alright2565··on DoorDash and Waymo launch autonomous delivery service in Phoenix

alright2565··on Rcyl – a recycled plastic urban bike
It has a Gates belt drive, which has been getting pretty popular with electric bikes due to the very low maintenance requirements.
alright2565··on Rcyl – a recycled plastic urban bike
Pretty much. I thought that maybe this is an electric bike, in which case the weight might be OK, but no, this is unusable anywhere with hills.

As a quick reminder, metals can be recycled indefinitely. Plastic cannot, you always have to include some virgin material.

alright2565··on 3M May Escape Toxic Chemical, PFAS Manufacturing Legacy
That article's only citation is a review paper, and it doesn't answer my question or substantiate your claim. It only covers how much PFAS is found in rainwater, and not how it got there.

The sources cited includes https://doi.org/10.1016/j.watres.2020.116685, which is paywalled, but the snippet of the conclusion that is shown indicates that a possible major cause is industrial emissions:

> As local sources were determined to be significant, the results imply that local action can have an impact on PFAS contamination in precipitation. A three-way ANOVA model determined that functional group, chain length, and location were significant predictors of PFAS concentrations

If you can get the full text I'd be very interested in reading about it.

alright2565··on 3M May Escape Toxic Chemical, PFAS Manufacturing Legacy
What is the physical process that leads to PFAS ending up in the rain?
alright2565··on Zoxide: A Better CD Command
There's no need to type "cd", just the folder name and hit up until you get to the right command.
alright2565··on The best YouTube downloaders, and how Google silenced the press
The official download option doesn't download it to your filesystem as a file. It just lets you watch the video offline in the official app/website. Just tested it now.
alright2565··on Trumpcard (Official US Government Website)
Looks like the eagle is hundreds of PNG files on a javascript timer, and it's dropping frames.
alright2565··on Wind turbine blade transportation challenges
The big question is why not build the turbines offshore?

The article briefly mentions this, and that the off-shore blades are over twice the length of the blades this airplane is designed for, but it doesn't look at all at the economics of either option.

alright2565··on Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio (2024)
This page was very slow to load for me, probably partly because it's being hugged by HN. But it would help a lot if images had the `loading="lazy"` attribute, and if they were compressed to about ~100KiB each instead.
alright2565··on AI web crawlers are destroying websites in their never-ending content hunger
I'm not sure what Netlify is doing, but the heaviest assets on your website are your javascript sources. Have you considered hosting those on GitHub pages, which has a generous free tier?

The images are from steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net, which I assume is already being hosted by a third-party (Steam)

alright2565··on Sometimes CPU cores are odd
In part because this particular proof of work is absolutely trivial at scale, with commercial hardware able to do 390TH/s, while your typical phone would only be able to do a million and still have acceptable latency.
alright2565··on RFC 9839 and Bad Unicode
> "Unicode Scalars", aka "well-formed UTF-16", aka "the Python string type"

Can you elaborate more on this? I understood the Python string to be UTF-32, with optimizations where possible to reduce memory use.

alright2565··on How does the US use water?
The average American discards 80lb/year of clothing. That absolutely isn't serving a human need, that's plain overconsumption.
alright2565··on How much do electric car batteries degrade?
But the reason you drive such a long distance to work is to be able to live in a suburb, right?

Looking at the actual stats, you're a bit of an outlier: https://aaafoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/202309_... (p. 12). The average commute trip is 22 miles, and keep in mind you also could use a level 1 charger at home.

alright2565··on How much do electric car batteries degrade?
1.6kW is the limit; but no, they aren't. But you don't need 7.2kW all the time! There's no way that every single car would need to charge at every moment, and I know this from walking through parking garages and seeing some cars not move for days at a time.

A EVSE could easily serve multiple spots, and fairly (or unfairly, for profit!) distribute power between cars from a limited supply

alright2565··on How much do electric car batteries degrade?
> talking thousands of chargers, for most parking structures

My home has an average of 10 chargers per room; I don't think it's really been a big driver of its cost.

alright2565··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
The PCB designer could simply type "Type-C电路图" into Baidu and follow the instructions in the top result. But they couldn't be bothered.
alright2565··on Android Earthquake Alerts: A global system for early warning
Google has this. I remember recently feeling a minor earthquake, and googling it. The message that came up said that others had felt it too in my area, and then it showed up on official databases a few hours later.
alright2565··on Investors bought 27% of US homes in Q1, as traditional buyers struggle to afford
> Of those, mom-and-pop investors, or those who own between 1 and 5 homes, account for 85% of all investor-owned residential properties, while those with between 6 and 10 properties account for another 5%.
alright2565··on ICANN fumes as AFRINIC offers no explanation for annulled election
How does his YouTube channel have:

1) 6.3M subscribers

2) <5k views on about half their videos

3) 10M+ views on a random selection of their dullest videos?

alright2565··on China is increasingly a home to major brands
On that page, I clicked on the "Build and Price" button. All that page contains is their SUV models.

I then checked the 5 dealers closest to me. At these 5 dealers, there are only a total of 3 base model cars in inventory, all last years' model: 18k, 18k, and 20.6k

The explanation is obviously the chicken tax and fat profit margins on their larger SUVs.

alright2565··on Nvidia is full of shit
It would help, but my intuition is that the thin steel of the contact would not move the heat fast enough to make a significant difference. Only way to really know is to test it.
alright2565··on Nvidia won, we all lost
Might help a little bit, by heatsinking the contacts better, but the problem is the contact resistance, not the wire resistance. The connector itself dangerously heats up.

Or at least I think so? Was that a different 12VHPWR scandal?

alright2565··on AV1@Scale: Film Grain Synthesis, The Awakening
I think you've missed the point here: the noise in the originals acts as dithering, and increases the resolution of the original video. This is similar to the noise introduced intentionally in astronomy[1] and in signal processing[2].

Smoothing the noise out doesn't make use of that additional resolution, unless the smoothing happens over the time axis as well.

Perfectly replicating the noise doesn't help in this situation.

alright2565··on Data center projects blocked or delayed amid local opposition
I agree, and I was considering mentioning a LVT in my comment.

I think it would have been pointless though, because LVT doesn't stand a chance: Conservatives would hear "tax" and immediately say "no", and progressives would be unhappy that their elderly mom wouldn't be able to live alone in their 6-bedroom childhood home.

alright2565··on Data center projects blocked or delayed amid local opposition
> significant amount of resources

Most importantly, location!

Location is not fungible, and at least in my local area, data center developers seem to want to place their datacenters in up-and-coming areas, where they would block the development of higher-quality structures.

There's no reason the datacenters can't be built in the middle of nowhere, far from people, especially as they don't provide any jobs to the community.

alright2565··on $30 Homebrew Automated Blinds Opener (2024)
For building mains devices, you should start by learning about creepage, clearance, double-insulation, the role of earth connections, the requirements for isolation between low voltage and high voltage, etc. Basically a good bit of electrical engineering.

This is different from what you need to know to do house wiring. That's done by following electrical code, which is basically a distillation of the engineering above into a set of relatively easy-to-follow rules.

If this is your model, would you mind making the first pic a picture of it installed? It's hard for me to visualize how it is supposed to work.
