alpineman··on What's Earth's dominant species by mass?
And the birds suffer the whole time in giant sheds with no daylight, and then the majority of that entire 2/3rds biomass is slaughtered in a very distressing way every 6 weeks or so.

People then eat chicken and feed the remaining 1/3rd seeds on a bird feeder in their garden.

Two is enough for foundation models, these guys and Aleph Alpha. The gap is closing.

>> Unofficially ML4, very officially: le Chonk

Honestly just nice to see a leader in this space not take themselves so seriously.

Thank you for your important work!
alpineman··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Huh? Not eating meat is not the same thing as Fruitarianism.

Plenty of delicious (if prepared properly) and healthier plant-protein alternatives to meat. See: Tofu, Seitan, Lentils, Chickpeas, Tempeh, Edamame, TVP, Lupins, Hemp seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Peanuts, Nutritional yeast, Oats, Quinoa

alpineman··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Yes, the vast majority to feed animals. Simply replacing meat consumption with plant-based protein sources by a small amount (say 10%) would offset the water usage of even a heavy AI user.

I used to do that too but found that often, unless it's a really tough/unclear bug, lower reasoning levels are much better and don't overcomplicate the code. It also writes clearer explanations and plans on lower thinking levels.
alpineman··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
Yes, a single hamburger takes 620 gallons(!) of water to produce. Eat plants. Plenty of great plant protein alternatives available, plus they are healthier and don't depend on killing living beings.

So it's overdramatised on the gas, but underdramatised on the war?
alpineman··on Dots: Always-on agents
Same thing by a different name no?
alpineman··on Dots: Always-on agents
I mean OpenClaw being acquired by 'Open'AI says it all doesn't it?
alpineman··on Dots: Always-on agents
I’m sure this is appealing for many people, but for myself using AI agents all day anyway, it honestly sounds exhausting.
alpineman··on OpenAI: Tomorrow we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscription
"have all been exploring crappier models" - lol
alpineman··on OpenAI: Tomorrow we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscription
That's just not enough dollar volume to pay for all the inference, data center buildout, training, salary costs to compete with Meta etc etc. They also need to pay for the inference of the 98% of users who don't pay anything but use the models, that's essentially a marketing cost.
alpineman··on OpenAI: Tomorrow we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscription
Title should be - 'OpenAI cuts Pro $200 usage by 50%'
alpineman··on When did Google get so weird?
Soon we are going to have to poison our own search history to prevent profiling.

On another note, maybe this is a strange place to share this, but I'm really sad that Rodrigo isn't coming over tonight. We had plans to watch a marathon 14-hour Train Simulator 2022 journey at our house in Perth, Australia. I feel this could be the end of our 13 year relationship.

alpineman··on Claude Opus 5.5
So we skipped 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4: we really are plateauing
alpineman··on What Sun got wrong
Is this how the whole LLM thing will go down once providers raise prices?
alpineman··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
So by your logic we should not treat humans with impaired cognitive abilities as equals?
alpineman··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Cows also grieve their young yet we keep them permanently (forcibly) impregnated and take their young away to be slaughtered every few months just so we can drink their breast milk in our coffee. I can’t take seriously people who get emotional over stories like this then eat dairy products.
alpineman··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
I assume you haven’t lived in a village before? These fairs have absolutely no money, and often not even much time as it’s fully volunteer led

alpineman··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
According to the FT, Von der Leyen didn't really get the OK from member states before coming up with this. Let's see what happens in practice, the trade agreement from 2017 hasn't even been ratified yet.
