alfredp··on Ask HN: Why is this C code not working as intended?
(M1GetN0(iNumber << 24))

You have a typo in the second function.

alfredp··on Ask HN: Resources/talks/outlines for modern PHP practices?
Look at Awesome PHP: https://github.com/ziadoz/awesome-php

You are now probably going to get to learn about using composer to pull down PHP packages. (similar to node's npm)

Also, look at the PSRs for coding standards: http://www.php-fig.org/faq/

alfredp··on Ask HN: How can I add 10-15k to my annual income this year?
Tutor programming and math
alfredp··on Managing Memory in Javascript is Hard
I would love to know if using emscripten will make memory usage more deterministic.
alfredp··on Ask HN: Where/How can we find temp Tech Workers for a week in NYC?
Do you have contact info?
alfredp··on Startup Game
These guys run a startup game: http://tiltnyc.net/about
alfredp··on Get A Job: The Craigslist Experiment
I posted an ad in the newspaper with a similar kind of experiment in mind. A dead marketing dude was daring me to do something crazy. What's the worst that can happen? (About midway through this: http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/Newsletters/aslz_winners...) You can read this first to see what he actually dared me to do.

The short version of what happened: my cellphone was ringing off the hooks and I had to just turn it off for a few weeks. Totally insane response.

alfredp··on Hey, Bethesda Let’s settle this
This reminds me of a certain high stakes rock-paper-scissors match... For future reference, use scissors against normal people: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/29/arts/design/29scis.html
alfredp··on Steve Pavlina releases 1000+ personal development articles into public domain
I have sold 6 so far. I don't have any tracking but I believe they all came from my postings in Steve Pavlina's forums.

Somebody else did an iPhone app - which I am guessing is doing way better: http://www.stevepavlina.com/forums/technology-technical-skil...

alfredp··on Steve Pavlina releases 1000+ personal development articles into public domain
Pretty shameless, but not a plug (as HN is clearly not the target market). Here's something I did the day after he public domained his articles: http://alfredpang.com/steve-pavlina-blog-collection/
alfredp··on Bloglines to close
Here's what I want:

I just started using Instapaper recently - if there was an RSS reader integrated, I can easily add stuff into my to-read list. (OR, bloglines can integrate Instapaper into their reader - and that would also be hot.)

alfredp··on Ask HN: How do you deal with suicidal thoughts ?
Besides seeing a professional, there are some random things: (I don't know your situation so hence the randomness)

- Read this: http://whitehottruth.com/white-hot/the-manifesto-of-encourag...

- If you have sappy depressing music playing all the time, turn it off. Mood is affected by music.

- Go for a walk.

- Don't drink alone.

- Go to church.

- Realize that there are things in your life that you can't change. And things that you can change. Accept the things you can't change. Change the things that you can change.

alfredp··on Ask HN: Have any of you successfully tried the whole social skydiving thing ?
+++ for the Toastmasters suggestion. It's not so much the public speaking practice, but also the mingling pre and post meeting that would help.
alfredp··on I assume I'm below average
I think that is better to know exactly where you are at, rather than to assume one way or another. That way, when it comes time to use your skill (or lack thereof), you know exactly how far you can go.

The assuming that you're below average thing - it is just a reminder to be humble and to constantly work on your basics - having a beginner's mind.

alfredp··on How Game Theory Solved a Religious Mystery
Poker players would instantly recognize the similarity of the money splitting problem to negotiating a deal at the final table of a poker tournament (say final 2, 3, 4). It isn't always about dividing the payouts proportional to size of your stack and there are human factors involved.
alfredp··on Still hatin' on git: now with added Actual Reasons
I felt the same way about git but I wasn't able to articulate it as well as he did. Go mercurial!
alfredp··on A Cover Letter To Penny Arcade
Does any know if the job actually required Javascript? As cool as the comic was, it sounded like it was a must have.
alfredp··on Ask HN: Best task management software for small teams?
trac is more issues tracking but you can certainly use it for task management: http://trac.edgewall.org/
alfredp··on What Programming Langauge Are You Learning?
haxe, targeting Flash; yeah I'm serious, haha!
alfredp··on Book published using tweets without permission, backlash ensues
The real question is - would people be foaming at the mouth if this was an e-compilation that didn't cost you anything to download?
alfredp··on Games and trash talking in the workplace foster better team interaction
Foosball tables would work too right? But I can see the appeal of a card game.
alfredp··on Richard Feynman and The Connection Machine
Oops didn't mean to dup! I came across it because of all the cloud computing stuff that's happening - and reminded me of when all the powerful computing came down in price. Just wanted to go back in time to see how people used up all the extra computing power.
alfredp··on Ask HN: Mercurial or git?
We ended up with mercurial. We needed Windows, Linux, OSX and code in all kinds of languages.

git is fine I suppose - but we needed to support Windows and I'd rather know that Windows is supported properly (mercurial), rather than kinda hoping it works (git). Things might have changed since the last time I looked.

In either case, be careful with case-sensitive/non-sensitive file systems.

Also, consider the learning curve difference as you will suddenly become the go-to guy for issues.

In the end, I'm really a Bond fan: http://importantshock.wordpress.com/2008/08/07/git-vs-mercur...

alfredp··on How to recruit a hacker partner
Let's go the other way... Let's suppose I am a hacker and I am looking for a business type or partner for YC, what kind of guy am i looking for?

Assuming that there is already trust and respect - I would want someone who can bring this to the table:

1. someone who understands a particular market & its needs 100%

2. someone to bounce design/sales/marketing discussions off

3. someone who has social and professional connections that I don't have

4. someone who can cook (because I don't have this skill)

Out of all these 1 & 2 is most important - as hackers don't usually have a good sense for UI and users.

If you find a hacker you want - sell yourself with these points.

alfredp··on C++: A language for next generation web apps
if you're on an embedded device, this is actually not a satire
alfredp··on The Mandelbrot Set by A. K. Dewdney (1985 Scientific American article)
I came across the article in "The Magic Machine". http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Machine-K-Dewdney/dp/071672144...

I seem to remember doing a very blocky Mandelbrot set on a 286. Good times!

alfredp··on Zed Shaw: Why I (A/L)GPL
Today, musicians make products (music) that can be easily duplicated at no cost. We acknowledge their value by compensating them through the purchase via proper channels (CDs, iTunes, concerts) and express our appreciation by being fans.

Software creators are not unlike these musicians; you pretty much need to have a record deal in order to get the money and the mainstream fans.

In Zed Shaw's case, he's basically using GPL ensures that other people are not using his work to get the record deals.

alfredp··on The Happiness Project - Making Yourself Happier
Going to the library or bookstore to read makes me happy. I just finished reading "Peaks and Valleys" (by the author of "Who Moved My Cheese"). peaksandvalleysthebook.com
alfredp··on Ask YC: Auction-based pricing?
the goal of this auction pricing is not to increase occupancy, but to maximize profit especially from the customers that can afford it
