alxbrun··on Introducing Aurelia
No pun intended against Aurelia, but this reminds me...

Works for me.
alxbrun··on Why Davis' TempleOS is better than Torvald's Linux
Kudos to Davis, I'm a big fan. Writing TempleOS: amazing. Writing TempleOS with the dog or bird background noise you hear around 5:00 in the video: more than amazing!
alxbrun··on Show HN: Control websites like Pandora, SoundCloud, and Vimeo with your phone
Nice app! Have you considered adding a voice command mode, so that when I'm out of reach of my phone or too lazy to read/touch the phone screen, I can still remote-control websites?
alxbrun··on My Most Interesting Interview Problem
How do you prove than the component-wise normal distributions, once normalized, become uniform on the circle?

UPDATE - OK, got it in some comments that were posted while I was posting this one!

alxbrun··on 3-Sweep: Extracting Editable Objects from a Single Photo [video]
Wow, super impressive. And meanwhile, Silicon Valley is working on the gazillionth social photo sharing app.
alxbrun··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
My "is it new?" test works this way: how would I explain what's new to my father (who is 74 years old and knows not much about tech). A7, M7, iOS 7, better camera and flash: not much to say. Touch ID OK that's new, but that's not much.
alxbrun··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
When I see Apple putting forward as a key feature the number of bits in their processor in a general public announcement... I'm really feeling the "new" product is not really new. In the past Apple was always laughing at the PC ads boasting processor speed and memory capacity.
alxbrun··on The Anorexic Startup
Excellent story. It took me a while to realize it was fiction!

alxbrun··on UX Design of Google Glass Apps
I'm surprised that voice is not mentioned once in this article. As another commenter said, these guidelines could be valid for any device and platform, they have nothing specific to Google Glass.

In my opinion, any experience involving any swipe/touch on Glass is a terrible experience. Period.

alxbrun··on Should I put number combinations like 1111111 onto my lottery ticket?
I'm surprised no answer mentions the Kolmogorov complexity [1]. There's a fascinating link between how a given series seems "probable" to humans and its Kolmogorov complexity.

alxbrun··on San Francisco split by Silicon Valley's wealth
Yes, but on the other hand if all these private companies used their capital to contribute building a decent public transportation system instead of building parallel ones, that would be far better for everybody.

In any other developed country in the world, it would take less than 30 minutes to go from SF to Palo Alto with a modern train.

alxbrun··on Do things, write about it
Good advice, but

"This past month I set a goal to write 20,000 words"
Setting writing goals in terms of number of words looks terribly wrong to me.
alxbrun··on How Forensic Linguistics Identified J.K. Rowling
Yes, I think that after a huge success (such as Harry Potter), artists are under tremendous pressure to release something greater or at least equivalent. The same is true for startups btw.

Anyway, if you want to believe what marketers want you to believe, that's fine with me, I won't downvote you for that.

alxbrun··on How Forensic Linguistics Identified J.K. Rowling
I don't buy this 'outed' story one second.

This is either marketing or fear of public reception of her non-Potter book (imagine the pressure she must have). Either way, this is crap.

alxbrun··on Why I'm Returning Google Glass
True, but in the case of Glass the speaker is always the same (it's the owner) so you can learn and adapt the acoustic model over time. I'm wondering btw if Google doesn't do that already for Android's built-in speech recognition, which accuracy is amazing.

The other problem is that apps cannot (at least for now) change the language model, so Glass will always be in either "search" or "dictation" mode.

alxbrun··on Why I'm Returning Google Glass
I think the biggest problem is this swiping thing. Imagine Apple had released the first iPhone with a mouse plugged to it. It's a pure betrayal of the original Glass vision, where all user => machine communication goes through voice.
alxbrun··on FundersClub rewarding investors for referrals
+1 And you aint going to disrupt anything by investing "$5 million in 25 companies".
alxbrun··on Stay in the Building
It's true that the excessive need for external validation kills many startups.

A pattern I've seen over and over (and I fell myself in that trap once) is:

A startup wants to disrupt an industry by making a self-served, SMB targeted product (think Zendesk). But they want external validation. Actually you can understand that: their bank account, their family, their ego want external validation. So they start reaching out to large enterprises. A few of these enterprises become customers and start to dictate the product roadmap. Soon enough, the startup has forgotten its self-served, SMB, disrupting vision and joined the ranks of the old-school vendors it wanted to disrupt.

alxbrun··on Do call yourself a programmer, and other career advice
If only my wife's body was immutable.
alxbrun··on Do call yourself a programmer, and other career advice
Up to this day I'm still wondering if the girls thought that "Java" was a very special service I was requesting.
alxbrun··on Do call yourself a programmer, and other career advice
I was having a beer in this small Brazilian town, mid-afternoon. Two girls come to my table. We try to chat ; they can't speak any foreign language and my Portuguese is awful.

- Me: What is your job ?

- The girls: Programma

- Me (for the next 30 minutes): Oh great, me too ! Which languages ? <here comes the enumeration of the 100 programming languages I know, each one pronounced in 10 different ways, Brazilian accent, etc.>

Even "Java" didn't seem to mean anything to them. Strange. I assumed they had special programming languages in Brazil.

10 years later, in Palo Alto. I read some article about Brazil society. One word catches my attention.

Programma = Prostitute. Oh.

So yes, don't call yourself a programmer. Especially in Brazil when you don't know the language.

alxbrun··on SpoonRocket (YC S13) Delivers Healthy Gourmet Meals To Users For Just $6 Each
I like their idea and wish them good luck. But I'm tired to read all these /\w+ fundamentally change the way we think about \w+/

"SpoonRocket was built to fundamentally change the way we think about food.". I'm sorry, but adjusting parameters like delivery time or price or number of choices in the menu does not "fundamentally change the way" I think about food.

That being said, that's a great business idea and I'm looking forward to trying them!

alxbrun··on San Francisco, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down
Cannot agree more -- I actually moved to Palo Alto :)
alxbrun··on San Francisco, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down
SF is great for two categories of people:

- The wealthy

- The homeless (yes, social services and tolerance is much better here than in any other big city in the US)

People caught in the middle who own a house will survive 10 years before quitting. If they don't own a house they have already left.

I'm doing more than $100K and I had to leave the day I started a family (try to find a rent below $6K for something suitable for a couple + 2 children). I think it's sad that the city will progressively become a strange place where the very rich and the bums stare at each other. If you want to have a preview, spend one hour on Market and 7th.
