alexbilbie··on What's within a 10-minute walk in 50 European cities
The good to know points are very strange; looking at London:

| Most Londoners socialize in their own neighborhood and rarely cross the river -- pick your area carefully because it becomes your whole world.

This just flat out isn't true and is a bit of a historic trope

| Council tax varies wildly by borough, so two flats at the same rent can cost hundreds different per year in total.

Council tax is defined by the value of the property, not by the rent

| The Overground and Elizabeth Line have completely changed which neighborhoods are convenient -- don't just look at Tube maps.

The tube maps show the Overground and Elizabeth Lines as well as all the other TFL managed services. A better map of where is "convenient" is this https://neilgarratt.com/campaigns/improving-travel-times/

Having said that I 100% agree with the rest:

| Sunday in London is genuinely excellent with markets, roasts in pubs, and park life -- it's the city's secret best day.

| Cycling has become a serious commuting option with protected lanes expanding every year, especially south of the river.

alexbilbie··on Google debuts device-bound session credentials against session hijacking
There’s going to be a lot of LinkedIn scrapers and tools that are going to stop working if LinkedIn adopt this - a lot of these tools work off particular session cookies you share with them
alexbilbie··on Dame Stephanie "Steve" Shirley CH has passed away aged 91
For those who don't know, Dame Stephanie “Steve” Shirley was a British entrepreneur and philanthropist, famous for founding Freelance Programmers in 1962 - a pioneering software company that primarily employed women working from home, decades before remote work was normal.

She changed her name to Stephanie and later adopted “Steve” as a professional first name to overcome gender bias in business correspondence - male clients were more likely to respond.

She came to Britain as a child refugee via the Kindertransport in 1939.

You can read more about her story here - https://www.steveshirley.com/

alexbilbie··on Ancient law requires a bale of straw to hang from Charing Cross rail bridge
Its an ancient practise, codified into law in 2012 when the regulatory framework was re-codified from multiple laws like Port of London Act 1908 as well as time immemorial acts like this.

alexbilbie··on Europe embraces rent controls, a policy that never works
Rent control is not a neoliberal policy - neoliberalism promotes free markets and de-regulation with which rent control does not align to.
alexbilbie··on Stripe's API was down
That’s a fair point about creating Stipe tokens.

In my experience (processing several thousand payments with Stripe daily) when there are blips they do seem to be isolated to specific endpoints/entities.

alexbilbie··on Stripe's API was down
Create your Stripe token client side, send it to your API, indicate to the user that the payment is processing.

Your backend stores the PCI-compliant Stripe token in a queue which a worker processes as and when it can - therefore allowing you to mitigate Stripe down time.

The issues then become one of UX if the payment fails.

alexbilbie··on The Illustrated Word2vec
Thank you so much for writing this. As a software developer with some familiarity with ML concepts and terminology (I’d heard of word2vec for example) I found this post really easy to follow along with.
alexbilbie··on Running Fast SQL on DynamoDB Tables
If you're running this regularly (e.g. once an hour) to dump tables the cost of Glue can really add up due a minimum runtime length.

We switched to a scheduled Fargate task to dump data from DynamoDB into S3 as parquet files. It's really reliable, costs us ~$4/month and completely configurable.

A P45 is the official document you receive when you leave employment (fired or not), it isn’t slang for anything though you may be threatened with a P45
alexbilbie··on Amazon Aurora Serverless
If your DB load is consistent and the cost of serverless outweights standard instance then yes go for a standard instance.

However if your DB load is very spiky then serverless Aurora might be cheaper than running an over provisioned instance.

alexbilbie··on How to become a bank (2016)
The FCA are very consumer conscious - look at the threats of significant fines towards TSB for just a few days of their app and website being offline.
alexbilbie··on Object Storage: AWS vs Google Cloud Storage vs Azure Storage vs DigitalOcean
The SLA governs availability.

Details of durability here https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/DataDurabili...

alexbilbie··on Object Storage: AWS vs Google Cloud Storage vs Azure Storage vs DigitalOcean
What is the durability objects stored with DO? S3 offers 11x9s of durability.

Likewise what is the replication story? Can you get event notifications when objects are uploaded/deleted? Is there versioning? Static website hosting? Lifecycle management?

alexbilbie··on Ask HN: What is setup for your static blog generator?
You can use AWS Certificate Manager to generate a free auto-renewing certificate and associate that with your CloudFront distribution.

Will simplify your stack a little by removing the LE step

alexbilbie··on Terraforming 1Password
Forgive the self promotion but I'm building a subscription video site - http://stackleap.com/ - to teach people how to build and deploy to AWS infrastructure.

The difference between StackLeap and sites like acloud.guru is that I'm focussing on the day to day stuff rather than high level concepts you need to know to pass the certification exams.

I'm hoping to launch a beta in the next few weeks.

Making Tax Digital's aim is to massively simplify tax returns (including VAT returns) for both individuals and businesses. It's whole aim it reduce time it takes dealing with taxes and give a live overview of tax obligations rather than waiting until the end of the financial year (or longer) to find out what you owe.

I don't understand how any of that can be considered contentious especially as it's been pushed back to beyond April 2019 for roll out?
