allanrbo··on Show HN: Spot – Simple, cross-platform, reactive desktop GUI toolkit for Go
Was looking for something like this some years back. Though I wanted Windows support too. Ended up switching to C++ to use wxWidgets, giving me small self contained binaries.
allanrbo··on Perplexica: Open-source Perplexity alternative
First I’m hearing of the meta search engine SearxNG too. Neat. Feel like we’ve come full circle, going back to meta search engines again.
allanrbo··on Anki can feel like punishment
Sure it’s tough, but still a great tool. Hard work is hard. Do you have any better ideas?
allanrbo··on Cloudflare Workers Now Support COBOL
2020
allanrbo··on DuckDuckGo was down
not down for me.
allanrbo··on Ask HN: Those who use an Android and macOS, how do you manage sync?
Syncthing
allanrbo··on Fiat brings back its 500e electric model for 2024, with 149 mile range
Kind of makes sense that ABC news (American Broadcasting Company) is US centric though :-)
allanrbo··on Ask HN: Can a Meta Quest 3 be connected to a PC using HDMI?
not hdmi, but display port over usb-c. Though it can't just show up as a plain display I think. Search for quest 3 link to learn more.
allanrbo··on Wayland, where are we in 2024? Any good for being the default?
Used it for a couple of months and actually had better perf and responsiveness than X11 on my Lenovo X1 Carbon with Intel graphics. For me, I eventually got too much of a wrist pain from my mouse scroll wheel scrolling incredibly slow. On X11 it is fixable using the imwheel utility, but for Wayland i concluded from several GitHub issue threads that nobody can agree on where the fix should be done. (This was a year ago or so, so don’t know if it has been fixed since).
allanrbo··on California Sees Two More Property Insurers Withdraw from Market
Tokio Marine America Insurance Co. and Trans Pacific Insurance Co.
allanrbo··on Super Mario 64's invisible walls explained [video]
My goodness, 3+ hours on this topic! I truly admire the passion! Fascinating!
allanrbo··on PaperBack: How to store arbitrary data on A4 sheets of paper (2007)
It says in the top "presents his new open source joke", but I actually think this sounds genuinely useful. So many other media formats become unsupported by modern operating systems. Cloud services get shut down left and right. Tapes and floppies and spinning rust gets demagnetized. Optical media has a lifespan too. We have paper from hundreds of years ago that is in decent condition.
allanrbo··on IrfanView
It made more sense to go through the effort to install IrfanView when there was no image previewer built into windows, in the days of Windows 95/98/ME/2000. Those only had MS Paint, and I think some versions only supported bmp files (no jpeg or gif). Windows XP had an ok image previewer.
allanrbo··on FuryGpu – Custom PCIe FPGA GPU
What an inspiring passion project! Very ambitious first Verilog project.
allanrbo··on New open source GPU is free to all
What an inspiring passion project! Very ambitious first Verilog project.
allanrbo··on Launch HN: Patchwork (YC W24) – Team communication based on feeds, not chat
Is it similar to Yammer?
allanrbo··on SnowflakeOS: Simple, Immutable, Reproducible
I thought at first it was related to Snowflake Inc., the data cloud company. But realize now that their logo is slightly different, https://www.snowflake.com/, so probably unrelated.
allanrbo··on Returns picked up from your house
Couldn't see the cost anywhere on the website.
allanrbo··on James Blake launches new platform Vault as 'solution' to streaming
Neat. Sounds a bit like Patreon.
allanrbo··on Earth Is Becoming Sentient
Fun thought. The internet is like a nerve system. The roads are like blood vessels.
allanrbo··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
Why do you say Mistral only possible because of Meta?
allanrbo··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2022)
You can also insert a timestamp in notepad.exe simply by pressing F5. (At least it used to be like this - haven't tried on newest versions of Windows).
allanrbo··on Freenginx: Core Nginx developer announces fork
In my opinion the original author did a really good job, so I found it interesting to know where and whether he might continue his vision.

Edit: I see now from the hg history that Igor hasn't been coding on Nginx for a decade actually.

allanrbo··on Freenginx: Core Nginx developer announces fork
Igor, the original author, left in 2022 according to wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Sysoev
allanrbo··on John Deere Announces Strategic Partnership with SpaceX
“ enable John Deere customers to be more productive, profitable, and sustainable in their operations as they continue to provide food, fuel, and fiber for their communities”. Wonder what kind of fiber they are referring to here. Edible? Or fiber optics? :-)
allanrbo··on UK announces commercial operations of longest land/subsea interconnector
How come Denmark can produce cheaper and less carbon intensive energy than the UK? Can't offshore windmills be built in the UK too?
allanrbo··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
But just because fewer people own one personally, will that necessarily mean fewer cars on the road? Might still be an increase in cars, but with a different ownership model. It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.
allanrbo··on Implementation of Mamba in one file of PyTorch
Love it when complex things are distilled down to just the essentials!
allanrbo··on An usable and maximally efficient C standard library
Fine looking general helper functions, but I find it a bit confusing to call this a "standard library". That has a particular meaning in C/C++ already.
allanrbo··on Turbo Pascal Turns 40
Fun fact: the original author of Turbo Pascal, Anders Hejlsberg, went on to lead development of C# and then later TypeScript.
