I would first check the iPad + keyboard is actually lighter than the Macbook Air. As far as I know the keyboard weighs quite a bit, though coincidentally Apple's website doesn't specify the weight.

From what I've seen people have mostly been asking for Mac OS features on the iPad, not phone apps on the Mac.

The increased compatibility is great and kind of obvious given the switch to ARM, but if it went both ways then the M4 chip in iPads would be a lot less bored.

My screen is 4k and it looks as sharp as it gets with the 1080p scaling. As far as I understand it only gets blurry when using the 1440p setting as that changes the render resolution to 5k which doesn't scale cleanly to a 4k screen.

Which means the UI & text is a bit larger than usual but it's the right size for me.

AWS can profit more from it than smaller organizations or individuals, making it even more untouchable by potential competition.

A market with little competition costs you too in the long term.

The Files app cannot access images in the Photos app or music in the Music app. The only way to add music to the Music app is to copy the files onto the iPhone from a computer. You can however install VLC player and copy the files into the VLC folder. I guess VLC player is more trustworthy than Apple Music considering it's less isolated. Or Apple really wants you to pay the Music subscription, who knows. Want to give another app access to these files? You'll have to duplicate them, using up more storage space.

I get that it's supposedly about security, but this is not the only secure way. It is however the most convenient secure way for Apple, as now the only simple method of backing up and syncing files through all those isolated containers is iCloud.

> Reachability enables you to reach top left corner

I thought it goes without saying that poorly made accessibility features don't mean the device is very usable. The existence of that feature by itself is already evidence against that.

alpaca128··on iPhone 17e
That's true, some foldables like that exist. The problem for me is that I don't want to pay for the folding part, not interested in that.

I have large hands but the 13 Mini is roughly the maximum I can use one-handed without doing the weird finger balancing act to shift the phone around. I get why most people like large phones - media consumption - but not everyone is into that.

I don't even mind large phones if they're done right. My favorite phone of all time is the BB Passport which you have to use two-handed, but it was actually designed around that and amazing to use.

Huh, I think I figured it out. It now works again after removing the extension "Return YouTube Dislikes" which I had just kept around because why not.

Turns out if both this and uBlock are active, YouTube will refuse to work. But only uBlock works just fine.

alpaca128··on Smartphone market forecast to decline this year due to memory shortage
I also use Firefox with uBlock Origin. It worked flawlessly until some time this January. It happened with the switch to a new version of the video player which changed the design and behaviour. I'd be curious if you're still on the old version or something else is different.

Roughly in that timeframe YT also successfully blocked downloads with yt-dlp for a bit. Seems like they're trying harder now because of AI scrapers.

alpaca128··on This time is different
So type errors are not hallucinations in your book, but "a reference to something which doesn't exist at all" is?

In the context of AI most people I know tend to mean wrong output, not just hallucinations in the literal sense of the word or things you cannot catch in an automated way.

Ad blockers don't work anymore, at least not with the version YT serves me. If it thinks that I have an ad blocker active (false positives happen too), it will only show a black rectangle and not even load the comments.

"users seem to choose velocity over quality pretty consistently"

When do they have a real choice, without vendor lock-in or other pressure?

Windows 11 is 4 years old but until a few months ago barely managed to overtake Windows 10. Despite upgrades that were only "by choice" in the most user hostile sense imaginable (those dark patterns were so misleading I know multiple people who didn't notice that they "agreed" to it, and as it pop ups repeatedly it only takes a single wrong click to mess up). It doesn't look like people are very excited about the "velocity".

In the gaming industry AAA titles being thrown on the market in an unfinished state tends to also not go over well with the users, but there they have more power to make a choice as the market is huge and games aren't necessary tools, and such games rarely recover after a failed launch.

alpaca128··on Bcachefs creator insists his custom LLM is female and 'fully conscious'
Asking an AI to name itself is already strange to me. It makes me think the user treats the AI as something that deserves enough rights or respect that assigning it a name might feel wrong, or at least that the AI has sufficient intelligence to make such a decision.
alpaca128··on Bcachefs creator insists his custom LLM is female and 'fully conscious'
> Does your consciousness circuit get triggered?

In the short term, but over time the patterns get more obvious and the illusion breaks down. Generative AI is incredible at first impressions.

Just days ago I had a similar experience with GNU gperf. No, it has nothing to do with the profiler on Linux and perf doesn't stand for performance. It's for generating perfect hashmaps.

> Every video that has sponsors has a disclaimer on it

No. That's what should be the case, but there are entire channels which don't do that or only half-ass it, and I've seen reviewers who just quickly say "thanks to <company> for their support" in the last 10 seconds of the video because they know no one pays attention anymore at that point. Quite a few review channels also do not correctly communicate that the links in the description are affiliate links etc.

alpaca128··on The EU moves to kill infinite scrolling
>> And all existing videos with sponsorship need yo be removed?

> Yes, or re-uploaded without the sponsor segment

I hope not. For one that would hit retroactively, but also it would cause a huge loss of valuable content from platforms like YouTube as countless videos with sponsor segments are actually interesting and simply too much to reupload, if the uploader is even active still.

alpaca128··on iPhone Air
What needs to be better about screens outdoor? iPhones have had nicely readable screens in bright sunlight for a long time now, including compatibility with sunglasses. Though it would be nice to see this in all other phones too.

Other than that I agree. Especially camera bumps are annoying to me, I would prefer a phone thick enough to make the bump disappear, that would then automatically solve the battery life issue as well.

alpaca128··on iPhone Air
I don't have the impression people care about the weight of phones. Premium phones have metal and glass cases, and in the non-premium market the thing that matters is price.

What matters to me is how comfortable it is to hold and use with one hand. Large and thin phones tend to be bad in that aspect.

alpaca128··on Untangling the myths and mysteries of Dvorak and QWERTY (2023)
> For usability alone those small sizes don't make much sense

They do. Having every key reachable without hand movement is quite comfortable. Switching to and using arrow keys is as fast as typing a capital letter with shift.

But it's not everyone's cup of tea, just like Dvorak seems to be great for some people here and pointless for others.

alpaca128··on Untangling the myths and mysteries of Dvorak and QWERTY (2023)
The part about hand movement confuses me. On qwerty you can reach all letters without moving the hands. On both qwerty and dvorak you still need to move or stretch the hands to reach backspace, arrow keys, escape etc. So how does dvorak reduce hand movement?

> the things to write come in bursts

In short bursts I can reach higher speeds than what I can maintain over a period of time. It's fast enough for me.

> transcribing what someone is saying, needs high speed

That's a very specific use-case and I wouldn't type fast enough for that no matter what layout. At that point I'd probably learn stenography instead.
