alkyon··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
If anything, the lack of competence is on the other side.

Was enriched uranium destroyed? I doubt it.

Have they even "obliterated" Fordow site buried 90 m deep inside the mountain? I have serious doubts.

Iran's nuclear program was set back some months if anything.

alkyon··on The Talented Ms. Highsmith
To me Highsmith's fiction is more about psychology than suspense.

It's not Agatha Christie, where you have no clue about what happens next or that the judge is the killer.

alkyon··on Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole
I would be surprised if the size doesn't matter in this case. On the one hand, tiny black holes tend to be rather short-lived. On the other, I suppose some threshold mass/energy is needed to generate a child universe that doesn't collapse immediately.
alkyon··on The impossible predicament of the death newts
The linked article about toxic blue-ringed octopus is even more interesting.

alkyon··on For algorithms, a little memory outweighs a lot of time
It's kind of insulting to the reader that they explain P complexity class without using the word polynomial ("all problems that can be solved in a reasonable amount of time")
alkyon··on Cool, but Obscure X11 Tools
Now you can upgrade to cat clock!

What I once used at work was XScreenSaver, getting a lot of admiring views/comments from passers-by.

alkyon··on It Was an Ambush
"Perhaps someone told Zelensky that Trump doesn’t read much, and reacts to images".

This redneck has no empathy whatsoever and it's not fit to lick Zelenskyy boots.

What he should read is Vonnegut and especially a chapter from Cat's Cradle "Why Americans are hated". I've always thought that Vonnegut was too pesimistic about the US. Now I think he was too optimistic.

alkyon··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Paid traitors are repaying their debts, hopefully they'll get what they deserve.
alkyon··on GulfOfMexico: Perfect Programming Language
In no time it will be forked with the new name to make it even greater
alkyon··on America's Dangerous Movement Toward Oligarchy, Authoritarianism and Kleptocracy
Then we have read different canons of history textbooks.

Engels used his inherited wealth to promote socialism just as Bernie could use his moderate wealth to promote social democracy. I don't see any contradiction here.

alkyon··on America's Dangerous Movement Toward Oligarchy, Authoritarianism and Kleptocracy
In the US they have the check & balances mechanism to ensure against "Who will watch the watchmen" problem. Still with the current president they are already being put through their paces. The constitution could be weakened by amendments or even disregarded if you have enough power in your grip.
alkyon··on America's Dangerous Movement Toward Oligarchy, Authoritarianism and Kleptocracy
Bernie Sanders if anything is a social democrat and certainly he is a poor man compared to Trump, Musk & affiliates.

His net worth is "only" 3 million dollars, if you serve half a century in Congress you could accumulate this kind of money (not to mention inheritance and royalties from all of the books he wrote).

What idea is that that a socialist needs to be poor? Is the Pope poor? Was Engels poor?

alkyon··on Dolní Vĕstonice Portrait Head: The oldest known human portrait in the world
One of the oldest representations of human face.

This Wikipedia article gives an example of a similar ivory figurine from Upper Paleolite, dated 26,000 - 24,000 BC.

alkyon··on Israel and the delusions of Germany's 'memory culture'
I never actually heard about Pankaj Mishra, but the after reading this text I immediately ordered his new book.

The attitude towards Gaza (with all the complexity of the subject) is a litmus test of humanity nowadays, just as it used to be the attitude towards the Jews a hundred years ago.

alkyon··on The FizzBuzz that did not get me the job
"I could already see my salary doubling in front of my eyes"

Where do they mention that they're unemployed now?

A sufficiently strong candidate can afford to wait a litle bit more.

alkyon··on The FizzBuzz that did not get me the job
Failing this interview saved the candidate from working for a crappy company, doubling their salary isn't really worth it.

Why on earth would the interviewer think that 0 is not a multiple of 3 and 5?

alkyon··on Why Canada should join the EU
South Africa has currently so warm relations with Russia that Hungary is the only EU country that would not block its accession in this surreal scenario.
alkyon··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
Finished Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator last year - what an excellent read! By Harris I also enjoyed Fatherland, his alternative history detective novel.
alkyon··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
What a nonsense - Poland actually had full lockdown and did close schools during the pandemic (the English word is not pandemia but pandemic BTW).

From Wikipedia:

On 10–12 March 2020 lockdown-type control measures were implemented, closing schools and university classes, offices, and cancelling mass events, and were strengthened on 25 March, limiting non-family gatherings to two people and religious gatherings to six and forbidding non-essential travel

alkyon··on Fructose in diet enhances tumor growth: research
With low fructose content (less then carrots per 100g), it's not a stupid choice. Naturally, if you don't binge on it, otherwise 2-3 slices daily won't kill you. I mean wholegrain, sourdough bread, to be precise.
alkyon··on Geometric line-art of Wacław Szpakowski (2017)
Math meets art, this is exactly what I thought too.

Was always fascinated by Hilbert curves.

alkyon··on Premature Graying of Hair: Review with Updates
There are studies that support this: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33779525/

Conclusions: A pooled analysis of available randomized controlled clinical trials demonstrated that Vitamin B2 400 mg/day for three months supplementation had significant effect on days, duration, frequency, and pain score of migraine attacks.

For some months I've been taking 200 mg/day and it reduced the frequency of my migraine attacks in half.

alkyon··on Character amnesia in China
Do you expect him to tatoo a word "racist" on his forehead (in kanji)?

That you even dare to quote this pseudo scientific crook is just mind boggling.

Relevant quote:

What is called for here is not genocide, the killing off of the populations of incompetent cultures. But we do need to think realistically in terms of "phasing out" of such peoples.

Calling his output research is abhorrent.

alkyon··on Character amnesia in China
Maybe parent was referring to the studies by Lynn, a self-declared "scientific racist".

I think that despite lower IQ scores on average South Korea has been consistently beating Japan in go in the recent years, and more importantly they get rid of hanja (Korean version of kanji) from their writing system.

alkyon··on A Chopin waltz unearthed after nearly 200 years
Lang Lang doesn't need further promotion, but still his showmanship is really not in the spirit of Chopin's muisc.

I would like to hear an interpretation of it by someone who won International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in the recent years (like Blechacz or Liu for instance).

alkyon··on A Chopin waltz unearthed after nearly 200 years
This is not about handwriting, the key thing is that this really sounds like Chopin - a true signature is there even if not written by hand.

I can't recommend more Alan Walker's "Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times", which I happen to be reading now.

alkyon··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
This is whataboutism.

Isreal maybe is not my cup of tea, but at least they have some justification for waging their war because they were attacked first. So Israel with all its faults is not in the same league with Russia.

Edit: typo

alkyon··on Goodbye from a Linux Community Volunteer
"Supply the country" is misrepresentation. He's not a baker. Microprocessors manufacrured by Baikal Electronics were used by military (however defective they were).

I don't think it's persecution what Linus did, it is a necessity

alkyon··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
yes, exactly - this is my point
alkyon··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
Maybe this is improvement in some areas, still I got spurious reasoning and inability to connect three simple facts:

Yes, "el presente acta de nacimiento" is correct in Spanish.

Explanation:

"Acta" is a feminine noun that begins with a stressed "a" sound. In Spanish, when a feminine singular noun starts with a stressed "a" or "ha", the definite article "la" is replaced with "el" to facilitate pronunciation. However, the noun remains feminine.

Adjectives and modifiers that accompany the noun "acta" should agree in feminine gender and singular number. In this case, "presente" is an adjective that has the same form for both masculine and feminine singular nouns.
So, combining these rules:

"El" (definite article used before feminine nouns starting with stressed "a")
"Presente" (adjective agreeing in feminine singular)
"Acta de nacimiento" (feminine noun with its complement)
Therefore, "el presente acta de nacimiento" is grammatically correct.
