ambyra··on Internet's biggest annoyance: Cookie laws should target browsers, not websites
A browser extension or addon that automatically sets the user's preferences and hides the site's popup. Does it exist?
ambyra··on Claude Sonnet 4.5
For unity gamedev code reviews, I much preferred the gpt5 code. Claude gave me a bunch of bad recommendations for code changes, and also an incorrect formula for completion percentage.
ambyra··on Python developers are embracing type hints
With duck typing, you don’t need type hints. You’re just supposed to use the variable however you “feel” it should be used when you’re using it, and it automagically just works!!! Try it! /s
ambyra··on An engineering history of the Manhattan Project
Podcast/narrated version would be cool.
ambyra··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Would be cool if they started using displays with multiple layers, kinda like the looking glass 3D display, to get actual 3d layering of UI. Would look amazing with this new UI design.
ambyra··on Discord Can Make Money
I feel like ads are the least clever/most damaging way to make money for a platform. Maybe better would be to charge large servers a hosting fee. The server owners could figure out how to make money to pay for the fees, through donations to the channel, externally, etc.
ambyra··on Did "Big Oil" Sell Us on a Recycling Scam?
I feel bad for all the sorters that have to sift through trash, who know most of the stuff will just get thrown in the landfill. Some people treat the recycle bin as a second trash can.
ambyra··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
I’m surprised these never took off in Mexico. Water is cheaper than toilet paper, and you don’t have a basket of used toilet paper in the bathroom.
ambyra··on Why do AI company logos look like buttholes?
I think they look more like eyes or portals. I guess you see what's on your mind.
ambyra··on Quality-of-Life in Tetris Games
Lotta people playing on the deck. Hoping to port to switch one day. Local multiplayer would be awesome.
ambyra··on Quality-of-Life in Tetris Games
The rules make it so every new tetris release is just a boring clone. TGM has to fight for innovation, really sad. When I made my four player variant, https://duo.itch.io/reaktor I made sure to follow NONE of the guideline rules, and it ended up being a breath of fresh air for a lot of people. https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/1fdzcsc/how_i_publ...
ambyra··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
It's a meme at this point. People who don't know anything about programming (lex fridman): "It's revolutionary. People with no programming skills can create entire apps." People who program for a living: "It can reproduce variants of code that have been implemented already 1000s of times, and... nothing else".
ambyra··on Government planned it 7 years, beavers built a dam in 2 days and saved $1M
I love beavers!! They don’t just build the dams, but the also change the rivers into special types of ponds that their favorite food grows in (green leafy shoots). So they don’t just build a house but also a farm! So cool!!!
ambyra··on Kenney.nl: Free Game Assets
Are there any good sites like this for game music?
ambyra··on A mistake that killed Japan's software industry? (2023)
https://youtu.be/ky1nGQhHTso?si=XN5Hny_Yd6Svx5M_

Asianometry has a good one on this. They’ve become dependent on US software (and hardware), and programming is considered a low prestige job.

ambyra··on Mitochondria Are Alive
Today I learned that mitochondria are the only organelles that replicate “on their own” inside a cell, while the other organelles just bud off the preexisting ones. I wonder how they are signaled to do so though.

Reminds me of sea slugs that eat plants and then integrate their chloroplasts to produce energy, or my dad who kept swapping the same Honda motor through all our go karts because it was too good to get rid of.

ambyra··on Passport Photos
Would be great to tape the whole picture inside the passport. I’m sure the passport officials could use a good chuckle. … or you’ll go to jail.
ambyra··on The almost-lost art of rosin potatoes
Yeah, like why would anyone want to revive toxic potatoes.
ambyra··on 34x34x34 Rubik's Cube
This is strange, probably not fun to play. I think an exploded view (t shape) on the computer would be cool.
ambyra··on Ryujinx (Nintendo Switch emulator) has been removed from GitHub
Does anybody know where they are mirrors for the source and builds?
ambyra··on Show HN: My attempt at injecting creativity into a stale genre [video]
This is the video series for anyone interested: https://youtu.be/ZbaptQh2AM4?si=tcnu-Vs7X88f9N4a
ambyra··on Why has Japan been hit with rice shortages despite normal crops?
Japan is an island, which can be blockaded, so they’ve always tried to help their farmers. Usually they pay the farmers to grow less, not pay them to grow nothing. Also this policy was phased out in 2018; now they’re just subsidizing farmers and encouraging crop diversity. I think they’re doing a good job. Being a farmer is always hard. In Japan at least they’re making it easier. Encouraging crop diversity and organic farming is nice (especially compared to the us corn/soy situation).
ambyra··on Creativity fundamentally comes from memorization?
It’s not memorizing, it’s actually knowing and understanding the utility of different concepts. When you learn of a problem in a new field, you go through your bucket of tools and modify one to fit the new problem.
ambyra··on Google's shortened links will stop working next year
They could charge for custom video urls.

https://youtu.be/bestVideo1 for $1. I bet a lot of people would pay

ambyra··on We need visual programming. No, not like that
I had no idea. This sounds amazing. Do you know of any companies using this?
ambyra··on We need visual programming. No, not like that
Excel could do this so much better though (and I think excel is the best candidate for visual scripting overhaul). The cell could have two parts; top parts is the function signature (other cells could reference by signature, or by cell number), bottom part is the code. Each cell is a function.

People put huge unreadable basic functions in that tiny box. It's such an obvious pain point, surprised it's never been addressed. Replace vba with c#, have a visual line linking cells to other cell references, bam million dollar product.

ambyra··on We need visual programming. No, not like that
I always thought excel could do this, and everyone already knows excel. Toss out the vba, replace with python, every cell is a function, have a regular view, a relationship view that shows which cells connect to the current selected cell, have a run, stop pause, step/break button. Everyone would use this.
ambyra··on Tetris Font (2020)
Multiplayer Tetris that spins!! https://youtu.be/PGFgcaVmL_I?si=egqUDmOc8D2cUAUM
ambyra··on New Programming Langauge Makes Bash Scripting Easier
Would be nice if there was a Lua or Python/language subset version of this, and it could be run without needing to manually convert to bash first.
ambyra··on In Colorado, an ambitious new highway policy is not building them
You are more likely to die from lung cancer, than from a motorcycle accident, statistically. You are also wasting a lot of your life sitting in traffic. The cost of ownership is much higher, so you could say you’re wasting more hours at work to pay for the large vehicle. I’d say it breakeven at best.
