alt227··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
...and investors. Remember that many investment funds around the world will also be benefitting from this, meaning pensions, investment savings accounts etc
alt227··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Things are toppled a lot higher now than several centuries ago. Population is orders of magnitude higher, and we all get our food from far away places in the world. Those things make a very fragile global ecosystem which is very different to the very localised ones centuries ago.

Back then 2-3 consecutive years of bad harvests meant a major upheaval for a few affected areas. Now that those areas supply food to the whole world the problem has grown in scale and fragility.

alt227··on Firebase SDK is CRASHING ALLLL iOS Apps, since today morning
I agree its not practical, but including any 3rd party libraries in your project puts it at real risk of upstream bugs. There needs to be acceptance of this rather than blame culture.
alt227··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Yeah its the same with prisoners. Obviously with the right targeted support they do very well at rehabilitation. Unfortunately in our society it always comes down to an issue of cost, and the cost of individual targeted support is only increasing. I'm sure with infinite money we could educate everybody to an amazing standard, and reform every prisoner. It is a shame that our wellbeing as a society has become an act of taxation budgeting.
alt227··on What even is an OS now?
Fair point, I reduced it a bit far to bootloader only there, the os also needs to manage and allocate resources dynamically to the other software too.
alt227··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Yes fine, blame and criticise every single person that worked on those glasses. But other teams like accounts, cafeteria, hell event the damn cleaners have nothing to do with it.
alt227··on What even is an OS now?
How is that any different to adding a calculator or word processing app in with your os?

The OS bootstraps the hardware and allows the software to run. If your software is contained in the same blob then great, but it still needs the bootstrapping code first.

The bootstrapping/hardware management portion on its own would be considered an OS but the LLM code would not, I think thats the main distinction here.

Tarring innocent people with the same brush as their overlords is a very dangerous direction to go down.

No, I just dont care about being filmed in public.

If I enter a public space I consider that anybody could watch me at any time, therefore I am always careful in public and always consider that walking out of my property is consenting to anybody else seeing me. Cameras are already everywhere.

Personally I dont see a difference between someone watching me on the street or recording me and watching it back. Its just no different to me.

alt227··on What even is an OS now?
As far as I am concerned an OS is really simple to define. Its the thing that manages hardware resources on a device to allow other software to run using said resources.

LLMs are not OSes and never will be, they will always need some software to first bootstrap the hardware before the software which processes the weighting can begin.

Its like we need Richard Stallman to come and argue the difference between GNU and Linux again!

alt227··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
US has Flock, ICE, PRISM and many other privacy horrors. I would much rather live in the UK than in the land of orange.

The world is not black and white, it is possible to have completely different opinions to the narrow dichotomy you have presented.
alt227··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
But meta employs many thousands of people. Is it fair to say they all work on the meta glasses and/or all think they are a good idea? Just because you work for a company doesnt mean you share its morals.

Poor Tracy in accounts probably doesnt give 2 hoots about meta glasses, shes just an accountant and maybe she doesnt even know they exist. But now shes getting harassed by idiots with cameras as she goes into the office because of something another department on the other side of the country did.

If you were doing it to Zuck himself or following round the head of the smart glasses department then it might be different, but harassing general employees of meta is no better than any other company. These are normal people no matter where they work.

Ring doorbell cameras are chest high and millions of homes have them. I would bet every time you walk down the street you are captured by loads of them, but because you dont know you dont care.

I mean, you are being filmed everywhere you go anyway by flock cameras, police/government cctv, even cctv on business and peoples house/ring doorbells etc. Concent to being filmed in a public place is not really asked anywhere, so I dont see it as a big difference personally.

I cant believe this is a thing. I just turned on dead comments and there are loads of them, most I dont consider offensive or bad in any way. I had no idea HN was so severely censored, my opinion of it has gone down (even though I assume this comment will now be killed).

Anyone can just go on Temu and easily buy stalking gadgets like gps trackers and tiny spy cameras etc for very little money. Any legislation against this type of thing would need to be very wide reaching to be effective, as there are much cheaper and easier to obtain devices which secretly film than meta glasses.

alt227··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Heres a favourite of mine. Apple & Google were/still are syphoning off all mobile device push messages to US government. They flat out denied it for years until it got leaked from another source, as soon as it was out in the open they admitted and said they were doing it all along but weren't allowed to tell anybody due to government NDAs.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/governments...

These aren't conspiracy theories, these types of secret agreements happen all the time.

EDIT: it seems the original poster I was replying to has deleted their post, and so this may not make as much sense in the thread now.

Care to give some examples of what you consider to be coordinated groups, functional groups, and abstract groups?

I am assuming that your point is that prejudice is ok to some type of group but not other, but I am inferring that from your answer. Feel free to correct me.

I have applied for, and got, 3 jobs in the last 8 years. So yeah I think I am allowed an opinion on it without people telling me Im wrong.

Its a shame the meaning of language is subjective, or we could all happily live under this banner forevermore.

Why would you throw an accusation out like this without providing any evidence of your own?

Who are these people making up evidence about %vulnerable groups% and what are they saying?
