amitutk··on Vim's 25th anniversary and the release of Vim 8
A HUGE advantage for vim is that you can login to any server, new or legacy, and it will have vim. At least it will have vi.
amitutk··on Apple removing battery life estimates following MacBook Pro complaints
I was waiting for an Anandtech review to get definite answers to questions about the new MBP.

Isn't it strange Anandtech hasn't reviewed the new MBP yet?

To find the time taken by jobs, it's simplest to just display current time in the prompt. You can quickly look at the time when the job start and the time after job ended.

There is a term for this: Backdoor bragging. Source: Jenna Maroney in 30 Rock.
amitutk··on India's richest man offers free 4G to one billion people
Wow, blatant PR!

India's billions have had access to Internet for several years now. While traveling last year in rural areas, I was able to get voice and Internet (3G), with data plans costing $4 per Gb. And I had the option to choose from 4 different providers.

Jio has definitely taken the lead in country-wide LTE, compared to HSPA+ from other providers.

This is more like evolution than revolution. Yet Fareed Zakaria goes on and on about richest man, most expensive home, cash generating business, etc.

Developers play games on this platform. The games are testing their technical competence. This info is passed/sold to recruiters. Hypothesis: If you are good at these games, you will be good at your technical job.
amitutk··on Amazon, Google race to get human DNA into the cloud
Your genetic information can not be used to discriminate against you.

"The President has signed into law the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) that will protect Americans against discrimination based on their genetic information when it comes to health insurance and employment."

amitutk··on Pinterest Raises $367M at $11B valuation
By taking $367m at $11b valuation, they have given away ~ 3.33% in this round. You may work backwards for previous rounds.

For initial rounds with no public valuation info, you may assume 25% of the company was given away in each round.

amitutk··on You can use vi mode editing in any program that uses readline
To automatically enable this for all term applications, create a file .inputrc in $HOME and put this:

"G": end-of-history

set keymap vi-insert

Aeropress is the best! Great tasting coffee, cheap machine, easy to clean and maintain.
amitutk··on Flipkart, Amazon of India, has sales of $100M in one day
To put that in perspective, if Flipkart has sales of $100M every day of the year, at $36.5 billion, it would be half of Amazon's e-commerce revenue of $67.9 billion [0].

amitutk··on Kima15: $150K for 15% in 15 days
The comparison of 15% for 150k vs 22% for 813k is unfair because it suggests that $5m valuation is entirely because of YC. The fact that many YC companies don't raise clearly indicates that YC helps but not a sufficient factor.

Since YC companies' approx valuation is $5m, the 80k note will take about 1.6% equity. So I would say YC is offering 98k for 8.6% (18k + 80k for 7% + 1.6%).

amitutk··on Soylent Closes $1.5M In Seed Funding From Lerer, Andreessen Horowitz
A toy food would be something that tastes excellent or fun to consume but no real health benefit, e.g., you could run a toy car in your basement but not use for commuting.

The worry with soylent or other food replacement is that it could outright harm you. Pfizer was developing Torcetrapib as a successor to multi-billion dollar Lipitor and it was on in Phase III that it was found to have adverse effect. It took 16 years of development, and close to $1B expense before the side-effects were discovered.

The soylent effort is great but if there are any health issues, they may come to the surface much later.

amitutk··on How the .0001% Made Its Money
0.0001% of 316,856,000 is 317 (after rounding partial human beings caused by mathematical division), close enough to 400.

amitutk··on Rosalind is a platform for learning bioinformatics through problem solving.
A key activity in bioinformatics is developing software tools for analyzing and interpreting data. If you have no knowledge of biology, you could still work as as soft engg. in this field.

If you are willing to learn basic molecular biology (structure of DNA, central dogma, etc.), you can get a job as a bioinformatician, bioinformatics analyst, bioinformatics engg, etc. where you could be analyzing biomedical datasets.

amitutk··on Rosalind is a platform for learning bioinformatics through problem solving.
Don't start with organic chemistry or genetics unless you have a 5-year plan. Basic understanding of molecular biology (structure of DNA, central dogma, etc.) will be enough to get started. Finally, here is a book (1) that describes many algorithmic problems in bioinformatics that a techie could relate to.

amitutk··on One Drug to Shrink All Tumors
I attended Dr Weisssman present this work a few years back at Dana-Farber. The somewhat long tl;dr is that while immune cells kill foreign material, normal cells have "don't eat me" signal, CD47, a cell surface marker. Cancer cells also have CD47, the "don't eat me" signal, which helps them evade the immune system. So, blocking CD47 would cause the immune system to naturally target the cancer cells, with minimal side effect.

Weissman's lab has an excellent scientific record so this is as good as it is going to get. The challenge now is to see if these dynamics work the same way in humans.

amitutk··on Ask HN: What is your preferred Python stack for high traffic webservices?
I am newbie to using python for web services. Will django be better to start with or should I consider pyramid/flask/uWSGI as suggested here?
amitutk··on Women are rejecting marriage in Asia. The social implications are serious.
Your theory fits with continued economic growth of United States.
amitutk··on Usability in Icons
as long as the convention is universally understood, it serves the required purpose.

also, imagine the amazement on your kid's (or grand kid's) face when you explain to them the "origin" of the save icon and how it represents a floppy disk which could contain a full 1.44 Mb of data.

amitutk··on Usability in Icons
No wonder kayak recently replaced icons for "details", "pin", etc., with simple text.

A/B test could also provide statistics of how well text v/s icon performs for non-trivial items.

amitutk··on HIV virus used to turn white blood cells into cancer serial killers
Such viral vectors are routinely used in the lab to knock in a variety of genes in the cell. Vector is really the packaging. What was important in the study was the actual antigen which has packaged in the vector.
amitutk··on Why I switched from Dropbox to Windows Live Mesh
I have used both Dropbox and Live Mesh, both work fine for me.

Advantages for Live Mesh: * Free quota is 5 Gb * I can choose the folder I want to sync, so my existing folder structure need not be tweaked

Advantages for Dropbox: * It is more popular so it is easier to set up a shared folder with someone.

amitutk··on SVG vs Canvas, what format to choose?
I have checked on Firefox, Safari, Chrome. It is just as fast on each, takes about 2 secs to plot 25k+ points.
amitutk··on SVG vs Canvas, what format to choose?
It's based on pure Canvas so there are no other requirements. I am still working on the documents but the source code is commented well. Right now it creates scatter plots but I may add other types of plots later. If you intend to help it in your application, I will be happy to work with you.

You could draw SVG markers at every point but with the DOM and everything, it just becomes very slow. protovis (a great SVG based library) mention the number 10,000 points at which SVG starts becoming unusable. I am able to plot 25k+ points.
