amcoastal··on Once poor, always poor?
Because the rich that arent losing their wealth are getting richer at ridiculous rates? And where is that money coming from?
amcoastal··on Once poor, always poor?
Educations are relative. Sure the inner city US education is good compared to Nigeria, but they arent going to be competing with Nigerians for college admissions and jobs. They will be competing with other Americans who got vastly superior free educations.
amcoastal··on Once poor, always poor?
You think the people gaining the wealth that some rich families are losing are people that need high economic mobility and not just other rich people?
amcoastal··on Ontario bans non-competes and creates right to disconnect from work
I signed one as an intern.
amcoastal··on Ontario bans non-competes and creates right to disconnect from work
I'm in the US, and here very very few jobs have even 1 of those things you listed here. What proportion of the world has those things? Like 7-8 countries total?

Edit: I guess I need to stop commenting at this hour, HN is ridiculous with their down votes when the Europeans are on. God forbid someone tries to ask a question here.

amcoastal··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
A common anecdote from Kant. Im not Kantian but I think (feel) that he is somewhat right that the lie IS wrong. I think the key is that no one can be perfect, and sometimes you have to make a decision between two things that are wrong. In this case lying is much less wrong than not.
amcoastal··on Trade-Offs in Automatic Differentiation: TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jax, and Julia
Thank you so much for this post. I was going to have to self discover a lot of this information for an upcoming project, and now its laid right before me. Merry Christmas!!
amcoastal··on A man who accidentally started an assassin hiring website
I guess I never understood placebo trials in a lot of medical situations. Like what we are discussing here, a "revolutionary cancer drug", why even bother letting people die giving them placebos? Its cancer. Its not like you can placebo effect the cancer away. You don't need a double blind trial to see if the drug stops the cancer, you just give people the drug and observe the cancer! I feel like our medical system is pretty wack. Or maybe I'm entirely wrong and you can placebo cancer away.
amcoastal··on Tell HN: You are not alone this Christmas
Yeah, telling someone to believe in themselves instead of higher dimensional beings is such a terrible thing.
amcoastal··on Tell HN: You are not alone this Christmas
If you're reading this don't take this advice, its really bad. Unless you don't believe in anything, you have to believe in something. If you can't believe in yourself, mythical beings isn't a terrible place to start.
amcoastal··on Great engineering teams focus on milestones instead of projects
I ignore so many of these nonsensical articles on here, but this one really got my goat. Is there someone out there that works on "projects" where the goals of the project are not delivering milestones? I'm probably just lost in the generic management babble.
amcoastal··on Canada's public health agency admits it tracked mobile devices during lockdown
Except the thing that got everyone riled up is common sense activities like wearing masks and getting vaccinated. Where were those people at when bush was taking away their civil liberties? Waving their flags. I can at least get behind the folks like you who have a consistent view, but I definitely don't think that's 95% and I definitely think you are very mistaken that people are suddenly going to start trying to stop the other parts of the surveillance state (aka the actual bad parts, not the wear a mask part).
amcoastal··on Linux Has Grown into a Viable PC Gaming Platform and the Steam Stats Prove It
I like how your first thing when complaining about a non-Mac laptop is a complaint about the keyboard. Oh, you sweet summer child :)
amcoastal··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
That's not what I'm doing but it seems possible you could watch refraction patterns and tell that there are submerged objects, but you'd need to know the water depth without that object there, as there'd be no great way to tell if the object is a submarine or a pile of sand. Also, most of these satellites pass over fairly rarely so wouldn't be super useful for tracking things that move. I'm mostly interested in finding the piles of sand :)
amcoastal··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
Its coastal physics work, you can infer near shore conditions by watching wave propagation.
amcoastal··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
Exactly! I'm working on some stuff now to exploit this very effect, the small time difference in the bands can be used to find velocities of moving objects.
amcoastal··on Apple removes references to CSAM from its child safety webpage
Oh you mean apple didn't bend over for China when it involved not giving up their source code but when it didn't involve them losing their IP they did it easily? Great job Apple, stand up move that I can trust.
amcoastal··on The business of extracting knowledge from academic publications
Try: Paperswithcode.com

If its not there I won't use it! If you dont provide code with your paper it better have a really useful concept in it otherwise not citation. Which beckons to the problem in the article where most important information in basic research papers is: "Hey, this concept works" as opposed to a rigorous test of exactly what makes the concept work and how to use it in other situations.

amcoastal··on A cartel of influential datasets are dominating machine learning research
Advanced pattern matching is called science and has been how humans have made progress by taking data and writing down models for them. Now computers do it. End to end algorithms are 'black box' but machine learning in general is much broader than that and is providing understanding in many fields. Sorry you only see/know the "draw a box around a pedestrian' stuff, but try not to judge entire fields based off of limited exposure.

I visited your Twitter. You really think you can't live without THAT?
amcoastal··on The U.S. productivity slowdown: an economy-wide and industry-level analysis
This has been a huge advantage of the WFH culture lately. I can just keep working while I listen to other people update the manager.
amcoastal··on JetBrains Fleet: The Next-Generation IDE by JetBrains
I'm sure you already know this, but I used to use sublime text and moved to an IDE because of the debugging features. Sublime text and a terminal is great for simple problems, but you'll cost yourself a lot of time doing print statements when you could just use an IDE.
amcoastal··on Einstein award going to Paul Ginsparg for creating arXiv.org
You should do it, but contact your advisor first. I know I'd like to upload my old masters thesis online, but the university retains a copyright on it. Its possible yours does to. I'm sure the information on that would be available on your schools website in the thesis format/guidelines sections.
amcoastal··on Hamilton teen embroiled in FBI probe, fingered in $46M cryptocurrency theft
Of course. But the point is that 5k is FAR too low. The difference between stealing 5k and 50m is far greater than the difference between stealing $200 and $5001. Now read all my comments with this in mind and maybe you'll get what we've been saying.
amcoastal··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
This depends on where you live. In rural areas, and dying towns (most of america geographically), land prices have stayed about the same over the last decade or so. However, materials and labor have increased a lot. So there are certainly situations where the building itself inflates in value more than the land.
amcoastal··on Hamilton teen embroiled in FBI probe, fingered in $46M cryptocurrency theft
??? The law has the same penalty for any crime over 5k, its literally the parent comment I am replying to.
amcoastal··on Hamilton teen embroiled in FBI probe, fingered in $46M cryptocurrency theft
Because a rich person can steal 50m and get penalized the same way someone like us would when stealing a paltry sum. Though my comment also implies the rich can easily drag out their court case and afford an army of representation so they don't have to deal with whatever sentence they are getting. Even though the sentence itself is a sham because stealing 50m dollars being punished the same as stealing 5k is obviously a sham.
amcoastal··on Hamilton teen embroiled in FBI probe, fingered in $46M cryptocurrency theft
I feel like everyone knows why the line is drawn at such a value. So people like us can't afford to commit crimes, but the rich can.
amcoastal··on Parrots will share currency to help their pals purchase food (2020)
Many people who have cats (not all, but many) have ample places for their cat to run around in, and some will even let their cats outdoors. I'm fairly certain the proportion of people who let their cats be "Free Range" is much much larger than the people letting their pet birds fly around.

Right? I was hoping for a good article and instead got machine learned drivel. Is the OP just a bot too?
