aml183··on Why is value flowing to ICOs? It's diversification of Bitcoin
The biggest tumbler closed down and none of the other existing tumblers are very trustful.
aml183··on Ethereum Price Climbs to $360; Crypto Market Cap Pierces $160B

aml183··on Investor Alert: Public Companies Making ICO-Related Claims
This is just penny stocks finding new ways to scam investors. ICO is the big buzzword.
aml183··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
Little Italy station is brand new. There was one on border of East Cleveland and UC that was very sketchy. It's now gone.
aml183··on Simple lays off 33 employees as top executives depart banking company
I love Simple, but definitely need a backup bank as well. I use their debit card for most purchases and love the real-time alerts. Also, love how they break down purchases.
aml183··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
Been to Chicago a few times and it's much different than Cleveland(Lived there for 4 years). Cleveland is more similar to Pittsburgh than Chicago. People in Cleveland associate with both the rust belt identity and the Midwest identity.
aml183··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
The murders mostly occur in places like East Cleveland or near Kinsman. These aren't places that people just visit. Why is Cleveland racist?
aml183··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
I live in UC. I leave from the Little Italy stop. The train is extremely clean. Someone who has also lived in NYC. The trains are magnitudes cleaner in Cle than NYC.
aml183··on Show HN: Managed Contracts and ICO as a Service
I am trying to be objective, but how is this on the first page?
aml183··on Ask HN: HNers who got their “Show HNs” on homepage, how is your site doing now?
We closed. Company was called Koalah.
aml183··on Meet the Man Traveling the World on $25M of Bitcoin Profits
Cryptocurrency is not a ponzi scheme. A ponzi scheme has an expectation that you'll be paid dividends or returns by the company you are investing in. Essentially, old investors are being paid by new investors. There is only one investment period for these tokens (eg. ICO).
aml183··on Ask HN: A good primer on cryptocurrencies?
This is good: https://www.arilewis.com/blog/2017/6/1/9si827ayimpdnbkzpahpk...

Disclosure: I wrote it.

aml183··on Coinlist
I don't know how you consider token sales mainstream. I wrote a post explaining how difficult it is to participate in a token sale. www.arilewis.com/blog/2017/5/15/my-mom-cant-buy-an-ico

It's very plausible that there could be a bubble, but just to give some context, the cryptocurrency market is valued at $68 billion dollars. The Bloomberg US Internet Index went from $2.948 trillion at its peak to $1.193 trillion. We are nowhere those types of valuations.

aml183··on To deflate the cryptocurrency token bubble, fix the market cap indicator
I apologize. You are right. I don't think Gnosis is healthy for the market. The incentives of the ICO were very misaligned. However, I still think the team is very strong and the potential is there. The market roots out companies that aren't up to snuff. Once you go below the top 20 crypto assets, the market starts dropping off fast.
aml183··on To deflate the cryptocurrency token bubble, fix the market cap indicator
There is not a bubble. Gnosis value has been cut to $100MM. The markets are working efficiently and punishing ICOs on valuation. Many ICOs have failed and not raised money. The market is focusing on these mega projects and not looking at the whole picture.
aml183··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
There aren't words to describe how good this book is. Must read!
aml183··on Brazil’s Love Affair with Uber Has Been Ruined by Kidnapping, Robbery and Murder
I took Uber while I was in Rio. It was perfectly safe. Uber Black is much different in Brazil than it is in the United States. You aren't getting into an Escalade, but typically a Toyota or Honda. Also, you could only pay via credit card. Maybe this is limited to Sao Paulo, but most Brazilians I spoke to were happy that Uber was in Brazil.
aml183··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any good personal finance apps?
It looks like it can be very good, but doesn't integrate with Simple and Robinhood. :(
aml183··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any good personal finance apps?
I tried YNAB, but too focused on budgeting. I'm looking more for expense tracking and potentially cash flow forecast. I think the issue is that I don't exactly know what I'm looking for but Quicken and YNAB didn't work for me when I tried it.
aml183··on Ask HN: How you got your first funding?
A local accelerator funded my company called Koalah. They gave us $25,000 for 8%. We applied via their online application and knew the founder of the firm.
aml183··on Change at Buffer: The Next Phase, and Why Our Co-Founder and CTO Are Moving On
I agree with you and even though their words may be a bit fluffed up, they really are transparent. It's hard to fault Buffer when they have been transparent with everything they do!
aml183··on Ask HN: How do you make software engineering recruiting better?
How do you find people especially passive candidates and how do we waste less time in the process? Matching company and candidate expectations.
aml183··on Ask HN: How do you make software engineering recruiting better?
I think the one caveat to that point is then every department will argue they should handle their whole hiring process. It could then become that HR becomes decentralized and each department has it's own HR person. I don't know if this is good or bad.
aml183··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2016?
When Breathe Becomes Air (https://www.amazon.com/When-Breath-Becomes-Paul-Kalanithi/dp...) and Man's Search for Meaning (https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/dp/...)
aml183··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
I just read the book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankel. I think it does a fantastic job of answering the questions about the meaning of life.

Viktor came up with the theory of Logotherapy which in a nutshell has 3 parts:

- Life has meaning under all circumstances, even the most miserable ones.

- Our main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in life.

- We have freedom to find meaning in what we do, and what we experience, or at least in the stand we take when faced with a situation of unchangeable suffering

aml183··on Ask HN: What should I name my newsletter?
I like it. What you think of Developer to CTO
aml183··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
I typically only send personalized emails to developers. Do you only respond to emails if salary range is listed?
aml183··on Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?
I'm a tech recruiter and job boards are one of the worst sources of candidates both for agency recruiters and companies. The best candidates aren't looking for jobs and hence will rarely visit job boards.

Companies like Hired & AngelCo are taking a marketplace approach to the hiring process. Arguably, the biggest issues with these processes is that you can't attract passive candidates.

If you can figure out a process that attracts passive candidates, you will win the recruiting industry. I think companies like HackerRank are in the right direction by being a platform for recruiting, but not in an overt way.

A lot of developers use HackerNews, but not for the recruitment aspect, but YC companies have an advantage because they can post to the job board.

As a developer, why would your job board be a massive difference to recruiters/companies? Chicken and Egg problem, but with subtle differences.

aml183··on Hiring Processes Are Also Engineering Processes
It's not an issue of time, but expectation. If it is clearly known that it will take 5 days to respond then the developer won't be peeved. The most important part of the process is to be transparent.
aml183··on Hiring Processes Are Also Engineering Processes
As a recruiter, I second this!
