altero··on Life as a Nonviolent Psychopath
This is just bullshit. A few decades ago psychiatrists were deducing personal traits from shape of skull. This imaginary is kind of similar.

There are 100 000 000 000 neurons in brain, we can not even count number of connections. We are very very far from understanding it.

altero··on How To Become Uber Productive While Working For Yourself
Getting uber productive while working at cofe on free wifi:

To be uber productive you need good task list. Instead of writing 'get shit done' split it into smaller tasks:

- find toilet

- put toilet seat down

- produce shit (at least 1 feet long)

- sit down

- cleanup and flush

Also do not forget to produce piss in good balance. There is a rule called 80/20.

altero··on Lenovo to buy Google's Motorola handset division
Lenovo is already making decent phones and in china are quite big. Perhaps they want on US market.
altero··on Revolution in Kiev
So EU is abolishing agricultural subsidies?

EU would set import tax on stuff imported from Russia.

altero··on Revolution in Kiev
Perhaps they need more skills at throwing molotov coctails?
altero··on Revolution in Kiev
For start Ukraine treaty does not handle subsidies. So France and other countries would be able to 'dump' their subsidized agricaltural product on Ukranien market. Ukraine farmers do not get subsidy, they have higher prices and would eventually bankrupt.

Industry is concetrated on east and exports/imports mainly to Russia. EU would make it very hard to trade with Russia. Factories could not sell product and could not import materials.

Joining EU is long process which takes years of negotiation. Poland is good example. But just signing whatever EU throws your direction is very bad deal.

altero··on Revolution in Kiev
> Joining the common European market

But this joining would be one direction, Ukraine would not be allowed to export into EU thanks to various regulations. Also Ukraine already has common market with Russia, and this would have to close.

This deal is actually really bad for Ukraine.

altero··on Revolution in Kiev
I wonder if somebody actually read EU treaty (reason for all this protests). Signing it would pretty much kill industry and criple agriculture at Ukraine.
altero··on Argentina restricts online shopping as foreign reserves drop
In less developed parts you do.

Most people here have gun, since it takes about 1 hour for police to show up. Local hospital sucks (once they forget scalpel inside patient) so most people pay bribes to get better hospital. And there is school here, but I would not dare to send my kids there.

I think "people just give up" well describes situation here.

Some European countries have tax around 60% and VAT over 20%...
altero··on Announcing the Female Founders Conference (March 1)
You wrote that issue is stigmatization. But by creating separate group we make stigmatization worse.

This field already has lowest possible entry bar. IT sucks and not all people want to work here. Get over it.

altero··on AMC movie theater calls FBI to arrest a Google Glass user
They do. But in Russia or China with tripod and proper camera. This was just bullshit.

altero··on The Neuroscience Guide to Negotiations With Iran
I think they have lot of dolars from oil, so perhaps money are not that important. Perhaps they are just show strenght. Perhaps they do it just to piss off US.

Still, enriching uranium for civil use is they right.

altero··on The Neuroscience Guide to Negotiations With Iran
I think benefits of electricity are obvious.
altero··on The Neuroscience Guide to Negotiations With Iran
Could we please drop this stuff from HN?

Iran is enriching uraniun because they have right to do so. They ratified Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which allows civil use of uraniun.

I wish futurist would just drop speech recognition as holly grail. Speech has lot of flaws, is horribly unprecise and non private. I think neural interface has better future.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
As far as I know NKVD did not massacred Jews. A few dozens arrests and closed elite universities does not really compare to tragedies of other nations (hint: I am Polish).

Anti-zionism is not antisemitism.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
Stalin killed millions, mostly Russians. For example huge part of army officers were executed just before German invasion.

He hated everyone, Jews were not exception.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
> Are you denying that antisemitism continued under the Soviet Union

Yes I do. There were so many Jews in soviet party, there is even "theory" that soviet revolution was Jewish conspiracy. [1]. Stalin initially supported Israel state with weapons.

Antisemitism started in 60ties, after Israel becomed US oriented and several people from soviet union emigrated there. After that several soviet jews had relatives on west and were perceived as 'politically unreliable' and potential spies. There were mainly political reasons for discrimination, it really turned into antisemitism in 90ties after soviet union.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
> Unless you claim that the officials of MGU went great lengths to keep young Edward Frenkel out of the university for some other reason than his Jewish surname

That is exactly what I am saying. Examiners could got orders to fail him, if for example his uncle lived on west. Officially there was no discrimination, so it was mostly done by bulling people at exams.

White (perhaps even heterosexual male) has statistically lower chances to study for free. It fits definition of discrimination as a glove.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
Please read something about Russian history. Most early socialists leaders were Jews. Some prominent anti-socialism authors are bordering antisemitism (Solzhenitsyn).

Places at universities were not 'for everyone'. One needed political connections, family history and bribes. If your father would emigrate to west, you may forget about higher education.

Most restricted were elite humanitarian studies (philosophy, film-making...). Technical studies were bit more free, but still had lot of restrictions.

altero··on The Fifth problem: Math and Anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
It is bit more complex.

Socialism discriminated 'intellectuals' in favor of 'proletariat'. For example son of doctor had lower chances compared to son of factory worker. Jews were perceived as intellectuals.

Similar discrimination is today in US. Jews are discriminated for being white.

altero··on Can-Do vs. Can’t-Do Culture
A few years ago the iPad mania just started. I worked for harware company on admin software. It was written in Java, 15 years old (1998) and never had major rewrite.

All managers were like 'be like apple' and 'we must release iPad app' and 'PC is over'. Programmers on other side wanted to rewrite some critical parts, introduce automated tests and fix some very old bugs.

I was speaker for programmers, soon I became 'tablet hater' (kind of funny since I had Android tablet). Latter we even bough some iPads for developers to learn, those were locked in managers office :-). I left company shortly after that.

So for me 'Can-Do vs. Can’t-Do Culture' is just sort of bullshit to mask real problems. Sure Jobs made iThinks, but he pulled massive resources towards the problem. Apple actually bought factories for touch screens before iPhone was made.

altero··on The Mac Pro Review
Configuration is kind of joke. 16GB RAM and zero free slots on high end desktop?

My PC had the same price three years ago, but it has 5GHz CPU, 32GB RAM, 1TB on SSDs and 5 TB on spin HDDs.
