alexkadis··on Sloth – Mac app that shows all open files and sockets in use
If you want to build a simple UI on top of a script for Mac, I recommend Platypus: https://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

The app has been around for years, is open source, and works really well.

alexkadis··on Image optimization decreased website's page weight by 62%
On Windows, I only need to optimize images occasionally and tend to use the free version of https://kraken.io There are probably better solutions, but this is very easy and no install needed.

On Mac, you're definitely right that ImageOptim is the best.

alexkadis··on Wine 3.0 Released
If you can borrow a computer with iTunes on it, you can replace the DRM files with MP3 versions. https://www.wikihow.com/Convert-Protected-Audio-Into-a-Plain...

Hope that helps.

This is a fantastic explanation. Thanks! (Also, I love the gifs)
alexkadis··on Show HN: Cinc – GitHub for recipes
I forgot about ETM! Thanks for creating it. Just logged back in and there was a friendly note about the new features (really good idea!). FYI there's one bug on the page:

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

alexkadis··on Apple Machine Learning Journal
It looks like some Node.js static site generator.

- The URL structure doesn't seem to be dynamic. For instance, https://machinelearning.apple.com/2017/ doesn't give a list of all articles from 2017, just a response of "Not found" (at least it gives a 404 error, so that's nice).

- The js files make extensive use of `require()` which is often used by Node.js developers http://fredkschott.com/post/2014/06/require-and-the-module-s...

alexkadis··on Women Engineers on the Rampant Sexism of Silicon Valley
There's an accompanying article[1]. It's all incredibly moving. Erica Baker said one of my favorite quotes from the video, "Everybody talks about diversity and getting people in the door. We measure those numbers. We don't really talk much about the inclusion part. What are you doing to make sure that everybody is included and feels safe and supported and valued in your organization?"

alexkadis··on Introducing Keybase Chat
Is it technically possible for Signal/Whatsapp to use Keybase keys in lieu of phone numbers? If so, how practical would it be to add this as an option?
alexkadis··on Spinner
The highest integer for the random number generator is 9,999,999,999
alexkadis··on We Need a Better PC
I have to agree 100%. My work computer is an EliteBook and the headphone jack has constant static, the fan runs high even on simple tasks, and the trackpad is downright terrible. I prefer my older MacBook Air's hardware by far.

alexkadis··on These researchers have discovered the perfect password that’s easy to remember
The title of the article a bit overzealous but the system the researchers designed is actually really cool. Direct link to their paper: http://www.isi.edu/natural-language/mt/memorize-random-60.pd...
alexkadis··on Clearbit Open Graph Logo Spec
I agree completely. I don't see why this additional spec is wanted/needed.

alexkadis··on Why we use HTTPS for every .gov website we make
I know this is slightly off topic, but I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. Can you make https://www.annualcreditreport.com into a .gov HTTPS A+ grade secure site? It's so easy for people to get scammed by fake sites, it'd be great to say, "go to creditreport.gov - it's the real one"
alexkadis··on A New Codecademy
I seriously thought they just changed their name. Turns out I've been reading it wrong all along.
