alufers··on The journey to controlling external monitors on M1 Macs
There is https://www.ddcutil.com/ It has a command line utility and a qt GUI. Unfortunately the GUI is a bit convoluted, because it exposes every option that you can change on the monitor. I once almost bricked my LG monitor, because I accidentally locked the hardware buttons on my monitor, via an undocumented manufacturer specific option.

For gnome there is https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/2645/brightness-contr... This addon adds brightness sliders in the power menu for your external monitors.

alufers··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
Do you know what sites do that? I have my own domain and I haven't seen anybody do that. The obvious solution is to configure your mail server to only accept usernames before the '@' that adhere to some rule which only you know. Like checking if it is a palindrome or something obscure like this.
alufers··on The architecture of Uber’s API gateway
This GUI must have a pretty advanced versioning and rollback support, otherwise I can see one user borking the whole API with a bad change and nowwhere to check what happened.
alufers··on Extreme HTTP Performance Tuning
That is one hell of a comprehensive article. I wonder how much impact would such extreme optimizations on a real-world application, which for example does DB queries.

This experiment feels similar to people who buy old cars and remove everything from the inside except the engine, which they tune up so that the car runs faster :).

alufers··on The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences
I like how everybody here uses this website for some profound mathematical purposes, but I once won a cordless drill due to the OEIS in high school. At some hackathon Bosh had a booth with a contest where you had to solve puzzles which consiststed mainly of finishing integer sequences. I remembered this encyclopedia and I found all of them on the oeis.
alufers··on Suspended from Google Play for listing supported subtitle formats
Somebody recently sent me a link to a video on YouTube about the infamous prickasso [1]. I was very surprised to see YouTube hosting a video of him, well, painting on camera.

alufers··on Constructing an 8-bit relay computer from scratch
I think it is due to arcing. With AC an arc will extinguish itself itself when the voltage goes through 0, but for DC no such thing occurs and an long arc can damage the relay contacts.
alufers··on Firefox 83 introduces HTTPS-Only Mode
To add to this: What interests me is how will they handle accessing the management interface of routers and various network equipment once HTTP gets deprecated.
alufers··on Firefox 83 introduces HTTPS-Only Mode
It will probably be a hardcoded exception, just like for enabling microphone/webcam access and other features today.
alufers··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
I have added a Sonnoff mini with Tasmota to my light switch in my room. Whenever I cannot see my USB ports on my computer at night I just press a macro button on my keyboard, and without taking off my headphones I can see everything. Kinda dumb, but it makes me happy every-time I don't have to move my ass.

Nevertheless sometimes (once every 6 months maybe?) the Tasmota box looses connection with my WiFi network and I have to power cycle it via the breaker box to reset it.

alufers··on I'm going to experiment by being Blind and Alone for 24 Hours
For somebody who is nearly 2m tall peeing without sitting down means uniformly coating my legs and the immediate surroundings with pee droplets of high velocity.
alufers··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
AFAIK this does not work with apps which have purposefully disabled screenshots, the Android UI is visible on scrcpy but the contents of the app appear black.

What is interesting is that Android appears to be rendering every frame two times, because when I scroll down the notification drawer, which contains some semi-transparent elements under which you can see the restricted contents on the screen of the phone, but on scrcpy the transparent elements have black under them.

The same thing happened when I wanted to use my Android TV as a poor man's HDMI grabber.

alufers··on Show HN: Turn your website console into a chat that connects website visitors
This reminds me of the time when I wrote a web crawler which saved all unique HTTP headers along with their values. Turns out that those `X-We-Are-Hiring` headers are not so uncommon. I also found a misspelled content security header on some poor Brazilian Bank's website.
alufers··on Garbage collection via pneumatic tubes
In the former soviet block, moist of the built blocks had garbage chutes, but today almost all off them are out of service and welded shut. They would smell terribly all year long, rats would climb up the shaft to your apartment. And the poor guy who had to empty the collection room at the bottom never knew when somebody would throw something disgusting down at his head. So yeah, I don't know if putting garbage in tubes, pneumatic or nor is a good idea.
alufers··on Show HN: Headless Recorder
Maybe in the future we could have accessible controls which are accessible for non-graphical interfaces such as screen readers and automated systems.
alufers··on Wikipedia is getting a new look
As an owner of an ultra-wide monitor I am all for adding margins on the left and right side. I feel like my eyeballs are about to fall out everytime I read something longer on maximized Wikipedia.
alufers··on Traefik, Now With Native Go Plugins
There is the "plugin" package which seems really cool and fits the simplistic style of Go (tbh I haven't tried this module myself, only glanced at the documentation), but it does not work on Windows, which I think is the reason it is not used. The ticket about adding Windows support to the plugin package is one of the highest rated ones on Go's GitHub, yet it is still open.
alufers··on Cyberpunk 2077 Logos
It seems like you are not the only one. CDPROJEKT has been the top 1 biggest company by trading volume on the Polish sotck exchange over the last few months. It even surpassed the second biggest copper producer (KGHM) in the world.
alufers··on Show HN: Olaf – Acoustic Fingerprinting on the ESP32 and in the Browser
I see a very zealous and illegal, albeit useful application: I could hide an ESP32 with a relay inside of a circuit breaker and install it in my neighbor's breaker box, cutting their power every time they start blasting obnoxious disco music at 3 AM.
alufers··on Stopping phishing campaigns with Bash
Oh how cool, I thought I was the only one trying to mess with scammy sites when I find them. Although I can see that I could improve my methods, since I usually write a short user script which spams the forms with data from faker.js and let the open tab sit pinned in my browser for a week or so.
alufers··on Russia lifts ban on Telegram
Does this mean that now Telegram will give the Russian government whatever they want, if they think it is "extremist"?
alufers··on New.css – A classless CSS framework to write modern websites using only HTML
This looks more like an attempt at criticizing the bloat people add to their websites basically just to change the font from Times New Roman. I can't really see this competing with bootstrap, since it lacks all the custom components.
alufers··on Street View camera rigs do much more than just take photos
Thanks for the valuable insight, 50 amps look like the sort of current you would see while a car's starter motor is running. Out of curiosity, do you shut down the equipment automatically when the engine is killed? I imagine drawing so much current may interfere with the starter motor.
alufers··on A first look at Unreal Engine 5
This is really cool, looks like HDR environments in real life. Makes me wonder if this could be used in conjunction with cameras and some clever image processing algorithms as a camouflage method.
alufers··on Street View camera rigs do much more than just take photos
I wonder if all the tech in those cars requires modifications to the vehicle itself, like a larger alternator to satisfy the power requirements or reinforced pillars to support the weight of the hardware. It'd be cool to hear from somebody who knows how they equip those cars.
alufers··on GCC 10.1 Released
> Someday we might have multilingual frameworks and not restrict programming to the privileged few that could learn a second language.

I seriously doubt it, English is really easy to learn (sure the pronunciation is weird, but who needs it when you are writing code), and by learning English you can understand all the code with identifiers in English, written not only by native-speakers. Additionally, I wouldn't want a person who couldn't be bothered to learn a natural language to be a programmer in my company (if it was based in a non-English speaking country, of course).

> "reading mixed language code is hard, despite me being fluent on both! everyone should speak what is more convenient to me!" > leaving billions of people that do not know english out.

How is writing bilingual code including more people? You are limiting the total amount of people who speak English to the subset of people who know both the language.

alufers··on GCC 10.1 Released
As a non-English programmer who has seen a lot of code not written using English please, god, NO. The mixture of English and other languages identifiers in the external libraries makes me cry.
alufers··on GitHub Codespaces
You can set up your actions to build an executable for each commit on the master branch, it will be available as an artifact in the actions tab. This is useful if you want to test your built code.

Generally speaking, you shouldn't modify existing releases, since somebody may have downloaded them and he will have no way of knowing you have improved them.

alufers··on Ask HN: Would you choose Dalvik VM to Arduino?
Do native Java APIs, when paired with special hardware work on such a solution? For example I think It would be cool to attach an Ethernet NIC to such a board and just use Java's HTTP libraries.

Another aspect is, the size of the binaries, as many of those prototyping devices are not limited by their processing speeds, but the flash size.

What about Kotlin support (I presume it works, since Kotlin is compatible with java).

Cheers.

alufers··on Redis 6.0 GA
I mostly work on solutions used in-house by the client. The most used app that I had created was used by maybe 50 people at the same time, and it was mostly manipulating spreadsheet-like data, so querying the database directly was fast enough.

I know broadly what Redis can be used for, I was just asking for some practical tips.
