almost_usual··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
The consistent best thing you can do for yourself and family is sleep well and exercise to increase your aerobic efficiency.
almost_usual··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
The Fed purchased Treasury securities during COVID QE. Those securities had low yields and cash reserves were created during those purchases.

Those cash reserves are held by banks which the Fed funds rate pays interest on (what was hiked).

Meanwhile the fixed rate debt from QE remains the same.

almost_usual··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
Long term bond yields are not directly tied to the Fed funds rate.

The problem is the debt purchased by the Fed during QE had extremely low yields (COVID era) the reserves held by banks created by the Fed during QE now cost more to service by the Fed.

Or proof of work to at least deter the increase in transfer volume. Neither are environmentally friendly.
almost_usual··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
The existing models and higher layer protocols of the web will likely break down over the coming years.

I’m not exactly sure what will replace it yet but communication infrastructure built for humans isn’t going to scale with the volume of communication created by artificial intelligence.

There might be some solutions requiring proof of work to introduce friction but that comes with a real environmental cost.

I’ve personally spent the least amount of time over the past three decades on the Internet this recent year. There are some niche corners I frequent but I find the overall experience more draining than rewarding lately.

SSRIs not Benzodiazepines. Withdrawals from the later can be life-threatening if you abruptly stop after prolonged use.

Sleep less and sit more. What a species we’ve become.
almost_usual··on Chinese robot runs 100M sprint quicker than Usain Bolt's world record
My bar is the Kilian Jornet test. Once a humanoid robot can do everything he’s done within the same time constraints it’s officially over.

Until then human is the best at navigating and moving across various terrain.

More ego than practical.
almost_usual··on British runner Josh Kerr breaks world record for mile which stood for 27 years
There’s a psychological factor. Many people believed it wasn’t humanly possible to do a sub 4 minute mile before Bannister accomplished it.

Once that was done the flood gates opened and many others broke it in the following months. This is the “central governor” theory in endurance sports.

almost_usual··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
Magnesium Glycinate worked well for me, take it an hour before bed or so. L-Threonate is too expensive, citrate gave me diarrhea.

Much more deep sleep with Glycinate, some folks don’t like it because they feel too groggy after waking.

almost_usual··on What happened to nerds?
Elites who put in a lot of work are world class. You can’t outwork genetics.
almost_usual··on What happened to nerds?
Some people are naturally talented at things. It’s no different than an average athlete who works extremely hard and an elite athlete who puts in half the work but still outperforms the average.

almost_usual··on Creatine raise brain energy levels and slow Alzheimer's cognitive decline by 30%
I’m an ultra runner, I’ll do 50-60 mpw weeks during peak weeks with strength training.

I take 10g creatine, it did wonders for me. More energy and mental sharpness.

Strength training is essential for runners to avoid injury at high mileage. Sleep, strength, and nutrition. It can’t be ignored or you will get injured.

Some folks mention cutting it out to lose weight but at higher mileage I find it hard to keep on weight anyway.

almost_usual··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
I take 10g a day, have for a couple years now. Started mostly because of training but it does wonders in sleep deprived states.

5g would probably be fine without a lot of training ( I train about 10hrs a week). Seems like I need 10g to both get the physical and mental benefits, especially during peak training blocks (running 50-60 mpw with strength training).

almost_usual··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
I counteract it with Magnesium Glycinate. Works well for me.
almost_usual··on Amazon workers under pressure to up their AI usage are making up tasks
It’s preposterous, companies are blindly funding slop and the product is fool’s gold.
almost_usual··on Amazon workers under pressure to up their AI usage are making up tasks
Corporate tech has accelerated into a preposterous trajectory.

Burn resources at all costs to appear productive and use proxy metrics to measure success.

Fire productive employees to ensure we have resources to fund the proxy metrics.

AI slop fool’s gold is the product.

almost_usual··on American Dads Became the Parents Their Fathers Never Were
My mom left the house as a kid. Dad worked and did it all during the week. Definitely felt like this was a rare thing growing up. I did spend time with my mom on the weekend though.

As a father I try and balance it out but I definitely don’t do as much as my dad did growing up.

almost_usual··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Your body stores roughly 2000 calories in glycogen. They are burning calories but nowhere near the amount a middle pack would be at this pace.

So ~2800 calories of carbs with some fat being burned.

almost_usual··on Notes from the SF peptide scene

Only if you continue to push yourself while training. What used to be difficult absolutely gets easier in endurance after training.
almost_usual··on NASA announces unprecedented return of sick ISS astronaut and crew
I can’t imagine any other group who would be as calm as NASA astronauts. Maybe SEALs or other special forces.

It looks like there are a few astronauts that were SEALs, one returned December 9th from the ISS.

I work/program on CalTrain but that’s pretty common. NYC subway or BART seems a bit more challenging.
