Transmeta tried and succeeded.

If you think of type signatures as invariants, this is exactly what drostie described. Alas my Google-fu was unable to find a reference to it.
rewritten data: 1 0 2 3 0 3
first row : 0 0 1 1 0 1
group a : 1 0 1
group b : 2 2 3
Group a and group b don't seem to match up with the data. Or I've misunderstood something. Vect a n = vector of a with known length n
(n ** Vect a n) = vector of a with unknown length n
When I think of it this way it's obvious why filter takes a Vect and returns a pair. Though it seems ugly to have to write each vector function to take both "static" and "dynamic" vectors. Conclusion: illuminating a reproduction under different light, or processing a reproduction (an image file) in a computer, will not necessarily give you an accurate representation of what the original would look like. We need more information to know if what they saw in that light room is actually what the original would look like under that light. The same goes for the examples on the page.
