amaks··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
Which is so much better, at least to me, to see targeted ads instead of some generic crap subscription for $7.99/mo.
amaks··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
Interesting. Chromebooks are cheaper and ChromeOS doesn't shove ads to users' faces. Who's scroogled now?
amaks··on Patagonia and The North Face
Well, shoes have very individual fit which especially important in ultras.
amaks··on Operation Rosehub – patching thousands of open-source projects
I think you're wrong. Folks used the most convenient tool at their disposal that is based on the internal tool.
amaks··on Lessons We’ve Learned Using AWS (2010)
Kind of makes sense given the recent outage. At least it looks like it's a good idea to diversify the cloud technologies across several vendors.
amaks··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
That what happens when cloud provider doesn't support live migration for VMs.
amaks··on Uber is designed so that for one employee to get ahead, another must fail
There is (almost) always stack ranking for the purposes of equity and bonus distributions, implicit or explicit. But there is also bottom xx% rule for people that must be given bad reviews and placed on PIP. In Microsoft 2000s it was mandatory rule to axe 10% of bottom performers within a team.
amaks··on Uber is designed so that for one employee to get ahead, another must fail
How many companies did you work at? I know Microsoft used to do that before they presumably got rid of bottom 10% concept.
amaks··on Uber dismissed warnings about its illegal self-driving test for months
"Self driving cars will save millions of lives. We need to speed this up."

By killing some in the process?

amaks··on Alphabet's Waymo Alleges Uber Stole Self-Driving Secrets
Who knows maybe they had somebody else from the Google self driving car project to steal self-driving car secrets earlier. Based on what this Levandowski guy did the industrial espionage may go unnoticed. I'm wondering if Waymo will require Uber to reveal schematics of their self-driving car project as part of the law suite.
amaks··on Alphabet's Waymo Alleges Uber Stole Self-Driving Secrets
Things couldn't be worse for Uber these days. Sexual harassment scandal, Didi Chuxing plans for global expansion, now this lawsuit.
amaks··on Introducing Cloud Spanner, a Global Database Service
Here is a good article: http://www.bluetreble.com/2015/10/time-travel/
amaks··on Introducing Cloud Spanner, a Global Database Service
I bet there will be a lot about CAP theorem in the comments:-)
amaks··on Facebook’s Zuckerberg sues to force land sales
This explains a lot. Zuck, essentially, is: http://blogs-images.forbes.com/kathleenchaykowski/files/2016...
amaks··on Facebook’s Zuckerberg sues to force land sales
Where is his appropriate extensively liked facebook post on that subject?
amaks··on Facebook’s Zuckerberg sues to force land sales
He's learning from the best legally elected politicians these days.
amaks··on Microsoft Office 365 beats out Google’s G Suite in S&P 1500
"Heaven forbid you have someone that wants to cling to Outlook as their mail client, because then you'll have a whole host of other issues."

Here is the root of your problem - your organization was in Exchange ecosystem before switching to G Suite. We use Google Calendar throughout (I worked at Google) and never had problems.

amaks··on Uber ordered to stop self-driving vehicle service in San Francisco
Here the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CdJ4oae8f4
amaks··on AirPods are now available
What's the battery life?
amaks··on Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe Steps Down
It looks like they (Zuckerberg?) realized that high end device model by Oculus is not competitive compared with the mobile VR solutions like Daydream.
amaks··on My Google Internship
It does. All interns that receive good evaluation feedback are offered to transition into full-time employees and this transition may not even require interview loop.
amaks··on How Google Is Challenging AWS
To be fair, Amazon has developed a Silk browser for their Kindle Fire tablets.
amaks··on Breaking the Chain
"The Win32k filter is already used in Edge, however at the moment only Microsoft can use it as the executable signature is checked before allowing the filter to be enabled."

I find this disturbing and anti-competitive. Microsoft is clearly giving Edge an edge here (pun intended).

amaks··on Amazon Worker Jumps Off Company Building After E-Mail to Staff
"Amazon seems to have seriously cutting edge infrastructure"

How do you know? Based on what they sell through AWS? This is not super evident - they might have duct taped bunch of shitty stuff and rely on people on-call 24x7 to keep system running.

amaks··on Apple just told the world it has no idea who the Mac is for
Apple product line is a huge misaligned mess right now. Not surprising considering articles like http://venturebeat.com/2016/10/25/why-tim-cook-is-steve-ball....
amaks··on Microsoft, I Forgive You
Are you saying there is no backstabbing anymore? I left Microsoft in 2012 and it was the worst place on the planet ever (granted, Ballmer was still running the show). But can it change that much especially with all the layoffs they do every year on clock basis?
amaks··on Sergey Brin Resume (1996)
Because it's Russian?
amaks··on Oracle’s Cloudy Future
What a terrible article, and written in such layman language:

"it comes as “bare metal,” a attention tenure for servers with no program installed"

amaks··on Microsoft to shut London Skype office putting 220 jobs at risk
Microsoft is laying people off left and right. Every year lately.
amaks··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
What's the latency of your connection? You can get 4 Mbps throughput (which is not a lot by itself, BTW), but the latency may be too high for a video chat.
