amaccuish··on Bank transfers as a payment method
When using the girocard there's two ways the retailer can take the amount. Either instantly, or using Lastschrift. The latter is cheaper, but the retailer doesn't have the guarantee that your account actually has sufficient balance to pay. If I remember correctly, the latter method requires you to sign the receipt.
amaccuish··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
Not in Berlin. Only the digital version is allowed for entry to those places.

amaccuish··on Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards
It's not just a MasterCard. There are still shops that will accept Maestro and not MasterCard. Further, some girocards, like mine, a V-Pay cards, Visa's equivalent, and not co-branded with Maestro.

amaccuish··on Microsoft Edge GA on Linux
Not shilling, but found WPS Office to be the best Linux office, followed by OnlyOffice. WPS Office even gets the look of MS Office pretty close, which makes the switch much easier.
amaccuish··on IPv6 Progress Top Sites 2021
I did this with bind and static routing but Spotify refused to work :(
amaccuish··on How PHP Opcache Works
Anyone using PeachPie for projects? What do they look like? Do you notice any benefits over pure PHP?
amaccuish··on Why not “Why not WireGuard?” (2020)
OpenConnect is fantastic and even better is their server, OCServ. OCServ just needs a bit more of WireGuard's mobility.
amaccuish··on Use Raspberry Pi as Airplay server to screen mirror on TVs, monitors, projectors
Strange and sad that Apple's approach to remote play is more open at this point than the Google one.

Like open IoT protocols, we need to move to open "AirPlay" protocols. The locked-down nature is so pointless.

amaccuish··on Selecting and Hardening Remote Access VPN Solutions [pdf]
Whilst I think IKEv2 is the best non-wireguard protocol, I've found the seamless roaming/no reconnects of WireGuard to be magical. It is never like that with IKEv2.
amaccuish··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
And that's... bad?
amaccuish··on Firefox 92
> HTTPS RR is great, but not super useful at this point.

I still find it a shame that SRV records never caught on. Active Directory uses them very well

amaccuish··on GnuPG smartcard support is intentionally unable to coexist with other software
Yupp, been through this pain, though gnupg-pkcs11 worked pretty well for me.
amaccuish··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
Massive fan of WeGo but it just told me to take the U2 from Kurfürstenstr. U. Bahn Kurfürstenstr. is U1 and U3...

amaccuish··on Moving my home media library from iTunes to Jellyfin and Infuse
Trying to move away from Plex since it became more "online" focused and less hosted, but can't find a way to export my podcast subscriptions to OPML, only import

Looks like I fell hook line and sinker for Plex :/

amaccuish··on English medical records are about to be given away. As GPs, we’re fighting back
I think transparancy is the answer. In Estonia, if someone's medical record is viewed, it is recorded irrevocably. If there is suspicion that this access was not authorised or out of reach, the state itself will prosecute if you don't want to.
amaccuish··on RFC-8905: The 'payto' URI Scheme for Payments (2020)
Not necessarily. Debit cards in the UK can be trusted to work offline as certain "ceiling" is saved to the card with nearly every transaction, saying ok the owner has 10.000 in the bank, they probably have enough to cover a 4 GBP coffee (yes it's still technically credit but really?)
amaccuish··on PayPal shuts down long-time Tor supporter
We turned off PayPal for certain countries, because the "buyer protection" found too often in an obviously fraudster favour. (reinjection of label into UPS network, forged label for return address etc. PayPal doesn't care as long as there is a tracking number... who cares where it goes to right?).

Anyone who has ever had anything to do with PayPal as a Seller will tell you the same thing, as a buyer, always order with PayPal, and you'll always win.

amaccuish··on Non-native speakers navigate the world of 'good' and 'bad' English
A good outlook but you are one of few.

Sadly I gave up studying French and focused on Russian and German. I have experience in all countries and after being in France I was so disheartened I gave up. My uni grades for French reflect this :(

The joy of a Russian who hears you at least try to speak Russian vs. the French baker who barks at you in response in English

amaccuish··on Germany bans Facebook from handling WhatsApp data over privacy concerns
Fantastic news and really ideally the whole purchase should be reversed (and obviously more ideally never allowed to happen in the first place)

amaccuish··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
>The merchant may register a subscription or other recurring charge arrangement with the customer’s bank or card provider.

An advantage of Direct Debits in the UK is that I see them all in my banking app and can cancel them individually. A company is legally required to gain my consent again before charging again.

Thank you for your insightful comments and sorry for the hate you receiving by not towing the NATO line!
amaccuish··on Elementary OS 6 beta
I always run Elementary shortly after each release and then after a few months find myself coming back to pure Ubuntu after the rest of the ecosystem moves on and updates.
amaccuish··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
> My (albeit limited) understanding is that Visa and Mastercard ensure that the debit/credit transactions are securely and quickly occur,

Now in the EU, if online transactions are over a certain amount or flag up as suspicious, we must use 2FA. So I have to stick my card in my card reader and generate an OTP. Works quite well tbh. My other bank sends me a push notification where I approve the payment.
