allard··on Ask HN: What do you wish digital assistants (Siri, Alexa, etc.) could do?
In Allo (and similar), if I begin with when, where, who..., a ? should magically appear at the right end of the line and float along there as the question fills.
allard··on Ask HN: Where do you go for learning about health and well-being?
http://whyisamericanhealthcaresoexpensive.blogspot.com et alia
allard··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
I believe Google will replace it — the Google Search Appliance is going away too. Something will pick up those customers. An announcement at I/O, which is pretty soon?
allard··on Ask HN: Who's making $300k to $1m as a cloud engineer?
300k is 300000, 300K is 307200, 1m is 0.001, 1M is 1000000

to throw around some figures too.

allard··on When did we stop caring about memory management?
If your closet or garage increased in volume at the rate of Moore's law, you'd pay less attention to how you put stuff away.
allard··on Ask HN: What are the most thought-provoking books that you have read?
arcology : city in the image of man
allard··on When does your religion legally excuse you from doing part of your job?
A clear piece, but the situation for government employees seems highly convoluted.
allard··on PowerLine: Status Line for Vim, Zsh, Bash, Tmux
Does anyone remember terminals with a status line? They get brief mention here — https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_terminal. On a well-populated Unix machine, it could show a list of logins and logouts, updated every minute.
allard··on Ask HN: Most hacker friendly laptop on the market?
The market is flooded — just buy any brand with a reputable repair rate at a price that fits.
allard··on The evolution of a programming language over four years
The name of the language doesn't appear until the fifth paragraph?!
allard··on The Man Who Saved Southwest Airlines with a '10-Minute' Idea
I tried to engage Southwest about this algorithm and it (email) was like talking to a brick wall.
allard··on Shutting Down a Service with 500M Requests per Month
Blame the accountants. We're engineers et al. We use SI.
allard··on Ask HN: Where did you meet your significant other?
finger and talk (as in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_(software))

There were 500 miles between us. She approached me. It would be a whole summer before we met f2f because she went to nanny in Europe. (Not my current SO.)

allard··on Ask HN: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Swam upstream so a few kids had a connection from their Pacific island-nation. Two would be in this 100 — http://www.articulab.justinecassell.com/projects/jrsummit/in....
allard··on Ask HN: What do you wear to programming interviews?
... beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes.
allard··on How to operate your Regency Model TR-1G transistor pocket radio receiver (1954) [pdf]
nice photo of TR-1 in Wikipedia entry for CONELRAD
allard··on Firechat and nearby communication
A couple months ago I installed this on two devices and could not get it to work off-net nor did I see a good description of how it is supposed to work in that case. I assume Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on but not connected to an access point.

I have seen mesh alive with XO-1s.

allard··on Moto 360 review
I've seen it drift more than 30 seconds over a few weeks. (Not sure if this is true of 4.4, say.)
allard··on Moto 360 review
Is NTP handled differently when Android is wearable? If not, I can imagine some will find the accuracy of the time lacking.
allard··on Senator Wyden: Your data’s yours no matter on whose server it lives
Isn't this the way Europe conceives and legislates this? (I ask half rhetorically and half genuine.)
allard··on Patching the Newton
An emulator called Einstein exists. (I fire it up on my tablet now and then for nostalgia.)
allard··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2014)

allard··on Ask HN: Open Courses vs. Master degrees value in the IT market
why isn't it Stanford's manual?
allard··on Mary Meeker's 2014 Internet Trends
It's a nit perhaps but being as this is technical stuff I'd prefer the standard SI prefixes rather than MM and the like used in some beancounting.
allard··on Poll: what smartphone do you use as your primary smartphone?
Samsung but I didn't choose it and I barely use it relative to a Nexus tablet. it is a hand-me-down. when I chose, it was HTC (twice).
allard··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired?
Saint Louis, remote or here, > 10 y of experience (see résumé); substantial completion of CS50, see github.com/ra too.

résumé — http://elm.nfshost.com/sansaddressforHN.pdf

Looking for contemporary technology (docker, eg; not necessarily), and great people — curious, smart, good taste.

rick % inboxpro (the usual commercial TLD. I poll that mailbox every five days but will increase that to every other day until one week from now.)
