alkyon··on The influence of anxiety: Harold Bloom and literary inheritance
Bloom was a rare exception to Lem's law: nobody reads anything and even if they read they don't understand, and even if they understand they immediately forget
alkyon··on US economy sheds 92,000 jobs in February in sharp slide
Already discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47275035
alkyon··on U.S. Capabilities Are Showing Signs of Rot
I was able to read it whole without gift link but with reader mode turned on
alkyon··on Iran war wreaking havoc on shipping and air cargo, could create global delays
The only thing Trump achieved so far was replacing Khamenei with Khamenei. Otherwise, it's a total disaster from the strategic point of view. Making the US that much weaker in the long run is somewhat ironic for a guy wearing a MAGA hat.
alkyon··on Dark Alley Mathematics
I also enjoyed: https://blog.szczepan.org/blog/los-alamos-primer/

Although there is small error regarding the neutron number calculation. I assume 3/4 of the neutrons are lost and then the author can multiply by 1/4 to get the result that the naturally occurring uranium is safe (as its neutron number is less then 1)

alkyon··on Child prodigies rarely become elite performers
For the super-prodigy category, someone like Mozart or Chopin, who could compose symphonies or polonaises at the age of 8, it's almost certain to maintain their elite status in adulthood (as opposed to someone who just plays the piano well or skipped a class or two in elementary school).
alkyon··on The longest Greek word
Probably it's Middle Liddel, I haven't decided to buy the unabriged version due to its unwieldy size, high prize and because it is 80 years old. Apart from this, it's fully available online.

Just started relearning Ancient Greek after twenty years and I highly recommend Cambridge Greek Lexicon.

alkyon··on Show HN: Jmail – Google Suite for Epstein files
Not surprisingly Lolita was one of them:

https://www.jmail.world/search?q=lolita

alkyon··on Size of Life
They do have genes and are subject to natural selection so to say the least they are a clear borderline case.
alkyon··on Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds
Mechanically separated meat is a marketing term. It's neither 100% meat (in fact it contains tons or fat and joints) nor a good quality meat (this one is sold separately). I don't buy any products that list it among its ingredients.

Ground beef its not the same thing

alkyon··on Brexit reduced UK GDP by 6-8%, investments by 12-18% [pdf]
It only makes sense to compare GDP between countries on PPP basis. Otherwise you don't account for currency rate fluctuations and difference in averge price level.

IMF figures for 2025:

87% GDP per capita PPP, 50% nominal GDP per capita

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)...

alkyon··on OpenAI researcher announced GPT-5 math breakthrough that never happened
They started believing the very lies they invented.
alkyon··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
The future is now
alkyon··on Gore Vidal: American Prophet
I have some good memories of Julian (though they are vague after 10 years or so and I would need to reread). Only recently -- after a long procrastination -- I read Myra Breckinridge. This one is even better, though politically incorrect I admit.
alkyon··on OpenAI Is Just Another Boring, Desperate AI Startup
Their only moat is that they started 'AI revolution'. More shock waves like DeepSeek release are still to come. Not too mention that LLM->AGI transition in near future is a moot point. They're riding the wave but for how much longer?
alkyon··on U.S. Lost 32,000 Private-Sector Jobs in September, Says Payroll Processor
Next major crisis (like worst-case scenario AI bubble crash) could cause US economy to shed 3 million jobs. Unemployment rate reached 9% in 2010, now it is just 4%. 32k is a fairly insignificant number compared with 160 million employed overall.
alkyon··on Bach Cello Suites (2024)
Thanks! Never heard of this podcast, quite interesting.

Comparing various recordings is a rabbit hole I like falling into.

alkyon··on Greatest irony of the AI age: Humans hired to clean AI slop
Before AI even attains the promised AGI level, we all will be driven mad by 'slopocalypse' like in one of the PKD stories:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_Pitch_(short_story)

alkyon··on IG Nobel Prize Winners 2025
After consuming even more: >> .. et toi?
alkyon··on The Fisherman and His Wife (1857)
Another interesting one: Rumpelstiltskin

alkyon··on The Rise and Fall of the British Detective Novel (2010)
Which of them did you like best? Apart from obvious choices like Poe, Doyle or Christie.
alkyon··on Amish men live longer
Road fatalities in Poland and Czechia were 50 per million inhabitants in 2022 according to this report. https://road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu/document/download... This is already less than Italy and only slightly above EU average. I don't think that small number affects much LE though.
alkyon··on Bertrand Russell to Oswald Mosley (1962)
There is a transcription but reading the original letter, typewritten by Bertrand Russell, with all the typing corrections that probably stemmed from some kind of holy anger he must have felt responding to someone like Mosley, was incredibly more pleasurable.
alkyon··on The Washington Post Fired Me – But My Voice Will Not Be Silenced
Here you have it: https://twitter.com/i/status/1965931096539017536

The late Mr. Kirk was seriously messed up.

alkyon··on Grapevine canes can be converted into plastic-like material that will decompose
In theory yes, in practice they will be "exported" to a thrid world country with limited processing capabilities and directly dumped into the ocean.
alkyon··on Amish men live longer
In the last ten years Poland life expectancy has risen by 5 years, in the same time period US was almost stalled. Now (as of the 2025 projection), Poland has slightly better LE overall.

However, approx. 9% of US population is uninsured, in Europe (including Eastern Europe) health care systems are universal.

Edit: Even for those insured, insurance claim rejection rate is 19%

alkyon··on Japan sets record of nearly 100k people aged over 100
Let us not conflate sophistication with number of ingredientes.

One of the most refined food I know is classic French omlette with just two ingredients, eggs and butter.

I don't say the Japanese lack refinement (sushi is one example of this), still there are a lot of complex Italian dishes as well.

alkyon··on Models of European metro stations
Right, my mistake.
alkyon··on Japan sets record of nearly 100k people aged over 100
It's easier to prepare ramen than pizza IMO. Even if ingredients are simple, you need a lot of skill to make a good Neapolitan pizza.

Risotto is even harder for various reasons. And what about Sartù di riso?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sart%C3%B9_di_riso

alkyon··on Models of European metro stations
Very nice. One nitpick: Malaga-Fuengirola C-1 line is suburban train and not metro (C stands for Cercanías)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1laga_Metro

Warsaw Metro has 36 station but only one is included. Metro systems of Kyiv, Minsk, Saint Petersburg and Moscow are not shown at all.

Edit: Removed Vilnius as it has only plans for a metro system
