Around 97-98 was really when I went deep into it mostly because of Starcraft. That led to battle.net which led to IRC and the rest is history.
At some point during addiction your body depends on these substances to operate and stopping becomes much more difficult. Alcoholics need to taper or take benzodiazepines to quit otherwise they may seize or die when going through withdrawals.
I would say anyone who begins drinking to numb the feeling of withdrawals (morning or middle of the night) is beginning the journey of serious alcoholism. That’s not really a craving it’s more of a need at that point.
What’s mildly annoying to me is their domain only returns an A record.
Starcraft came out when I was a kid, the online community of Battle.net is really what got me into programming and development.
I spent all my free time basically prepping for interviews knowing I didn’t want to work for the company acquiring us.
Got a higher paying job afterwards, made enough money to buy a house in the Bay, and quit working for startups after this.
I see functions I wrote hours ago, maybe not every line of code but pseudocode at least. There’s been plenty of times where I’ve solved bugs just visualizing code before falling asleep.
> PPUs also are restricted by a 2-year lock, meaning that if there’s a liquidation event, a new hire can’t sell their units within their first 2 years. Another key difference is that the growth is currently capped at 10x. Similar to their overall company structure, the PPUs are capped at a growth of 10 times the original value. So in the offer example above, the candidate received $2M worth of PPUs, which means that their capped amount they could sell them for would be $20M
> The most recent liquidation event we’re aware of happened during a tender offer earlier this year. It was during this event that some early employees were able to sell their profit participation units. It’s difficult to know how often these events happen and who is allowed to sell, though, as it’s on company discretion.

Edit:
I’m realizing we had the exact same conversation a month ago. It sounds like you have more insider information.
If humanity doesn’t rise to the challenge (degrowth) this could happen.
Fortunately there are smart people all over the world solving problems everyday and that is likely to continue.

This NDA wrinkle is another negative. Honestly I think the entire OpenAI compensation model is smoke and mirrors which is normal for startups and obviously inferior to RSUs.

If I were single and younger I’d likely want to be in office.
I do this for the rock sliders on my Tacoma.
> “This is not a joke,” he posted. “This guy wants to guillotine people.”
> On Saturday morning, Tan apologized about the death wish in a subsequent post, saying he was simply referencing a lyric in Tupac’s “Hit ‘Em Up,” but that it “wasn’t a good call” regardless. The notorious diss track famously added fuel to the fire of East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry, leading to Tupac’s murder in a drive-by shooting just three months after its release.
