alexeichemenda··on France Launches French Tech Ticket, a Startup Visa for Foreign Entrepreneurs
Regarding taxes, you're comparing two very different things. The 15% you're talking about is, as you said, qualified small business rate, which means you have [..] to hold it for more than 5 years. The 56% you're talking about in France is an over simplified number. My company just got acquired (i'm a co-founder), and I can guarantee you I got a better tax deal in France than you will ever get in the US.

I'm not even going to get into the laws debate, but just keep in mind, just like the taxes, it's not at all how you think it is :)

alexeichemenda··on Start-up Launch Power: Product Hunt vs. Hacker News vs. TechCrunch
> But if you are promoting to people who are your friends or are already fans of your product per the original quote, they are not necessarily unbiased and are not necessarily voting on the merit of the product itself.

Their article states : "It is perfectly fine, however, to promote your Product Hunt page on your groups, forums, internal communications [...] community to the featuring on ProductHunt, but don’t encourage them to vote one way or another."

They are not including "friends" in there. And when it comes to people who are already fans of your product, no - they're not unbiased. But that's the thing : they tried the product, and loved it. Which is exactly how word of mouth works in real life. You try a product, you love it, and you tell you friends about it. And that's the whole point of PH : surfacing great products.

alexeichemenda··on Start-up Launch Power: Product Hunt vs. Hacker News vs. TechCrunch
[Disclaimer : I know Batch's founder, but this comment will try to be very objective]

Allow me to disagree. Product Hunt is a platform that lets users vote for the best products. Asking for upvotes is wrong, because the people you ask feel obligated to do it. When you let people know you're on Product Hunt, they have the choice to go upvote or not. If it's a good product, they will go and upvote it. But this is the essence of Product Hunt. Filter good products and make other users aware of good products.

You're absolutely right. It's interesting to see that more and more journalists focus on number of clics / views, vs actual engagement. I guess short term metrics like clics / views are one way to go, but definitely not a good one for journalism on the long term.
alexeichemenda··on Show HN: Insights into billions of daily smartphone notifications
And you'll have a lot of statistics there, such as the average number of words / characters used in all of their push notifications, frequency etc. That's really useful to get an overview.
alexeichemenda··on Show HN: Insights into billions of daily smartphone notifications
Hey, I've used the tool a bit and love how easy it is to pull data from a specific app to identify push notifications patterns.
alexeichemenda··on [dead]
I've used the tool a bit, happy to discuss. I think the founders are here as well

Hey, how is it different from node-webkit or atom-shell?
alexeichemenda··on Show HN: Airtable, a real-time spreadsheet-database hybrid
By the area codes provided by EvanMiller (415 = San Francisco, 650 = Palo Alto) I don't think he meant "free first, then they started charging". I think he meant "got acquired" / "pivoted" "went out of business".
alexeichemenda··on Motionlead Makes Mobile Ads Effective Again Thanks To Interactive Design
Hey waps, We don't want to be those guys. This is why the quality of the design is as important as the content of the ad. We can show less ads to users than classic banners / interstitials, more elegant ads, and deliver high-quality content (apps, premium products).

(quick explanation, if an interstitial is being displayed every minute and has a 5% CTR, we can show one every 2 minutes because we have a CTR of 10%. So you can have twice as much -- or more -- ad-free experience time)

alexeichemenda··on Motionlead Makes Mobile Ads Effective Again Thanks To Interactive Design
Hi there, You're absolutely right, the goal here was to show how creative advertisers can be with this technology. We can also display more discrete and elegant ads, this is all based on what our publishers allow and advertisers want. However, we always want to make sure the ad is more pleasant than an interstitial full screen ad, and you're always more or less still seeing the app. Hope this helps.
alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: Our iPad game hit top 30 in free games, how do we keep the momentum?
Hey, congrats on the success ! I would suggest focusing on retention, social sharing and ratings to keep yourself in a good app store positon.

Retention : add push notifications, try to stay in touch with the users (with limited offers for example as mentioned below) and to make the user come back to the app

Social sharing : I would suggest creating a leaderboard, and connecting to FB to share your results and compete against others.

Ratings : Implement an incentive to let the user rate your app, to grow the number of reviews you have.

PS : I didn't have time to download the app, so maybe you already did this. I will download it in a couple of hours and will edit. If you want to chat more, alexei [dot] chemenda [at] gmail [dot] com !

There's another thread on the homepage (Show HN of Breach) where the developers of the product are active. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8016307
alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: How do you start a website that requires user contribution?
You have to create the content by yourself. No user is going to create your content magically on an empty site. So build your content (it will be a rather long process), and then it will (not organically) generate interest.

Also, target your friends / people you know that could use your website, and ask them which content they would like to see, if they want to help you build the initial content.

What's your website ?

alexeichemenda··on Lyft Plus
I've used Uber, Lyft & Summon (in SF). I was a big fan of Uber (UberX), but Summon is much cheaper than UberX or Lyft (I think 15% is the official number).

And yes, I do feel sometimes there are less drivers, but I just open those apps in order : Summon, then UberX, then Lyft.

I also talked a lot to the drivers (of all companies), and it seems like Uber drivers are really treated like shit, which is mainly why I switched to competitors.

alexeichemenda··on Poll: How do you manage your passwords?
This was an example. I am not actually concatenating 1st+2nd letter to my password. You can use the 1st letter of domain name in the middle of the base password, you can add the first and the last letter, resulting in a letter which will be added to the beginning etc. And in a 10-12 character password, it's very hard to 'notice' this.
alexeichemenda··on Poll: How do you manage your passwords?
I have a base password that I use on every website.

Then for every website, I (for example) use the first letter of the domain name and the last letter, add it to the beginning of my password. Then I take the last letter of the domain name and add it to the end of my password.

This way I only have to remember my tiny algorithm + my base password.

alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: Why is Apple App store asking password for free apps?
You're right, me too. But this is valid only for iPhone 5S. I'm talking more globally across Apple devices.
alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: Why is Apple App store asking password for free apps?
And also apps aren't necessarily sandboxed on your computer, so you could damage your computer by installing new software. (Which is why you want to make sure the owner is installing it.) You can't do that on an iPhone anyway, so it seems like identity check is useless.
alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: Why is Apple App store asking password for free apps?
Yes but the User Experience on a computer is not the same at all. On a real keyboard, typing is much faster and therefore the pain is much smaller. Mobile is on the go, usually apps are designed to make everything easier for the end user, and Apple is usually good at doing exactly that. Except here.
alexeichemenda··on Up Vote Arrows
I think you need a couple of activity (comment for example) on your account before you can upvote.
alexeichemenda··on Ask HN: is it ok to ShowHN my closed beta startup?
I'd be OK signing up with a given code and give feedback.
alexeichemenda··on Flappy Bird in HTML5
Hey ! Pretty cool, anyway to use add keyboard management ? Makes too much noise to click everytime.. But cool version !

They have changed the title a couple of times, it was not this title when reuters initially published the article.
alexeichemenda··on Google to own $750 million Lenovo stake after Motorola deal closes: HK exchange
Thanks, I've changed the link now.
alexeichemenda··on Google to own $750 million Lenovo stake after Motorola deal closes: HK exchange
Yes they did. Don't really know why, but it was fine a couple of minutes ago.
alexeichemenda··on Sold just got acquired by Dropbox and closed their company
I'm sorry, but I do not fully understand your comment. "It could disappear tomorrow" ? Sold has written on their blog that they are shutting down their company..
alexeichemenda··on Sold just got acquired by Dropbox and closed their company
Congrats on the acquisition ! Can we know a little more about who (if not all) of the team will be joining Dropbox ? How many people were working at Sold ?
alexeichemenda··on Show HN: A news search engine – need feedback
Have you thought about building an API to let websites use it with their own content ? Also, a search engine would be pretty cool ;) Instead of clicking on an item in circle #1 and then sub-section in circle #2, user could type his own keyword in circle #1 and add his own sub-section in circle #2. Obviously you can already do this on Google using + and all the others signs, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people do not know how to use it.
