allisdust··on Ask HN: Are ICs at tech companies usually so concerned about job performance?
I'm curious how there is so much work to do. Is it specific to a product?
allisdust··on VALL-E: Neural codec language models are zero-shot text to speech synthesizers
Or a dystopian paid chat bot that speaks in the voice of dead loved ones. Applications aren't all good unfortunately.
allisdust··on Bill Gates: I'm literally losing sleep over Java (1996)
Fear is the first step in taking steps to compete. Its an acknowledgement of the threat from a better product. If any company doesn't have that they will fail. This can be seen during the ballmer era where he totally ignored the threat posed by iPhone and ended up conceding entire mobile os market share to Apple and Google.

Whenever questions like why are they afraid of progress, it's for common good etc come up (which I feel are based on morality) , it makes sense to imagine yourself in their shoes and see what you would do.

allisdust··on Bill Gates: I'm literally losing sleep over Java (1996)
If your current OS is the market leader why wouldn't you lose sleep over it. They are running a business and have to worry about the competition. Progress on competing products might be good for consumers but not for the employees or shareholders of the company.
allisdust··on LearnCPP: Website devoted to teaching you how to program in C++
Another way to put it is: Rust is world's best c/c++ teacher. Once you understand and surpass borrow checker, your c++ code will be much less error prone.
allisdust··on Tell HN: Did you know that you can help restore a person’s eyesight for $50?
Most cataract surgeries in private hospitals cost around $200 in India including the lens cost. If its done in camps where multiple patients get it done the cost might primarily be lens related.
allisdust··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
Problem is the ring leaders of the scam call centres that actually finance the operations and move the stolen funds are usually not Indian residents. Once one call center is busted, they move to recruit another. The employees themselves aren't blameless either and need to be caught but the problem will simply rotate between countries if the brains are not caught. The reason there are so many scam call centres are there in India is the same reason there are so many customer support call centres: cheap English speaking labour.
allisdust··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
If only it would not gobble up so much memory. For an ide that has been around for this long, one would have assumed they would have switched to a more performant non gc language by now.
allisdust··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
Excellent summation. Majority of the software developers work on crud based frontend or backend development. When this thing's attention goes beyond the 4k tokens its limited to, there will be very less number of developers needed in general. Same way less number of artists or illustrators will be needed for making run of the mill marketing brochures.

I think majority wouldn't know what hit them when the time comes. My experience with chatgpt has been highly positive changing me from a skeptic to a believer. It takes a bit of skill to tune the prompts but I got it to write frontend, backend, unit test cases, automation test cases, generate test data flawlessly. I have seen and worked with much worse developers than what this current iteration is.

allisdust··on Linux Desktop Environments System Usage
Don't know why most of the distros default to gnome. It's an absolute nightmare for usability. Without extensions even bare minimum things can't be done. If you are a windows user switching to Linux, should definitely stay away from this steaming mess of a wannabe osx clone.
allisdust··on Russia’s apparent resilience is being kept up by policy tricks and cash
They have more than enough food to eat (except of course things that don't exactly grow there). They have surplus in energy and fertiliser.

What they would lack in the short and medium term are high tech products like chips, advanced medicine.

Given enough time and drive any energy and food surplus society can reinvent the high tech stuff.

Of course it doesn't mean they would, seeing how corrupt the whole ruling class is. But it is theoretically possible for them to be totally independent of the rest of the world. They are blessed with too many natural resources to not be able to do it.

allisdust··on Show HN: Port of OpenAI's Whisper model in C/C++
While there is no pure rust model yet, there is a crate with bindings to the cpp model (probably not to this one).
allisdust··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns
I just don't understand how people can't see the threat. All you have to do is keep showing bad news videos about inflation, crime rate, illegal immigration to turn population against the government subtly mixed with normal videos. They can also pacify people by subtly mixing good news videos. And anyone who thinks people aren't so easily gamed don't understand people. This is like cnn and fox news on steroids. One continuous drip of emotions fed by a foreign adversary.
allisdust··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns
It's banned overnight in India along with a lot of other Chinese apps. I don't see why that can't be done in USA under national security policies. It's ridiculous to let an app from foreign adversary which can manipulate citizen behaviour through its algorithms while being able to keep track of what interests whom is allowed to operate freely. Its frankly surprising they are even having this debate. Yes meta, Google and God knows what other companies are also in a position to do this. But then the government can always drag the executives to trial legally. They can't do any of that with a foreign company.
allisdust··on Rust in the 6.2 kernel
Honestly the rust web frameworks are quite good. I don't find them any more verbose than say typescript or golang because enough higher level types exist to abstract away complexity. Majority of api code is just crud and business logic so it makes any difference in which language it's written in terms of complexity.

And the rust ORM libraries are catching up with other languages so there is no additional advantage from picking a gc collected language.

allisdust··on Ask HN: How ready for daily driving is Asahi Linux?
The one I have is 2021 XPS 13. May be the 15 model is wired different somehow.
allisdust··on Ask HN: How ready for daily driving is Asahi Linux?
Dell XPS is the only laptop where I have seen this working reliably. Worst part is that thanks to zram, many distros removed hibernate functionality. So its not possible now to either sleep or hibernate on many laptop/distro combinations. This makes Linux unusable in most cases due to battery drain (and some times even dangerous as laptop gets super hot inside bag etc).
allisdust··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
The recession depending on who you ask seem to be either mild or not happening. All the government indicators (recent inflation, gdp, jobs report) seem to paint a thriving economy.

So why are these companies still shedding jobs? I'm starting to wonder if the tech industry is disproportionately impacted similar to dot com bubble from 2000.

allisdust··on Tell HN: Rust Is Complex
May I suggest you take some time to understand the concurrency and memory management parts of Rust a little more to figure out where your program is falling.

I agree it's not an easy language to pickup, but the use case you mentioned is a pretty common one and there are several ways to solve it. For example, any kind of config reading from a file needs it. Similarly, connection pools for DB etc are shared this way so its not an uncommon use case in day to day usage of Rust.

allisdust··on Tell HN: Rust Is Complex
It's a RWLock. Not a mutex. As long as no one is writing to it, readers are not blocked.
allisdust··on Tell HN: Rust Is Complex
For your issue there are two ways to achieve it:

1) Use lazy_static crate 2) Use a arc wrapped rwlock

allisdust··on Carefully exploring Rust as a Python developer
It sounds a bit like gate keeping :). Not to mention, Rust complexity can always be dialled down to a GC language if corresponding sacrifices in performance are accepted. There are a whole lot of domains where you can get away without using a single lifetime specifier anywhere.

I'm currently using it for developing rest api using the excellent warp crate and I wish more people use it for this use case as its quite suited for it.

allisdust··on People have been having less sex, whether they’re teenagers or 40-somethings
May be due to the same reason people lose interest in other pleasures of life. Having anything available freely and in abundance leads to losing interest in that thing (be it food/sex/movies). With most people becoming Liberal in their views on sex, its no more interesting than having a shoulder massage.
allisdust··on Is algae the new kale?
Btw, if you ever had Indian cuisine, you had hempseeds. Basically they can be integrated into any cuisine without being the main dish.
allisdust··on Shopify Is Illegal in Germany
GDPR is simple. It's a mechanism to keep foreign tech companies out of EU while not explicitly banning them (as it would result in reciprocal measures) by increasing the cost of doing business in EU. For those that do go all the way and try to follow the laws, periodic flaws found in implementation (which are inevitable given how complex these laws) are penalised heavy enough to make them think twice. If this is not there, software companies in EU which aren't competitive in general will be steamrolled by companies from other countries (but primarily from USA).

China also does this to ensure home grown tech eco system while at least being more truthful about.

allisdust··on Just don’t
I think you have explained it well. Since English is not my first language, I can't even tell that the word 'just' is supposed to be offensive (and probably same with many other speakers of English). However, attitude can easily put off people and that can be done using any set of words.
allisdust··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
That's not really true for India because unlike developed countries, the housing has a wide price range for any given area. Also it is actually preferable to rent in India because rent doesn't even cover half the emi. Overall, through a lot of measures like tax breaks and cheaper loans for housing developers building affordable housing, reduction in interest for low cost housing, free housing for poorer sections of the populace, government has made housing a non issue apart from a select set of cities like Mumbai where geographical constrains ensure higher prices and low availability.
allisdust··on Barilla passive cooker
We used to hear this encouraged as an efficient method for cooking rice on government radio when we were kids. Cooking gas was precious and everyone wanted to save it. Basically this is how probably everyone used to cook before pressure cookers became a thing.
allisdust··on Body Doubling
I don't know how but personally, this actually works.

Another thing that works is setting a not so exciting but also not so boring tv series playing on your mobile next to you and do work while it plays on. Again no clue how or why it works. My pet theory is that adhd brains just like multi tasking and keeping a portion of extra bandwidth zoned out is helpful in not getting distracted.

allisdust··on Indian Air Force inducts natively developed light combat helicopter ‘Prachanda’
Russia has nukes. Does it look like they are winning? Nukes are for last resort. No one is going to use nukes in limited conflicts.
