amingilani··on How ham radio endures
Heh, I just finished an AuxComm training and two IMS (Ontario’s version of ICS) courses last week. Great timing.
amingilani··on Do not use secrets in environment variables
This may be the first time I’ve looked at an article and realized that it is AI slop.
amingilani··on U.S. court orders LibGen to pay $30M to publishers, issues broad injunction
Even simpler, advertise your onion domain by including a Onion-Location header in the clear-net site’s response.

The Tor Browser automatically detects and offers to redirect you there. No need to memorize the onion domain.

This appears to be an outdated fork of CyberChef loaded with adware. The actual URL is https://gchq.github.io/CyberChef/
amingilani··on Greppability is an underrated code metric
I agree that code searchability is a good thing but I disagree with those examples. They intentionally increase the chance of errors.

Maybe there’s an alternative way to achieve what the author set out but increasing searchability at the cost of increasing brittleness isn’t it for me.

In this example:

const getTableName = (addressType: 'shipping' | 'billing') => { return `${addressType}_addresses` }

The input string and output are coupled. If you add string conditionals as the author did, you introduce the chance of a mismatch between the input and output.

const getTableName = (addressType: 'shipping' | 'billing') => { if (addressType === 'shipping') { return 'shipping_addresses' } if (addressType === 'billing') { return 'billing_addresses' } throw new TypeError('addressType must be billing or shipping') }

Similarly, flattening dictionaries for readability introduces the chance of a random typo making our lives hell. A single typo in the repetitions below will be awful.

{ "auth.login.title": "Login", "auth.login.emailLabel": "Email", "auth.login.passwordLabel": "Password", "auth.register.title": "Login", "auth.register.emailLabel": "Email", "auth.register.passwordLabel": "Password", }

Typos aren’t unlikely. In a codebase I work with, we have a perpetually open ticket about how ARTISTS is mistyped as ATRISTS in a similarly flat enum.

The issue can’t be solved easily because the enum is now copied across several codebases. But the ticket has a counter for the number of developers that independently discovered the bug and it’s in the mid two digits.

amingilani··on What is the longest known sequence that repeats in Pi? (homelab)
Is there a research paper is this?

Seriously, I find the most interesting works self-published in people’s personal blogs and I often wonder if there’s a paper in there and why it didn’t make it into a paper.

Maybe there’s a paper in finding the largest repeating sequence in Pi. There have certainly been more niche papers than that.

Bit off-topic but is Jeff Geerling posting this on HN? I love your videos but didn’t think you were an HN-er.

> poetry took whole day and still couldn't resolve deps.

I hate doing this, but the solution is to reduce the search space for poetry to find a compatible version.

Verbosely install with poetry (-vvv) and note the package it gets stuck on. Find the currently installed version from the lock file and specify it as the minimum in your pyproject.toml file.

The time to find a solution went from 2-4 hours to <90 seconds when I did this a few months ago for a large complex work project.

amingilani··on Call Your Local Wizard
Reminds me of this old con idea. Get a mailing list of 1024 people, send half an email that the market will go up, and half that it will go down.

The next day, half of them will see you got the prediction correct. Of those, send a further half a prediction that it will go up, and the other half that it will go down.

After 7 total rounds you’ll have 16 people that have seen you consistently predict the market for 7 days.

Sell them your next prediction.

amingilani··on Online Cryptography Course (2017)
I wish there was a similar part 2 course. All the courses I’ve seen seem to end at roughly the same point.

I want to learn about elliptic curve cryptography and post quantum crypto systems.

amingilani··on Iran quickens path towards the atomic bomb
There are already nuclear armed “terrorist nations”. Notwithstanding that “terrorist” is subjective and loaded term.
amingilani··on Google fires 28 employees involved in sit-in protest over $1.2B Israel contract
That’s not adulthood. What you’re describing is impossible. You can’t suddenly change your beliefs as you enter or exit a gate. You can choose to suppress your opinions, and you may be okay with that. But that’s the same thing.
amingilani··on Google fires 28 employees involved in sit-in protest over $1.2B Israel contract
> Check your political beliefs at the gate when you walk in

Why? How? It’s unreasonable to suddenly flip a switch and turn off your beliefs when you walk through a gate.

> Every 2 weeks your employer settles their debt to you. This is a transactional relationship.

Agreed but this doesn’t mean…

> If you choose to accept a paycheck, you have to accept the rules and regulations that come with working at that place.

…that you don’t have a say in your company. A company is the sum of the individuals that contribute to it. Some have more sway, especially in leadership, but that doesn’t mean folks can’t band together and influence their work place.

> If the company is doing something illegal, you are welcome to file a whistleblower complaint and take it up with the authorities.

Individual contributors have moral obligation that they are conscious of their contributions. Some groups drill this in: Doctors enforce this through the Hippocratic oath, Canadian engineers have the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer.

However, I believe the obligation applies to everyone. Otherwise, imagine all the atrocities individuals can contribute to by just following orders[0].

amingilani··on Why quantum entanglement doesn't allow faster-than-light communication (2016)
To expand on this, it uses quantum entanglement for FTL communication over a distance of 4 light years. Still a great story, though.
amingilani··on Ask HN: Tips to get started on my own server
In the off chance you don’t keep notes, I’ve found reconstructing what happened on the server from its history to be invaluable.

I once joined a company after they ran out of backend engineers and had to restore a server from a backup. Figuring out how to bring all the services up based on history was a fun ride.

amingilani··on Florida Just Banned Lab-Grown Meat. I Tried to Find Out Why
Why would you claim they’re tumours? Is there evidence showing that it’s unsafe?

Plenty of ideas are abhorrent when they’re proposed but are obvious in hindsight. For example, Ignaz Semmelweis was ridiculed for proposing that surgeons wash their hands before surgery.

amingilani··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
> enabling merchants to give estimated delivery dates to customers during shopping and ordering

It’ll be a new era when FedEx can give accurate delivery estimates. Last time I recall paying for next day delivery and wondering how my package will traverse all of Canada in that time. I then watched the delivery estimate update to “tomorrow” every day for a week until it finally delivered.

amingilani··on Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government's knowledge
Hamas isn’t a country it’s a terrorist organization. It didn’t invade, it terrorized.

Anyone who ignores disproportionate, egregious civilian murders to explain their perspective that Israel is good makes a better case for a misinformed whatabouting propagandist.

That said, I genuinely don’t want this to be an Israel vs. Palestine conversation and more a conversation about why shouldn’t even “evil” theocracies have a right to defended themselves?

amingilani··on Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government's knowledge
I’m sorry I don’t want this to spill into a debate about Israel but saying Israel isn’t genocidal is disingenuous.

In this last conflict so far there’s been 1.4K Israelis killed while 23k Palestinians killed. It’s disproportionally high on the Palestinian side. The majority are civilians. I couldn’t care less why this is so: military bureaucracy? Racism? Dehumanization of the opponents? But the numbers clearly paint Israel as the country “run by terrorists who openly call for genocides and have shown they’re willing to go any mile to achieve their extremist delusions”.

Why is Iran any different?

amingilani··on Dutch man sabotaged Iranian nuclear program without Dutch government's knowledge
I don’t care much for Iran or its neighbours. If you’re framing Israel as the victim here, it probably does have nuclear weapons. I suppose a follow up question is: why is Iran evil for having a secret nuclear weapons program and Israel isn’t for its program?
