alexrson··on Ask HN: Just Quit my job, what now?
Use the leftover salary from your previous high paying job to take a well deserved break. I think your question will answer itself over the course of a month or two of relaxation.
alexrson··on How are the 30 inch monitors working out for you?
I have a 30" next to a 24" but I find myself using the 24 more often. I adhere to the 80 columns per line rule so I don't really have problems with horizontal neck movements. Even at 24" there's plenty of room for side by side windows.
alexrson··on Ask HN: What's in your .bashrc?
Aliases for misspellings of various linux commands and environment variables pointing to important work directories.

That and my PATH.

alexrson··on How I Fired Myself
If your data is not backed up it may as well not exist.
alexrson··on The Python documentation is bad
The python documentation is adequate. The only thing I think it needs is more example code.
alexrson··on Microsoft Makes Retail Versions Of Office Single Install
The problem with Office is that it is too good.

Until free/open alternatives like libreOffice or googleDocs catch up MSFT has no incentive to hold down the bloat or demonstrate good customer service.

alexrson··on Bill Gates has donated over $36,854,000,000 in his lifetime
Not anyone can dump money on a problem. You have to have the money first.

To be clear, though, I really respect the Gates foundation's philanthropy philosophy. They are about achieving quantified results rather than just doing something trendy.

alexrson··on "Website like Amazon"
I want a painting like the Mona Lisa.
alexrson··on Stop Working More than 40 Hours a Week
I think a more precise message would be "Stop caring about time rather than productivity"
alexrson··on Stop Working More than 40 Hours a Week
I have to agree. The first two hours before everyone else shows up are my most productive.
alexrson··on Need Caffeine? Find coffee places near you (my first hack)
Very good, sir!
alexrson··on Ex-Facebookers launch MemSQL (YC W11) to make your database fly
Congratulations, Eric!
alexrson··on Hunting Down My Son's Killer
I stongly urge you to look into Ataluren (also referred to as PTC124, in the literature). It has a number of advantages over gentamicin and may be a better long term solution. It is currently in clinical trials for a number of premature termination codon (PTC) diseases. Check out this paper: http://ajrccm.atsjournals.org/content/182/10/1262.long
