alphast0rm··on Amazon Restaurants
> Uber eats is the best of these I've found, but it's a pain meeting at the curb.

This is an option, you should be able to select whether you want to meet your courier at the curb for faster food or wait for them to find parking and come to your door.

alphast0rm··on Uber starts self-driving car pickups in Pittsburgh
It's interesting to consider Google's data from another perspective:

> “Uber logs as many miles in 24 minutes as Google’s autonomous cars have logged in their existence,” they wrote. “While none of these miles are fully autonomous today, we just point out the scale of experience that can accelerate the development of the AI, mapping and learning for autonomous cars.” [1]

How does this compare to react-vis (https://uber.github.io/react-vis/)?
alphast0rm··on Uber’s subprime leases put drivers on road, but leave some shackled
> ...and no sick days, paid holidays, vacation

That's not really true - one of the big advantages of driving for Uber is you set your own hours, so you can take time off whenever you would like.

FYI: You can copy/paste the title into Google to get past the paywall. There's a also a bookmark script someone on HN made to do this automatically on-click but I don't use it personally.

Companies with 500+ shareholders have to file reports including audited financial information with the SEC [1], which would be a problem.

alphast0rm··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
That's two OS X upgrades in a row (Yosemite, and now El Capitan) that the upgrade has moved the contents of my home directory /home/users/alphastorm/ into /home-preserved/. Luckily moving/copying everything back seems to fix almost everything.

Anyone else had this happen to them or know why it happens?

alphast0rm··on What are you working on?
I'm working on an MVP for online shell history (bash/zsh) as a service. Source a script, add a command to your $PROMPT_HISTORY, and all your shell history will be available online.

It will also provide some graphs along with insights/advice, for example, suggesting possible aliases to save time. Looking to get it out in the next week or two, would love to hear if you guys would be interested in something like this!

alphast0rm··on “I have [bash] history back to ~2003”
I started working on something myself--should have something out in a day or two :)
alphast0rm··on Early vs. Beginning Coders
A good analogy I've heard to explain this is how you'd request a glass of water from the kitchen from a friend versus a computer. You can simply tell your friend "get me a glass of water" and they'll understand what you're asking. With a computer though, you must be completely explicit with your instructions, for example: walk to the kitchen, open the top left cabinet, take out a glass, put it underneath the faucet, turn the faucet on until the glass is 80% full... etc.
alphast0rm··on Show HN: Sssaving – Are you gaining or losing money each month?
I agree and did the same thing. I think it would also help if there was a sample "update e-mail" so users can get a feel for what value the site adds (e.g. vs Mint's e-mails). Otherwise, I'm hesitant to link my accounts without knowing what I'll get out of it.

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2014)
Relcy | https://www.relcy.com/ | San Francisco, CA

We're embarking on a fresh take on search for the mobile world.

For the next 6 months, Relcy is looking to hire the remainder of the core Engineering team and officially launch the product. We recently raised $9MM from Khosla Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

The team consists of PhDs, distinguished Stanford Alumni as well as former Google and Facebook employees.

Search & advertising are the biggest source of revenue for internet companies around the world and we are targeting both revenue streams, so we are very bullish on our future prospects.

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: suggestions for a college Startup Club?
There's a really similar group to this at my school called Washington University Tech Entrepreneurs, and they also have a venture capital lecture series called wute.vc. In the past they've brought in people from Union Square, TechStars, etc. You can check out their site here, might help you come up with more ideas:

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: How to prepare for an interview at a startup
If you have enough time I would highly recommend reading "Cracking the Coding Interview" by Gayle Laakmann McDowell [1]. She does a very good job covering all aspects of the interview process and the problems and solutions will most definitely help you improve your algorithm and data structure skills.

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: You've been programming. What surprised you?
Try and learn as much as you can, even if it doesn't fall into a realm of CS that you are interested in. Little tidbits of knowledge will accumulate over time and in the end you'll be a more well-versed engineer than someone who didn't pay quite as much attention. This is coming from personal experience, best of luck! :)

You are correct sir, GA is the 2-letter abbreviation for the state of Georgia.
alphast0rm··on What are some great examples of well-designed personal websites?
You obviously have a better design sense and much more experience than someone who has been at Apple for the long haul designing UI/UX and has won the Apple Design Award! I hear that's not credible at all.
alphast0rm··on What are some great examples of well-designed personal websites?
This is clearly by design, try clicking on something (and then scrolling!) to navigate the site like intended.
alphast0rm··on Ask HN: Thoughts on 3D printed guns?
There was a really interesting article on Forbes about this a couple of months ago. Ultimately, only a receiver for an AR-15 was printed, but it is scary thinking about the possibilities:

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: How do YC/Techstars partners get compensated?
For YC, this is from their application page:

We usually invest $11,000 + $3000n, where n is the number of participating founders, up to 3 (i.e. 2 founders get $17,000, 3 or more get $20,000), in return for between 2% and 10% of the company. The average is 7%. [1]

alphast0rm··on Google censoring results, erases 'No Filter' option
Google is not really censoring results, they are "now filtering – or selectively showing – hardcore porn with a bit heavier hand". Here's the full story on TechCrunch:

alphast0rm··on Hacker News search
The tricky thing when doing this is knowing what rate to stop at without getting permanently banned. I built an Android Market crawler two summers ago, and luckily Google only temp bans (from my experience), so that might be an easier project without any risk.
alphast0rm··on Advice on making most from meetups (Bay area)
Yes, these things are most definitely helpful! You can start by preparing a short elevator pitch about your product if you are trying to interest/recruit other hackers. Also, don't be afraid to reach out for help when you need it or be outgoing in general--most people are very friendly and more than willing to go out of their way to help/teach if the requests are sincere and it's a great way to meet new friends or mentors. For meetups check out this month's meetup thread if you haven't already seen it:

Good luck :)

alphast0rm··on Ask HN: When your friends ask "can you build me a website?"
I'm surprised no one has mentioned YC-backed Weebly, which solves this exact problem:
