amir734jj··on Ask HN: How to negotiate continuing to work remotely?
Because not everyone has a perfect health. I suffer from asthma and have autoimmune desease. I much prefer to work from home.

amir734jj··on Iran can use crypto mined by authorized miners in Iran to pay for imports
That's an interesting angle to the story I didn't think about. I'm an Iranian and Iranian rial has been extremely devalued in the last ten years. Sanctions have been effective at destroying the economy but failed to pause nuclear program. Iranian government didn't spend the $100B relief well and it's trying to get another relief or lift the sanctions altogether. I am not optimistic if cryptocurrency can help their economy in the long term.

What is apparently helping their economy is taking foreign/dual-citizens citizens as hostage to advance their stance in sanction relief talks.

amir734jj··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
I'm a PhD student myself. What he did is not okay! We study computer science to do good not to harm.
amir734jj··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
Please correct me if I'm wrong. So he (PhD student) was introducing bad code as part of research? And publishes a paper to show how he successfully introduced bad code.
amir734jj··on Would you prefer working from home after the pandemic?
Thank you so much for the feedback. I will definitely fix it in the next iteration. I spent only 30 minutes trying to get something to work.
amir734jj··on Would you prefer working from home after the pandemic?
Repo: https://github.com/amir734jj/letsworkfromhome

I created this website because I wanted an option poll showing that majority of people are actually interested in continuing to work from home. Maybe I am wrong. I don't know.

amir734jj··on Google is accelerating reopening of offices and putting limits on remote work
Very well said. I am actually more productive working from home. I think asking everyone to work at the office again is just a decision by extrovert people managers.
amir734jj··on Transiting the Suez Canal in a Private Sailboat (2003)
I'm from Iran but I actually have been living in the US for 12+ years. In my home country bribery is common but what is worse is finding the right person who has connections to bribe. My dad was in construction business (roads, bridges and dams) and he worked hard but he was always cash flow negative even though he was bribing generously. It turned out he could have been bribing the boss directly instead of bribing the employee and employee bribing the boss.

What's funny is my dad is retired now but the boss and the guy he was bribing are both living happily in Toronto, Canada thanks to Canada's investment visa and basically no rules for dirty money.

amir734jj··on Open source Heroku Like Platform on premises
After login the back button doesn't work.

Login -> GCP -> back button -> page crashes

amir734jj··on All my career rejections
Kind of unrelated but I just accepted a software developer position at Microsoft (Redmond). Any advice?

I previously failed twice at Amazon and promised myself to never ever do another excruciating Amazon interview. My interview at Microsoft was super nice surprisingly, questions were difficult but not as tricky as Amazon.

amir734jj··on Crystal 1.0 – What to expect
Very well said. Elegance of ruby I think is very important for ruby developers who need a performant typed language.
amir734jj··on Ask HN: Largest speedup you ever achieved by only changing a few lines of code?
MongoDb driver in C# was failing to convert LINQ expression to mongo query. I noticed it added unit test to make sure it would never silently do in-memory filter. Night and day difference.
amir734jj··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
Thank you for understanding. Thank you!
amir734jj··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
I work at a financial company (200B assets) writing software to analyze bond market. When pandemic started and stock crashed, our software didn't expect such a market crash (obviously, it's called a pandemic ...), so I had to work 80+ hours to get it fixed as everyone else who worked on the application already left and the new people didn't have any clue. Fast forward to the post-mortem phase which also happened to be annual review time, my manager told me I am a toxic person and I made everything worse during the crisis.

To make the matter worse the night when everything was fixed, I was on my way home at 3:30am and I got a speeding ticket for going 60mph over the limit. I fell asleep behind the wheel, thank God I'm still alive.

I left that team immediately, and exactly one year has passed and they haven't been able to find another person to replace me but what bothers me is they promoted that manager because I left and he got all the credit.

In summary, I will never ever work over 40 hours for any company.

amir734jj··on Ask HN: What (side-)project are you working on?
Interesting idea. Thanks for sharing
amir734jj··on Ask HN: What (side-)project are you working on?
I work at a large financial company and every day we have a ansible job to get CSV file that's >1GB and move it to our shared drive. It's very idiot way of moving files but there are tons of companies still using this approach.

Then someone somewhere in India needs to make sure the job ran successfully by attempting to open that CSV file and doing a smoke testing.

I'm looking forward to this!

amir734jj··on Ask HN: What (side-)project are you working on?
That's a great idea!

amir734jj··on The productivity of working from home: Evidence from Japan
There should be a poll in HN to see who likes working from home over working in the office.

For me personally, I love working from home. The company I work for offers free lunch but the quality is terrible but the management usually invites you to a lunch meeting so I have to eat the unhealthy food. Not to mention ping pong after lunch, useless meetings and mandatory greetings (hello, how was your weekend, happy Monday, happy Friday) and etc.

amir734jj··on Zig, parser combinators, and why they're awesome
The only parser combinator experience I have is with FParsec in F# and Haskell parsec. I am not sure if non (purely) functional programming language is suitable for parser combinators. Yes, it works but why?
amir734jj··on Show HN: I made a parser visualizer using manim
I love it. I will definitely use it in the compiler class I will be teaching in Fall. Please improve the README file.
amir734jj··on Show HN: I built a service to share source code without signing up
Looks nice. I like the idea. I wish the UI could be improved more. For example, I see all the languages on left, they could be sorted by the number of codes in a descending order. There is just too much white color. I am color blind, maybe you could have used Bootstrap or Material to get started. I see "No title" everywhere, do we need to see "No title" or maybe not show anything?

I assume the back-end is very straightforward (basic abstraction over S3), so please focus on the front-end.

amir734jj··on Git's list of banned C functions
Maybe instead of just writing a banned message, it should be the name of alternative function to use.
amir734jj··on In the U.S., more immigrants with children are still in their first marriage
I'm not sure if "stable" is the correct word here.

Story time. I'm 27, immigrant living in the U.S. for the past 12+ years. We moved here from Iran when I was in highschool and now I'm a PhD student in computer science. I have been in the school since we moved in here. I have a brother and a sister who are 12 and 15 years older than me. They were not able to move here because they were over 21 years old. I work 2 jobs (senior software engineer and teaching at university), own a house and support my family in Iran. Iranian currency has been devalued by x20 times at least since we moved in so economy is messed up over there. I wouldn't call it a stable life. It's more like a survival.

I'm not alone. I see international students (or couples) who work extremely hard to be able to get a job after graduation. Immigration is rewarding but not an easy path.

I haven't been able to go to back to Iran and visit my friends and family members but I am scared being detained and used for the purpose of "hostage diplomacy" by the Iranian government.

amir734jj··on Bitcoin's vast energy use could burst its bubble
I have the key. I was very tempted to sell some when it hits $20k but I have a full-time job so I just sit back and watch the prices rise :)
amir734jj··on Bitcoin's vast energy use could burst its bubble
I didn't know what Ethereum was at that time. I was 16. Cryptocurrency I think is a bubble. I hope it bursts.
amir734jj··on Bitcoin's vast energy use could burst its bubble
Nope. I'm doing PhD in computer science now and I work full time as a software engineer and teach at university. I'm not retiring anytime soon :)
