amitamb··on Privacy is the most important concept of our time
When cars were invented, producing them in large numbers, operating them efficiently and comfortably would have been a major concern while anyone talking about safety would be ridiculed. As it turned out engineering challenges were sorted out by economic incentives but car safety/pollution control had to be legislated.

In case of cars though wrong design choices in older cars could be phased out eventually but in case of online platforms the choices will remain there for more number of people in terms of market penetration given the explosion social networks are having in the last decade. Even if vast majority of people prioritize other things over privacy, vocal and knowledgeable minority need to raise the concerns of the choices unknowingly being made by less knowledgeable people.

amitamb··on India lifts ban on cryptocurrency trading
Nothing to do with that. This was Supreme Court decision and government will probably challenge it.

Even if Cryptocurrency helps in some dire situation arising out of COVID-19, facilitating cryptocurrency would be lowest of priorities for the government.

amitamb··on The Web is missing an essential part of infrastructure: an open web index
Apart from that Common Crawl respects robots.txt (which makes sense) so many sites you expect to see there are not indexed. Netflix, Facebook LinkedIn and many more. If common-crawl sees serious adoption those sites will modify their robots.txt but it's and chicken/egg problem.

amitamb··on Indian government to intercept, monitor, and decrypt citizens’ computers
India's Supreme Court Upholds Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/08/indias-supreme-court-u...

These are new powers and they are intrusive but they will likely get challenged in the court based on above judgement. Honestly though very few of average citizens care for government to take notice.

amitamb··on Show HN: I made a website recorder webapp you can use to create screencasts
I built something similar. Though you need to sign up to use it

http://www.castbin.com/

Great for an effort for a day though. Apparently I don't see mouse movements in playback.

amitamb··on Show HN: My Personal Hacker News Reader
I may have meant demo as a loose term meaning walkthrough of capabilities. It is definitely better than a screenshot.

According to Google demo (v) : demonstrate the capabilities of (software or another product).

I guess you found it useless. I would be happy if you can share your feedback to amit@castbin.com

amitamb··on Show HN: My Personal Hacker News Reader
Check out this demo http://www.castbin.com/casts/rdcTPbRz (It is made using my own tool.)
amitamb··on “This” in JavaScript
I understood these concepts by reading this book. It is great book for anyone wanting to go from intermediate to advanced or may be even beginner to advanced level

http://www.manning.com/resig/

You can go on using Javascript for years without understanding some basic concepts like "value of this does not depend on where that function is defined but the way it is called".

amitamb··on The JavaScript Trap
I am just trying to understand the difference. But why not consider Javascript extension of server side code. I don't think, anybody is stopping use of websites just because their back-end is not open source.

Is it because we own our desktop and we don't allow non-free code to execute on our machines? If not then it is just issue of proximity, your laptop vs distant data center. If it is more philosophical point that we should not use non-free software then using website running on closed source back-end is as much a problem as obfuscated Javascript.

amitamb··on Show HN: Deploy your websites from Dropbox
Minor issue but "Edit your files locally to updated the site." should be "Edit your files locally to update the site."

One positive point is I got basic idea on what the site is and how to use it in minutes.

amitamb··on Show HN: Domain Name Brain – Instant domain name search / domain name generator
I don't know how you are giving results so fast but as other comment is saying, design doesn't do justice to the usefulness of the app. Good luck.
amitamb··on Show HN: Project Pingback – Find and convert potential customers on Twitter
I think it looks useful. But I could not edit the existing project.
amitamb··on Show HN: W: RoR dev environment in a terminal container
This is really novel concept and I hope it catches on as it presents many advantages.

Although, you have pointed it out in the comments, can't you enable iframing of the response so users are not confused. At lest, I didn't know why I was seeing blank frame.

amitamb··on India Launches Its Second Navigation Satellite
It is Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit I assume(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geostationary_transfer_orbit) (but wiki article's suggested apogee doesn't match) as there 5 more orbit manoeuvres remaining which will put it to final position.

From what I know, this is dues to lower capacity of PSLV which was used for this launch. GSLV being developed has more power but it is not as dependable as PSLV yet.

amitamb··on Stripe Checkout
Probably not exactly similar to what Stripe did but I recently released a tool for creating demos http://www.castbin.com/

Would like to get feedback on what you really liked about Stripe experience and how to improve Castbin.

amitamb··on Show HN: ImpasseBreaker – Double-blind negotiation
I saw your submission on /r/startups and was going to suggest the tool I just released but here it is http://www.castbin.com/casts/ruGwZPcv

Do let me know your feedback.

amitamb··on Web server in one line of bash
Since nobody mentioned ruby version

ruby -run -e httpd . -p 5000

amitamb··on Core flaw of Cookies
I haven't tested it fully but what if https is running on different port i.e. 443 (It is possible.)

I believe marking cookie secure will only save you from MITM attack, not from attacks where ports are shared in a domain. i.e. cookies will be sent over https only but to a compromised port.

amitamb··on Google competitor DuckDuckGo says it's getting shut out
Although you might be right about DuckDuckGo and similar search engines, the article is not claiming that DuckDuckGo is best search engine in the world since it is subjective. It is up to user to make that choice, and given the network effects, that won't happen unless user can easily switch to it. It is about making it even harder for a supposedly better search engine than Google to acquire users.
amitamb··on Google competitor DuckDuckGo says it's getting shut out
Is it PR bullshit? It probably is, but are their claims entirely wrong. If you see my comments, they are not entirely baseless.

Let's not kid ourselves, Google is a good company but they have to defend their position. Not just DuckDuckGo, but even your supposed billion dollar search engine will face same issues mentioned in the article. So this is not about the DuckDuckGo as a company but about monopolistic practices. Let's talk about that.

amitamb··on Google competitor DuckDuckGo says it's getting shut out
But they are using legitimate means to provide search results. And feed(/API) providers are not shutting them out.

Same argument can be made about Google, they do not produce their own data just copy webpages from content providers. If content providers decide to block them from indexing their websites, Google would be irrelevant.

amitamb··on Google competitor DuckDuckGo says it's getting shut out
Search Provider is not an extension it is just a setting in your browser so I am not buying the argument that is is for security purposes.

Also, these three steps are not intuitive i.e. you can't ask user to click a button on your website to initiate the change. While on Firefox, clicking on a button, a prompt gets shown to make your search engine default one. Even in case of Firefox, user has to explicitly click on check-box to make your search engine default.

Try here http://www.verticalset.com/

amitamb··on Google competitor DuckDuckGo says it's getting shut out
To see the difference go to my search engine

http://www.verticalset.com/search

On Firefox, by clicking "Add to Browser" and checking "Start using Right Away", you can make it default.

On Chrome, if you click on same button there is no way to make it default. You have to find the list of search engines in settings and click "Make Default".

On IE, process is similar to Firefox.

It wouldn't be hard to make this similar to Firefox on Chrome, just add "Make it Default" check-box when adding new search engine, but that won't happen anytime soon.

amitamb··on Facebook To Buy Opera? Maybe.
I bet something similar is going to happen sooner than later.

But what is stopping Facebook from forking Chromium(/Webkit) for their own use? Or for that matter even Mozilla might be open for partnership.

amitamb··on Most popular browser missing (Chrome)...
I don't think this page wasn't updated for long time. It has IE logo of IE9+. So it was updated at least after IE9 release and by that time Chrome was major browser.

IE9 was released April Last year.
