alphabetatheta··on Open-source tool translates and dubs videos into other languages using AI
Some of my friends have been using: https://app.vivalabs.ai/ as a more managed/paid service recently
alphabetatheta··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
To quote the majority opinion: "Testimony or private records of the President or his advisers probing such conduct may not be admitted as evidence at trial." Sounds almost impossible & a pretty definitive statement.
alphabetatheta··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
This is a terrible take. The Supreme Court case severely limits even the use of evidence to prosecute a President. The majority ruling says that as long as something is done in "official" capacity the intentions don't matter.

EDIT: This ruling probably retroactively clears Nixon from Watergate. It would make it illegal to use the tapes as evidence against him.

alphabetatheta··on Show HN: Free Video Generation with DreamMachine AI – Try It Now

alphabetatheta··on FTC says Adobe used hidden fee to trap people into paying for subscription plans
Pretty surprising that the FTC decided to go for something like this.
alphabetatheta··on Llama-3-V model was plagiarized from MiniCPM
Surprised some folks did something so blatant and obviously stolen!
alphabetatheta··on Posthog – open-source analytics and UX research tool
Posthog has been a fantastically useful tool to understand how our product is being used! Don't get some of the hate - any OSS company will probably embed some telemetry occassionally.
alphabetatheta··on Show HN: Open-source Auth0 alternative Ory Kratos v0.13 released – nearing v1.0
Why are people still using Ory Kratos? It's still incredibly confusing documentation. Large fan of projects like: https://supertokens.com/ that focus on making authentication workflow implementation really easy.
alphabetatheta··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
The main question here is how soon will the model architecture improvements come. I fathom it won't be that long till OpenAI or Google come up with something better. The tricky piece here is that these companies will now keep their models more proprietary to make profits. Can a competitor company figure out an on par or better model architecture in time?
alphabetatheta··on Shifting the Balance of Cybersecurity Risk: Security-by-Design and -Default [pdf]
I've commonly seen companies create secure by default programs around there deploying there Infrastructure (terraform/cloudformation templating). Maybe some companies do this with packages and vulnerability management. While its commendable to try this, until an organization is pretty large very little effort will be put into making secure by default design.
alphabetatheta··on Building LLM Applications for Production
Are there any great examples of cost efficient LLM application deployment at scale?
alphabetatheta··on System design and the cost of architectural complexity (2013)
The hardest part here is the tradeoff between architectural complexity as you build systems and speed of shipping product. Earlier stage companies will ship ship ship and ignore good architecture practice. At some point, it will come back to bite you if your company lives to see another day.
alphabetatheta··on LangChain Announces 10M Seed Round

alphabetatheta··on After Doling Out Loans, China Is Now Bailing Out Countries
China picks which loans to give based on geopolitical importance. This is a fantastic way to wield soft power of the US, India, and other Eurasian countries. Moreover, it also reduces reliance on the dollar.
alphabetatheta··on The meat industry blocked the IPCC’s attempt to recommend a plant-based diet
I'm actually surprised how much dairy products contribute to global warming. It's only veganism that really cuts down on carbon emissions.
alphabetatheta··on ChatGPT outperforms crowd-workers for text-annotation tasks
I wonder how much we can extend this to image or video labelling tasks? this could really jeopardize the business moats of lot of data labelling startups and services.
alphabetatheta··on Clearview AI used nearly 1M times by US police, it tells the BBC
Such a tool could be used if there were regulations around its usage in police stations and proper auditing of its use. Seems like we're far from it. I hope it doesn't fall into the hands of foreign adversaries.
alphabetatheta··on Why take a compiler course? (2010)
Some of the best programmers have come across had their origins in OS and compilers. This is where the real programming and fundamentals are built.
alphabetatheta··on Adobe Firefly: AI Art Generator
What lot of folks are missing here is just how easy it is to add "AI" to products for large companies. The APIs are prevalent and easy to integrate with. Right now we're in the hype cycle, but soon people will be finding and reporting on all sorts of limitations and security issues.
alphabetatheta··on A Unified API for Permissions and Activity Info from SaaS Apps
Hey HN! I've been building a unified API for permissions, user activity, and configuration information for 100s of SaaS applications.

This can help answer questions like:

- Does user X have read permissions to Google Drive file Y?

- What are the recent failed login attempts to Salesforce.com?

Extracting this information from each SaaS application individually requires manual downloading of access logs, screen scraping, and other cumbersome work.

Some potential use cases include:

- An enterprise search company determining if an employee is allowed to view a particular Google Drive document

- A SaaS security company monitoring login activity across SaaS apps

- A SaaS spend management company determining if there are multiple unused licenses to Zoom

I'd love to hear any feedback you have or feel free to reach out at founders@ironleap.io.
