alwayslikethis··on Reverse Engineering iOS 18 Inactivity Reboot
Great writeup, but I wonder why so much emphasis is put on not 'connected to network' part. It seems like a timed inactivity reboot is a simpler idea than any type of inter-device communication schemes. It's not new either; Grapheneos had this for a while now and the default is 18 hours (and you can set it to 10 minutes) which would be a lot more effective as a countermeasure against data exfiltration tools.

Any large expenditure is going to cause inflation since it competes with the rest of market for materials, labor, or any other limited resource. It doesn't mean we shouldn't do it but we can't just ignore the consequences.

It's also a coordination problem. You won't help your children (the timeline is not that long) by personally giving up your "modern [conveniences]". You need a substantial portion of the population to do that to have any hope of moving the needle. So the choice is between getting the benefits or not, your children will suffer anyway.

Any nuclear power plants being built decreases the marginal cost of building another. If private companies are willing to front the cost of building the first one in recent times, it may help.

> A 5 passenger vehicle can be 1200kg or 3000kg but both offer almost the same utility.

Let's be honest here, a lot of these 5 passenger vehicles carry only the driver 90% of the times. For that use specifically it can be replaced with a 30 kg e-bike or scooter.

AC is pretty efficient and the temperature differential it needs to overcome is smaller than winter heating in most places. For these places specifically it seems to obviously be the production of oil for the first two and coal for the third. The availability of fossil fuels tends to make them cheaper and consequently a lot more is used.

alwayslikethis··on US fertility rate dropped to lowest in a century as births dipped in 2023
I assume GP is implying some type of cultural messaging around kids being undesirable. I don't think this is true, and even if it is, the primary reason is the decline in living conditions (inflation-adjusted wages) for the average person in western countries for the past 50 years. Especially housing. Without stable and cheap housing it is hard to raise kids well.
alwayslikethis··on Matrix Client Tutorial
In order to support bridges to so many different proprietary platforms Matrix needs to have a superset of their features, so the feature creep is probably intentional. It does make it harder for clients to keep up though.
alwayslikethis··on Matrix Client Tutorial
The lack of good clients is really holding Matrix back. Element is rather bloated, and most of the other clients are missing significant amounts of features.
alwayslikethis··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
A lot of teaching is wasted on those who already knew and those who are ill-prepared to learn. Although I am skeptical of many of the current proponents of AI in education there is clearly a lot of opportunity for improved efficiency here.
alwayslikethis··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
I don't like the idea of requiring it in school. It is tantamount to the government (of which school is a manifestation) forcing you (a minor) to enter into a rather unfavorable contract (data collection? arbitration? prove you are a human?) with "Open"AI. This type of thing is already too normalized.

> a certain degree of "productive struggle" is essential

Honestly, I'm not sure this would account for most of the difficulty in learning. In my experience most of the difficulty involved in learning something involved a few missing pieces of insight. It often took longer to understand the few missing pieces than the rest of the topic. If they are accurate enough, LLMs are great for getting yourself unstuck and keep yourself moving. Although it has always been a part of the learning experience, I'm not sure frantically looking through hundreds of explanations for a missing detail is a better use of one's time than to dig deeper in the time you save.

If there's something more unethical than AI plagiarism, that's going to be using AI to condemn people for it. I'm afraid that would further devalue actually writing your own stuff, as supposed to iterating with ChatGPT to produce the least AI-sounding writing out of fear of false accusations.
alwayslikethis··on Manjaro is experimenting with **opt-out telemetry
I would think Arch is close enough to Manjaro that it wouldn't be too tricky to migrate. You would probably get most of the way there by simply copying home and etc and then reinstalling the all of the installed packages.
alwayslikethis··on Manjaro is experimenting with **opt-out telemetry
That's the kind of thing you do with spy- or ad-ware. What does Manjaro offer over plain Arch that is "super comfortable"?
alwayslikethis··on Manjaro is experimenting with **opt-out telemetry
One of the best things about using free software is you don't get any nags, terms and conditions you need to click through.
alwayslikethis··on Manjaro is experimenting with **opt-out telemetry
Arch has an installer now. Arbitrarily delaying packages doesn't really make things any more stable. If anything it causes stability problems if you use the AUR that assumes you are on latest arch.

> The renaissance of the open, human internet is in full swing only among the small number of people who have an opinion about the open, human internet.

Has this ever been not true?

Has the median person ever participated in this?

Just like how the original golden age involved only a small portion of the population, so will this "web renaissance", in the best case.

You can already buy one of those, the X13s. But the performance isn't like Apple's.
alwayslikethis··on How is the SSD installed – M4 Mac Mini (2024)
I'm surprised it doesn't overheat already. My 4TB on an M.2 2280 form factor runs at 60+ C. Compressing that down would make it much harder to dissipate the heat.
alwayslikethis··on How is the SSD installed – M4 Mac Mini (2024)
It is vendor lock-in. The cost of leaving is not in the SSD but the software ecosystem you'd be giving up if you want the same performance with other hardware. The $1000 SSD is the rent or surplus they are charging by the virtue of their lock-in, minus the prevailing price of the a comparable NVMe SSD.
