all our employees own equity in the company.

aml183··on Journalists should invest in journalism startups, particularly now
I run a B2B media company. There are tons of success in B2B media:

- Aging Media (sold yesterday to PE) - Morning Brew (sold for $75M) - Blockworks bootstrapped and just raised first round at $135M valuation with $25M revenue - Skift is a profitable media venture - Industry Dive (sold for $530M) - Politico (sold for $1B)

You also have established companies like Informa.

aml183··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
Interesting, would you prefer we cover more commercial space?
aml183··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
What you mean?
aml183··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
Thank you! Appreciate you being a reader :)
aml183··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
If you work in the space, he is one of the most well respected people.
aml183··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
Joe is one of the most knowledgeable person in the world on satellite imagery. He’s a must read.
aml183··on Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
I run Payload. We are a media company that covers the space industry. We only cover the business and policy of the space industry.

You can read our daily newsletter here: https://payloadspace.com/

aml183··on After chess, cheating rows rock poker and fishing
Adelstein is one of the best poker cash players in the world. He has a sterling reputation in the community and to my knowledge has never made an accusation like that before.

If you play poker, that call was either the greatest hero call of all or extremely suspect.

There is absolutely no reason to call in that spot considering the fact that many bluffs could be ahead of her hand such as AcXc for a flush draw.

Furthermore, she was backed in that game meaning that she doesn’t have the money to play in it. Who is backing you if you are calling over $100K pots with Jack high.

aml183··on Launch HN: Boostly (YC S22) – SMS marketing for restaurants
Marketing works plain and simple. The people who think they aren't affected by marketing are the very people it works on. Nobody wants to admit that marketing affects them which makes product development so difficult.
aml183··on Ask HN: How much info should founders share with early stage employees?
I run a media company. We are very transparent about our KPIs with employees. We only share things that have materialized. For example, we don't want to mislead about something that might happen especially in an early stage company where it's hard to estimate the accuracy of something happening.

I would never want to work at a company that is secretive about everything and thus we chose to be transparent.

aml183··on Tell HN: LinkedIn is automatically importing job postings into company profiles
But if you aren't technical, LinkedIn is still the best place to engage. I sell media advertising and LinkedIn is by far the best social media platform. It's also the best social media platform for our media organization because we are looking for B2B audience.

The real solution is building a B2B social media network. But that is very very hard to do.

aml183··on My newsletter is making $2k per month with 7k subscribers – AMA
I run Payload (http://payloadspace.com/). We are a media company covering the space industry. Congrats on all your success so far. For those reading this, there is a lot of riches in the niches. Just choose a topic that you don't think gets a lot of coverage and start writing about it. Two areas that come to mind:

- Geospatial - Nuclear Energy

Media/content -- to Ryan's point is being consistent. As long as you do that once you have PMF, you'll grow and make money.

aml183··on Starlink Maritime
I work in the space industry and follow SATCOM closely. This is a very competitive space. Companies like Viasat, Iridium and Inmarsat already work in this vertical.

SpaceX beats all these companies from a marketing perspective, but the big question is will a LEO operator provide better coverage than a GEO operator?

aml183··on You vs. A Billionaire: compare your income
During a period of low interest rates, yes this was the case, but now that rates are rising, this won't be as common.
aml183··on Show HN: A daily newsletter covering the space industry
Hi everyone; longtime HN user here. Me + my cofounder started Payload last year to cover the space industry, from seed round to SPAC and beyond. Our first (and primary) product is a daily newsletter covering the business and policy of space. It's free and it takes ~5min to read.

We raised a $750k seed over the summer (https://www.axios.com/winklevoss-twins-payload-business-of-s...). We've already covered nearly 10 recent YC alums and members of the current batch, which I think is a pretty symbolic sign of the times. This industry is at an inflection point.

Sign up and let me know what you think. All feedback welcome.

aml183··on Colorado to become first state to accept cryptocurrency for tax payments
Colorado is the second state to do this. I worked on an initiative in Ohio.

aml183··on Mysterious aircraft spotted at Area 51 in satellite image
Starlink is a telecommunication satellite constellation.

If you are talking about EO satellites, China is already launching them.

aml183··on New York Times to Buy The Athletic for $550M
Thanks, that’s awesome! That means the world to us. If you ever want to chat, just DM me on Twitter @amlewis4.
aml183··on New York Times to Buy The Athletic for $550M
I run a media company and I’m shocked at the purchase price! The Athletic and NYT make a lot of sense. NYT increased its total subscriber #’s and can make more money through bundling. I assume a lot of NYT audience might be interested in purchasing the Athletic and Vice versa.

But Axel Springer paid 5x revenue for Politico which was a better business with a “tech” product that had significant recurring revenue.

Athletic sold for at least 7x revenue. VCs got lucky here, but I can see the NYT doing very well with this deal!

aml183··on The Kessler Syndrome: Space junk in orbit
Turion Space (YC ‘21) just raised a seed round to address this issue. https://payloadspace.com/exclusive-turion-space-closes-4-7m-...
aml183··on The internet needs better rules, not stricter referees
This is hands down one of the worst takes I have seen in a while. I'm a big fan of Substack, but advertising isn't bad. I run a business that makes money from advertising. It's a good business model that benefits consumers and companies. I'm happy to go into detail if anyone cares.
aml183··on Show HN: Space Debris Visualizer
I started Payload, media company, in space industry. If you ever have interesting data that you think would make a good story, we are all hears. I really like this idea.

aml183··on Founder of $90M cryptocurrency hedge fund sentenced to seven years in prison
I was the other person profiled in the WSJ article they referenced. I remember when the article came out and I was like, "wow those are some impressive returns."

Sad to see that he was stealing. I think we will see more of these cases. There was a ton of very "shady" behavior in the industry. Regulators are only scratching at the surface.

aml183··on Launch HN: Epsilon3 (YC S21) – Software for spacecraft and complex operations
Thanks, we just built a new site and hiring some journalists. The MailChimp was just MVP to see if people cared about space news (which they clearly do).

Expect a much more professional site in the coming weeks.

aml183··on Launch HN: Epsilon3 (YC S21) – Software for spacecraft and complex operations
I run Payload Space. We are about to transition from a weekly newsletter to a media company. We hope to solve the problem that there is no real media coverage of the business and policy of space.
aml183··on Launch HN: Epsilon3 (YC S21) – Software for spacecraft and complex operations
They are the real deal! Awesome team and product.
