alexisnorman··on Nodes – JavaScript-based 2D canvas for computational thinking
This looks amazing but the performance is a bit worrisome being entirely in JavaScript / web based; if you've ever made a complex Max patch using the native app, it is incredibly memory intensive. Maybe with all the improvements / sick libraries we have now with 3D, audio, processing, etc. will make that moot; but laptop fans go wild on Max (which is mostly Java)..
alexisnorman··on MuseNet
Is the tool out yet? Not sure if I'm missing a link somewhere on that page. Excited to try this out!
alexisnorman··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
Second that, pry rules!
alexisnorman··on Early Hackers Used Whistles from Cap’n Crunch Cereal Boxes
Thank you. People are just now starting to ban him from conferences and what not, but he's still finding his way to prey upon young people in our communities.
alexisnorman··on Vaping 'can damage vital immune system cells'
With marijuana cartridges, I have been wondering what kind of temperature something like a 1100mAh c-cell battery maxes out at; because they can get hot.

I use mmj for an autoimmune disease, so it feels pretty ironic to read vaping damages immune system cells; will have to go back to the Volcano.

alexisnorman··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
I have had so many of these "free one-month extensions" from late Prime packages that I currently have six months of Prime membership credits applied to my account. I've been joking lately that if I were to actually pay for 2 day shipping, I'd get my package on-time.
alexisnorman··on Ffffound is shutting down
Right? I had the same feeling when I saw this post. It's been almost ten years since I frequented FFFFOUND, but it's still weird to see it go. This site seriously opened me up to some genius art when I was in the most "creative" phase of my life; so much respect and thanks to the operators. RIP.
alexisnorman··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2017)
Seems like the buttons to apply are greyed out; is there another way to submit an application?

alexisnorman··on Ask HN: Any recommendations on resources for learning one algorithm a day?
Highly recommend Grokking Algorithms for beginners and refreshes.
alexisnorman··on A Symbol Neo-Nazis Use to Target Jews Online
I like that he deleted his comment that said "I am a white nationalist".
alexisnorman··on A Symbol Neo-Nazis Use to Target Jews Online
Seriously, are they flocking to tweets based off white nationalists they follow or are they searching for anything with "((("? Either way, I'm curious if there's a way to just make it irrelevant.
alexisnorman··on React/Redux Links: a curated list of tutorials for React, Redux, ES6, and more
Was going to ask for a TypeScript suggestion, thanks! I wonder how far off the VS Studio setup is from Visual Studio Code as I've been using the latter lately.
alexisnorman··on Eye-tracking app lets you make music hands-free
Reminds me of how Jason Becker now composes music after his battle with ALS: http://www.instigatorblog.com/jason-becker-and-the-power-of-...
alexisnorman··on Intro.js – Step-by-step guide and feature introduction for your website
Another good one for the road is HubSpot's Shepherd: http://github.hubspot.com/shepherd/docs/welcome/

Just had a really great experience creating walkthroughs with it.

alexisnorman··on Best things and stuff of 2015
This has been by favorite way of researching new music for quite a while. I'll usually start with an album I really enjoy and then read reviews or checkout lists with that album included to find similar (and sometimes totally different!) albums and artists. I know a lot of people who praise discogs.com but RYM deserves way more credit.
alexisnorman··on Why Starbucks actually helps mom and pop coffeehouses (2007)
I wonder how this works in places that are much more spread out than NYC or San Francisco. I live in Phoenix and there are drive-thru Starbucks at what seems like every intersection but it seems like mom and pop shops are pushed out of this equation here. One popular local shop closed down this year after a drive-thru Starbucks opened up in the same plaza. People here are definitely more in line with corporate (/more convenient?) businesses than the little guys, so maybe that has something to do with it.
alexisnorman··on Beware of ads that use inaudible sound to link your phone, TV, tablet, and PC
Kind of like a reverse Portable People Meter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nielsen_Audio#Portable_People_...
alexisnorman··on Show HN: New interface for Reddit – What do you think?
The waste of space makes me wonder how it'd feel in a grid layout instead of one big column. Maybe throw some bootstrap on there, add some rows and col-lg-3 classes to the posts and it might feel a little better. What's your goal with this?
alexisnorman··on Glowforge launches consumer-grade laser cutter
I can't count the number of times a fire has started in my university woodshop because of smoldering debris and general lack of safety knowledge with laser cutters. I would assume this is something to be aware of with the Glowforge but I don't see any safety information on your webpage. Is this something to still worry about with 40W and 45W lasers?
alexisnorman··on Ask HN: How to get started with VR?
I've developed a couple games for the Rift (both DK1 & DK2) and I highly recommend starting with Unity. It's kind of ridiculous how fast you can get off the ground with your own FPS game using the Oculus SDK plugin. There's a lot of great video tutorials out there that can really speed up learning everything too. Note!: If you're developing on OSX, heads up as Oculus has stopped releasing new versions for it so you can only grab previous SDKs at the moment.
alexisnorman··on One in every 600 websites has .git exposed
I'm surprised this isn't higher up. Are there any arguments against ENV variables in favor of something else?
alexisnorman··on Greuler – Graph theory visualizations
Awesome! I'm currently piecing together teaching material for an intro to algorithms class and this is excellent. Right about to implement Bellman-Ford's and Dijkstra's.
alexisnorman··on Hammer.js: Add touch gestures to your page
That's really good to know about the double tap functionality. My team was pumped on implementing this into our Rails app and had to give up because of how buggy it was. The whole experience made us extremely envious of Angular's touch directives.
alexisnorman··on Ross Ulbricht Sentenced to Life in Prison

With darknet markets and independent lab testing networks, this type of thing doesn't happen.
I agree that darknet markets are safer than traditional drug markets, but the poisoning risks can still apply. There was recently a huge flux of PMA being distributed as molly on Agora and other markets from sellers who have known to be reputable in the past. If you know anyone that is purchasing this stuff, encourage them to always test it themselves before using.
alexisnorman··on As Office Space Shrinks, So Does Privacy for Workers
Completely agree, this is the way my office is currently setup while they're building additional space for developers and it drives me insane. This PHP CEO tweet describes my situation pretty dead on: https://twitter.com/PHP_CEO/status/549719518420152321
alexisnorman··on Show HN: Watch People Code
The feedback on these streams makes this a really incredible idea. I just watched one where users were constantly noticing syntax errors, etc. and alerting the dev in real time of them. A few people on these streams are learning languages (like Lua) for the first time and powering through these projects with aid from viewers/commenters. Love it.
alexisnorman··on Who Owns Los Angeles?
A group from Code For America came to my town recently (Tempe, AZ) and they address a lot of the issues with access to public data. Was really glad to see things like this exist. http://www.codeforamerica.org
alexisnorman··on I track my boyfriend's movements because I want to trust him more, not less
