allanrbo··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
Wondering the same. Also a libvirt and virsh user here, and pretty happy using commands such as `virsh snapshot-create ...`. I've used VMWare ESXi in the distant past, and from the screenshots it looks like Proxmox is maybe inspired by VMWare? So maybe a more polished and integrated GUI based experience than libvirt? Also looks like Proxmox supports containers in addition to virtual machines. Also I see from other comments that there's some features to migrate VMs between hosts, which would be a much more manual effort with libvirt.
allanrbo··on Animate Anyone: Image-to-video synthesis for character animation
Very impressive quality.
allanrbo··on Ask HN: Tutorial on LLM / already grasp neural nets
+1. Andrej Karpathy is an amazing and down to earth teacher on these topics!
allanrbo··on Discouraging the use of web application firewalls
I think of WAFs as an extra safety net. Defense in depth.

The author complained about the performance cost of WAFs in general, but not all WAFs have be structured like ModSecurity. They could for example be based on something like https://github.com/intel/hyperscan and perf is at a very different level.

allanrbo··on BBC World Service Announces Emergency Radio Service for Gaza
The page says "The Gaza service will be broadcast on MW 639kHz for morning and evening episodes." So I think this is within the normal AM broadcast band that most car radios can receive.
allanrbo··on Building a Digital Audio Mixer
The Teensy is awesome. Programmed one to slightly boost the bass of my audioengine a2’s. It’s been running reliably for years.
allanrbo··on Show HN: Pākiki Proxy – An intercepting proxy for penetration testing
Nice with native desktop UIs! It's like a lost art these days.

Did a desktop app some years back using wxWidgets. Slightly less ambitious than doing separate native UIs for each platform like you're doing here, but still gave me a native enough feel that I was happy with the compromise.

allanrbo··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
I always thought it was quite nice actually. Maybe I have bad taste :-D
allanrbo··on Embarrassingly Simple Text Watermarks
Seems too easily defeated?

echo "a string with funny unicode spaces" | iconv -f utf8 -t ascii//TRANSLIT

Though for languages that cannot be represented as ascii, such as Japanese as they paper is discussing, it's perhaps less trivial.

I think op was just saying as a bus on a local network for some very specialized application.
allanrbo··on TimeGPT-1
Only a hosted API for now it seems? On page 12 they mention https://www.nixtla.io/ .
allanrbo··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Using eBPF Beyond Observability?
Isn't it also used to intercept outgoing network connections and redirect them sidecar processes? Envoy and friends?
allanrbo··on Ubuntu-Debullshit: Remove Snaps and Snapd from Ubuntu. Installs Firefox from PPA
Yea I was going to say, just use Debian... But interesting that this exists. Like the Windows decrapify script.

allanrbo··on Tested reviews the Bigscreen Beyond, the smallest VR headset [video]
Love that bigscreen focuses on being lightweight. Sad there's no inside out tracking. Guess I can't have my cake and eat it :-)
allanrbo··on Apple and Google Are Introducing New Ways to Defeat Stringrays – Is It Enough?
I think they were referring to the typo. StRingray. :-)
allanrbo··on I built Excel for Uber and they ditched it
Another approach would be to use the Excel APIs. Both the classic desktop Excel and the web version has APIs to read/write cells and recompute. Rebuilding is more fun of course :-)

What can an individual do about this?
allanrbo··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Usb c devices i own: Apple MacBook laptop, Lenovo laptop, Sony headphones, Bose headphones, bike lights, headlamp, probably more. Lightning is the odd one out for me.
allanrbo··on Low-cost Smartwatch powered by ESP32 module
Very cool that this one has Lora!

Another fun low-cost smartwatch with fully customizable ROM is https://pine64.com/product/pinetime-smartwatch-sealed/ . Wearing one right now. Not as powerful a processor though, and only BLE for connectivity, but battery lasts days.

allanrbo··on FCC allows blocking traffic from robocall-friendly provider One Owl
A little bit off topic, I know, but I love how the FCC is using a plain text file here. No nonsense!
allanrbo··on Berlin Review: LAN Party
Very nostalgia inducing photos!
allanrbo··on DHCP is not blocked by ufw/iptables
Even within iptables / nftables / nft there's a ton of places to hook in. I always need to take a long hard look at this diagram to get it right: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iptables#/media/File:Netfilter...

Good explanation! And in the case of "I booted Linux 293k times in 21 hours" it wasn't just 100 times, it was 10,000 :-)
allanrbo··on I booted Linux 293k times in 21 hours
You do still have to select an N, but it's not as critical that the N gives 100% guarantee of the flaky failure (which can be really difficult or even impossible to achieve). Unlike regular binary search, robust binary search doesn't permanently give up on the left or right half based on just a single result.
