allears··on The Morality of the Gaza War
Israel has completely forfeited its 'morality.' The Bible says 'an eye for an eye,' not 'genocide for an eye.'
allears··on Computer software bugs led to F1's Malaysia farce: 'unacceptable'
This link goes to a story about Kamala Harris.
allears··on NRC issues first U.S. construction permit for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor
Here's a quote from everybody's favorite AI:

The most useful comparison: cost per MWh

Rather than comparing construction bills directly, levelized cost of energy (LCOE) incorporates construction, financing, operating expenses, fuel, and the amount of electricity produced.

Lazard's 2026 estimates are approximately:

    Utility solar: $40–$88/MWh

    Utility solar + storage: $61–$105/MWh

    Nuclear: $141–$276/MWh
These are unsubsidized estimates and represent a range of project assumptions rather than guaranteed costs. Lazard specifically notes that its nuclear estimate is based on the publicly available costs of Vogtle 3 and 4, while its solar-plus-storage figure incorporates both generation and storage.
allears··on Firefox's chief on why he hopes a redesign will help win users from Chrome
I'm using it now... Round tabs are dumb, a silly distracting unhelpful change. But I really like compact mode, gives me less browser and more website on my laptop.
allears··on Bill Gates's Blunt Warning on A.I
It's interesting how Gates has tried to morph from the no-holds-barred owner of a predatory software company to some kind of elder statesman. I certainly didn't trust him back then, and I see no reason to trust him now. Whatever he's trying to accomplish with these portentious pronouncements, you can be sure that it all stems from (unenlightened) self-interest.
allears··on Jensen Huang says AI distillation is 'competition.'
The remarks of a CEO are self-serving by definition. Otherwise he would be vulnerable to shareholder lawsuits.
allears··on Uber CEO says you should answer emails over the weekend
Any incentives to do that, or just threats if you don't?
allears··on The Plunging Price of Thought
That should be "thought" with quotes around it
allears··on We All Hated Busy Work. Now That It's Disappearing, It Turns Out We Miss It
We miss the salary too.
allears··on Jensen Huang Thinks A.I. Alarmism Has Gone Too Far
When you're making a fortune selling AI, it's hard to know just how to manipulate public opinion so that people are scared enough to give you money, but not so scared that they try to regulate you
allears··on What are the odds that AI will affect the election?
Future tense unnecessary. AI is currently, right now, affecting virtually everything. Anything you see, hear, or read, whether on social media or anywhere else, is already strongly influenced, if not completely created, by AI.

Even things that you are almost sure were made by a human still carry a seed of doubt, and that's all it takes for AI to have a massive influence.

allears··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Given that everything emanating from this administration has a political agenda, does this mean that Thiel is on the outs?
allears··on Trump Says His Contested Arch Would House Drones and Snipers
In order to control the angry mobs no doubt.
allears··on A.I. House Can Provide You with Connections. It Also Has a Dark Side
So, basically a frat house, except with a lot more money and a lot less oversight.
allears··on Spending on data centers and hardware now exceeds housing investment
Archeologists of the future will discover this article and remark on how prophetic it was.
allears··on Ask HN: What is still hard to do?
This is certainly true in the long run. However, there's a lot of dislocation along the way. Disruption may be good for profits, but not so good for the people who get disrupted. Not saying that progress is wrong, but it's not always pleasant to live through.
allears··on Gov. Newsom signs executive order targeting AI safety 'before it's too late'
He's creating a committee. Such brave and resolute action!
allears··on Trump rejects call by CEOs of Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI to slow AI down
How do you think that AI will create "abundance?" Are you thinking that it will somehow magically come up with solutions to climate change, war, corruption, the wealth gap, or any of the other ills that keep the majority of humanity scrambling to survive? Or do you just mean abundance for stockholders?
allears··on Houthis Used Claude Code to Develop Missile Guidance Software: Anthropic
Not hypocritical, just foolish. The US may "expect" it, but there are so many possible leaks that it's not technically possible.
allears··on Houthis Used Claude Code to Develop Missile Guidance Software: Anthropic
A perfect illustration of the fallacy that we can invent dangerous advanced tech but keep it for our own use only.
allears··on San Franciscans are having sex in robotaxis, and nobody is talking about it
If you can afford a robotaxi you can afford to get a room. This is just like the mile-high club, so you can say you did it.
allears··on Musk and Altman back Anthropic CEO on slowing AI down
If we're truly in an AI race with China, and if these companies are in competition with each other, I would be surprised if we could take these statements at face value. It's just another ploy, for whatever reason.
allears··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Nonsense. I can (and do) resist a lot of things. Society in general may well be screwed, but I'll at least hold onto a bit of self-respect.
allears··on Show HN: Titles – Can you write a better Hacker News title?
If HN has turned into a contest for the most clicks, I guess I missed the memo
allears··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
Dystopian and depressing, but I see his point -- I never thought Trump could be elected president either.
allears··on Trump threatens to halt trade with top partners unless Fed cuts rates
And this will pressure the Fed how? If the economy grinds to a halt, nobody's going to blame them.
allears··on A Cop's Case for Flock
Don't have to read the article -- of course police work gets easier with more surveillance. Police don't believe in privacy (except for themselves).

There's always a balance between freedom and security, and Flock has way overstepped that balance.

allears··on Dyson Toothbrush
Not only very expensive, but requires subscription for proprietary consumables. Definitely a niche product.
allears··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
Less time than it thinks? We ran out of time a while ago, it's already well in progress.
allears··on Blue-Collar Jobs Are the New Flashpoint in Data-Center Fight
Ask any blue-collar worker you know whether they want a data center in their neighborhood. This smells exactly like an astro-turfing operation.
