alphabetting··on Jia Tan "JiaT75": Added error text to warning when untaring with bsdtar (2021)
Would be cool if there was a big warning icon with "ACCOUNT LOCKED: STATE ACTOR" like for cheaters on chess websites

alphabetting··on Google questions Microsoft ability to secure cloud in promotional whitepaper [pdf]
Thanks for reminder. Guessing it got removed from the main feed because of this.
alphabetting··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
Do you think the remote operators are driving the vehicles? They can only give the car instructions (pull over, go back to depot etc). In no sense are they driving.
alphabetting··on [dead]
not that it matters but I can't find that on the front page or 2nd, 3rd, etc. you'd think it would be there with that many upvotes in an hour. maybe this one got prioritized bc it's not paywalled?

search has always been hard and say if you do get market share on google, a portion of the massive SEO industry will eventually turn their sights on you and make your life hell.

alphabetting··on Google Podcasts service shuts down in the US next week
I already had Youtube Music and their podcast integration seems better than Google Podcasts but this probably is a pain if you don't have youtube music or can't easily export followed podcasts.

alphabetting··on The Claude 3 Model Family: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku [pdf]
Impressive benchmarks here. The 90% eval for one of the math categories on 0-shot vs 74.5% GPT-4 8-shot is nice.

alphabetting··on California Approves Waymo Expansion to Los Angeles and SF Peninsula [pdf]
If apple spent 10B on their car, I wouldn't be surprised if Waymo spent 50 or 100 over 15 years and they invented the modern robotaxi. I think they've earned the ability to charge whatever they like. I'd also happily pay more than Uber rides whenever it comes to my area. Riding a couple in Arizona was amazing.
alphabetting··on Microsoft tried to sell Bing to Apple in 2018, according to Google court filings
>They have an absolutely gigantic financial incentive to keep using Google

Do you think the times Apple was considering Bing that Bing wouldn't be paying the similar fees?

alphabetting··on Microsoft tried to sell Bing to Apple in 2018, according to Google court filings
>underinvested

"The Justice Department said in its own newly unsealed filing that Microsoft has spent almost $100 billion on Bing over 20 years."

alphabetting··on I Spent a Week with Gemini Pro 1.5–It's Fantastic
I think Google has some big advantages in cost with TPUs and their crazy datacenter infra (stuff like optical circuit switches) but I'd guess long context is still going to be expensive initially.
alphabetting··on I Spent a Week with Gemini Pro 1.5–It's Fantastic
Not publicly known. I think speculation is use of mamba technique but I haven't been following closely
alphabetting··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
Massive whoa if true from technical report

"Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5 Pro's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens"

alphabetting··on OpenAI Develops Web Search Product in Challenge to Google
> The search service would be partly powered by Bing

No details on how this would be different than current Bing. A rebrand of Bing under the OpenAI banner would be smart though. Bing reputation before OpenAI integration seemed to much to overcome as search market share hasn't changed in the year after Satya's "make google dance" comments.

alphabetting··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
That's a bummer. I just made this one up which GPT-4 failed and Gemini got right but definitely need to do more testing to see what's being taken from online and what is actual reasoning.

Here's a logic question I just made up that GPT-4 failed and Gemini Advanced got right.

Yeah. I don't have much personal use for image generation though.

Gemini Ultra seems better on logic than GPT4. Still messing around testing but here's a prompt Ultra nailed but GPT4 completely botched:

Tabitha likes cookies but not cake. She likes mutton but not lamb, and she likes okra but not squash. Following the same rule, will she like cherries or pears
