amdolan··on Ask HN: What is your (AI) dev tech stack / workflow?
Thanks for sharing. I recently started using my homemade “competitor” to herde, so it’s nice to compare against prior art.

What do you think could be nicer with a native app? More mouse or visual interactions? Modern design and gui?

amdolan··on Shaders: How to draw high fidelity graphics with just x and y coordinates
Seems like the author is planning to publish a coffee table style book and I could not find a store page for pricing information. Seems a bit early. They have a mailing list though.

Really neat site though. I’ll be following.

amdolan··on Indoor wood burning raises women’s lung cancer risk by 43%
Properly operating a wood burning stove will release very little smoke. This is where the center stone is in the range of approx 300-600F (100-300C). The chimney will produce clear heat and there is no detectable smell when standing outside. Much different result than a fireplace.

It’s referred to as double combustion, or secondary combustion.

amdolan··on Amazon reports its first unprofitable year since 2014
Not that I could find from looking at my past orders on amazon.com and trying to go through support.

I didn't think of the Whole Foods angle, I'll look into that, thanks. At least I'll have someone to talk to about it.

amdolan··on Amazon reports its first unprofitable year since 2014
I was scammed hundreds of dollars buying counterfeit microphones on amazon[0]. Amazon did not provide any way to handle this other than a generic form. The sellers refused to send my money unless I removed my reviews, which I was not going to do at all. I followed the seller's page around, and after a few weeks they renamed themselves to "Sally's Cosmetics"[1] or something, and I posted more reviews on their page. Eventually they disappeared with one of the Amazon counterfeit seller purges. How convenient for Amazon and the seller.

Amazon is like eBay to me. I value my time and cash too much to get involved.

[0] I know, I hadn't been on amazon in a while. I forgot not to buy music equipment (or anything not disposable) from Amazon.

[1] So counterfeit sellers have sold cosmetics on Amazon, and that should be obvious from the state of the store, I guess..

amdolan··on The Problem with Go
With Typescript/coffeescript, there were core language improvements to the language that led to popularity in the JavaScript community. Things like types and arrow functions were welcome additions and gained adoption.

I think that a Go fork would be more like, for example, Go with text internationalisation fixed. It wouldn't be very interesting to a large part of the Go community who is using the language just fine.

Never use sudo with `npm install` as was done in example 6.

I know it's off topic, but it would be good if the author could change that example. In general, one should never use sudo with package managers.

Re your other questions; yeah I gather there is some experimentation involved, even with out of the box commercial products.

If others have suggestions on chips or products to buy for the household, I would greatly appreciate it! The MH-Z19 looks like an option for me. Commercial products seem too unreliable for the price.

amdolan··on How we successfully handled 2.5x traffic in a week
I am loosely involved with one of the language teams. This language team, and others like it, are groups of volunteers and not Kahn Academy employees. I don't have all the details but I know that the teams are responsible for creating the content and uploading the content to youtube. Changing to an alternate host would require more coordination than you might think.

My contribution is that I am helping with automating video uploads to the team youtube channel, which is allowed to have "Kahn Academy {language}" branding.

Shameless plug: If any google or youtube employees can help me raise our API quota please get in touch!!! :)

amdolan··on DoJ to Apple: we can force you to decrypt
The wording that the link discusses is in the pdf[0] section 1.a. on pg 13. Which, for reasons beyond my understanding, argues the point "Apple is not 'far removed' from this matter". The DOJ is discussing a phone that pre-dates iOS 8.

I think the main argument in the linked document is that Apple has the ability to unlock pre iOS 8 phones, and has done it before. Again, that "Apple is not 'so far removed from the underlying controversy that its assistance could not be permissibly compelled.”

The OP seems wrong but IANAL.

> it doesn't have the technical capability to do so;

Is factually incorrect in this case... Right?
