alixr··on Steve Jobs threatened Palm’s CEO, court documents reveal
I'll always hold respect for him, despite what people say he was just as much a part of the home computer revolution as Gates and Woz.
alixr··on Facebook
Was WhatsApp really that successful? I can't imagine it caught on with many young adults or older who have no trouble paying for SMS given the convenience. Is their demographic comprised of kids?
alixr··on Apple’s iPhone 5 touchscreen is 2.5 times faster than Android devices
Agree and disagree. The touch screen is the most important aspect of a touchscreen device. Observable lag affects the user experience when they're moving faster than the device will allow.

It is a big deal but I don't think the majority of users are bothered because they see it as an inherent trait of a computer to lag.

alixr··on Unity Game Engine to Get Official 2D Game Support and a Built-In Ad Solution
Still waiting on that PS Vita support they promised.
alixr··on Ask HN: What's a reliable long-term personal storage medium?
I know you said you don't trust digital storage, but discs remain the best way to backup files for me. I purchased a blu-ray burner a couple years back and I've hardly made it through my first stack of discs. The blu-ray discs should easily outlast any other storage medium if they're kept in proper conditions. It comes down to your ability to keep track of them, not whether they'll go bad on you.
alixr··on Dave Chappelle Returns to Standup with Stories to Tell
I tried to get tickets to the show in Mountain View, completely sold out almost immediately save for a few "accessible" seats. I considered showing up with crutches or a wheelchair.

I hope Netflix picks him up for a new season of the show. He'd get the creative freedom, they'd get another exclusive, and everyone is happy.

alixr··on The Need For A Low Cost iPhone
You shouldn't render your blog's contents with JS.
alixr··on Elixir Design Goals
As someone who's just started with Ruby/Rails what are the benefits of switching to Elixir?

alixr··on Chromecast Teardown
I guess you miss a lot when JS is disabled by default :P
alixr··on Chromecast Teardown
Even more amazing was the little yellow square about the size of a surface mount resistor was highlighted as 2GB of flash. I couldn't even spot the cyan square for 512MB of ram.
alixr··on Tesla Nabs 8% of the U.S. Luxury Car Market
While most BMW's are expensive, I would consider the 7-series line "luxury".
alixr··on Khan Academy now accepts Bitcoin via Coinbase
I could say you're part of the greater fool theory anytime you get paid in or sell something for fiat money. It only has value as long as people are willing to accept it, same thing applies to Bitcoin.

But Bitcoin is also an incredibly small market and as such it's susceptible to manipulation from already wealthy individuals like the Winklevii. Unfortunately for them bitcoin are worthless without circulation (i.e. people willing to accept them).

Bitcoin gained a lot of traction and new blood this year, most of these newcomers are standing around wondering where things will go without thinking about why they invested in the first place. People also don't seem to understand it's still in testing despite the high value.

alixr··on Khan Academy now accepts Bitcoin via Coinbase
Transactions in person and Bitcoin ATM's will be the bread-and-butter of exchanging fiat money for BTC as it gains widespread adaptation.
alixr··on Khan Academy now accepts Bitcoin via Coinbase
Don't get greedy.
alixr··on Man building a 3D-printed replica Aston Martin DB4
He could have used carbon fiber and spent less with a better outcome.
alixr··on [dead]
Are you serious? He runs an online business, if that is his source of income it can be managed anywhere.

If I had to choose between prison and becoming a refugee the answer should be obvious. All over the world, people flee similar situations everyday.

alixr··on First Open Source Airplane Could Cost Just $15,000
This is great, I've been wanting to get into aviation for some time but the barrier of entry is steep.

Using their plans as a guideline for building an ultralight instead of a light sport aircraft would reduce the cost dramatically. Ultralights have much lower limits but don't require any formal training/licenses.

In the end you could probably build an ultralight for the cost of a pilots license.

alixr··on Dark Snow Project
I've never been a fan of JS and this is why I have it disabled by default in Chromium. Just whitelist the domains you make use of and the rest of the internet is smooth sailing.
alixr··on Schools ask parents to stump up £200 for iPads
Efficient use of tablets could make them an invaluable educational tool but something tells me they wouldn't bother going through the tedious process of acquiring digital versions of textbooks, assignments, reports, etc.
alixr··on Bootstrap 3 RC1
I've never been a fan of bootstrap, namely because nobody modifies it and all websites end up looking the same.

But I will say its nice that they're going Flat. Much easier on the eyes, and much simpler to creative a responsive layout for multiple screen sizes.
