amethyst··on Meta plans thousands more layoffs as soon as this week
+15% in one day, when the stock is already down 75% from its peak a year or two earlier, doesn't feel like a "massive jump".
amethyst··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
Except with debit the risk is now back on me to make sure my PIN doesn't get stolen/skimmed/whatever. Transactions are less convenient than a single tap, and (at least in the US) requires paying attention to see if places even support debit.

Ironically, many smaller shops don't support it, even though it would theoretically be cheaper per-transaction, because the up-front costs and hurders are higher than a Square account.

amethyst··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
The convenience of credit cards — and customers' willingness to spend more when they are accepted — is worth more to retailers and customers than the processing fees.

I for one never carry cash, and I will happily pay any extra transaction fees from local businesses for the opportunity to reduce the size of my wallet, the cost/risk of casual theft, and the need to queue at an ATM for cash as part of my daily life.

amethyst··on Google asks some employees to share desks amid office downsizing
Success hides problems.
amethyst··on Meta just gave thousands of employees poor performance reviews
Also keep in mind that this is the first year-long perform cycle, so % of ratings is not directly comparable to previous cycles.
amethyst··on Google and Mozilla are working on iOS browsers that aren't based on WebKit
FWIW, I noticed all of the same issues when using FF on my iPad, but I stuck with it, and it actually got much better, and I haven't noticed a UI/UX bug in months now. It's been rock solid once they got the kinks worked out, and I've loved running FF on all of my devices and having everything synced between them appropriately.
amethyst··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
I would say it's about as popular among the gamers at Meta as it is among gamers outside the company. I play it myself periodically, but I wasn't even aware that Mark was a fan of the game, and I've been here a long time.
amethyst··on One common behavior seen in “mature” software engineers
May I propose terminology that has less negative connotations associated with them? How about "quick" vs "deliberate"?
amethyst··on “They wanted my Instagram handle, and somehow they've now got it.”
Termination on the spot has literally been the standard policy for data violations like this at Meta for at least a decade.
amethyst··on Apple is no longer part of Glassdoor’s 100 Best Places to Work ranking
Neither is Meta, after 12 years of consistently being near the top.
amethyst··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
Firefox with the built-in "Enhanced Tracking Protection" gets you about 70-80% of the blocking that a dedicated adblock system can, depending on the site, and at least saves you from some of the worst behaviors. Between that and network-level ad blocking (Eero+), I really only see first-party ads like FB/IG. When I'm not at home, the chances are pretty low that I'm just casually browsing the web rather than using a dedicated app (where I probably bought or subscribed to avoid ads).

Edit: and if you're willing to use Safari on iOS, there are dozens of Safari plugins on the app store that provide good-enough adblocking.

amethyst··on What's the most portable way to include binary blobs in an executable?
Make a ZIP file containing the blob, and catenate it to the end of the executable binary. The ZIP format specifically puts all of the key metadata at the back of the file, so pretty much any ZIP tool can correctly read/list/extract data from the ZIP portion of the file. Anything that needs to be linked at runtime can just be extracted to a temp dir, and then cleaned up on exit. Bonus points for getting "free" compression on text data blobs.

We do this for Python applications, by combining a ZIP containing the "link tree" of sources/packages/modules, with a shell bootstrap script that automatically sets up the environment, import path, etc, and Python itself has built in support for importing pure-python modules from a ZIP file. All that's needed for native modules is a simple import hook that extracts the native objects into temp space and then loads them appropriately.

Except Poetry's recommendations/decisions around version capping doesn't make sense for libraries. https://iscinumpy.dev/post/bound-version-constraints/
amethyst··on Psst: Fast Spotify client with native GUI, without Electron, built in Rust
At this point, I'd be willing to pay for a Spotify client that works exactly the same, but just ignores the existence of podcasts entirely. I use a dedicated podcast client when I want to listen to podcasts, and they keep shoving them in my face and taking up precious UI real estate everywhere.

But any client without support for Spotify Connect might as well be dead to me. Controlling my wifi speakers from my phone, or playing music on my desktop Mac from my laptop or gaming PC is critical functionality at this point.

> Why is any company having more USB-2 slots than USB-3 these days?

Almost certainly has to do with cost and PCI-E bandwidth. Mobile chips like this only have so much bandwidth, and USB3 requires more dedicated bandwidth than USB2, not to mention more complicated circuitry that drives up price. And when your expected use case is attaching keyboards and mice, which generally are USB2 only anyways, it reduces the cost and bandwidth needed to support that many ports.

Or trailing commas in lists/objects. That is 90% of what burns me every time I write JSON by hand.
amethyst··on Nintendo Switch is not USB-C compliant
It's from May 29, 2017.
amethyst··on Shout – A web IRC client
Or just use an IRC bouncer and connect any IRC client to it at any time, and get a lot more features than what Weechat offers. ;)
