alexandernst··on PsychOS: A Crazy Cool Distro That Pushes Linux Limits
What are these limits that it pushes? And how it do so?
alexandernst··on Why We Don't Shoot Earth's Garbage into the Sun (2019)
There might be a slightly modified version of this question which might actually make sense: "Why we don't shoot nuclear waste into the Sun".

Surely, the cost of storing that type of waste here (on Earth) is very expensive, both from economical perspective and from risk management perspective. It could be very interesting to compare the costs of sending 1kg of nuclear waste into the sun (or out of our solar system, if that makes it cheaper) compared to storing 1kg of nuclear waste anywhere here on Earth, + adding the cost of the infrastructure that is required to actually store and preserve that waste, + adding the cost of people that are required to protect that infrastructure (a facility of some sort), etc...

alexandernst··on Show HN: FizzBuzz purely in Rust's trait system
They are related in that they both implement FizzBuzz in a way that is highly unlikely to be ever used, nor recommended to be used.
alexandernst··on Show HN: FizzBuzz purely in Rust's trait system
Someone looking for the unbeatable https://github.com/EnterpriseQualityCoding/FizzBuzzEnterpris... ?
alexandernst··on Why Developers Hate PHP
I'm still not entirely sure why, in plain 2020, PHP seems to be the only language missing a debugger able to run in a shell.

Python, Ruby, Javascript and others have a "debugger;" statement of some sort that, when hit by the execution flow, will pause the code and let you type stuff in your shell, letting you inspect the code, step forward, etc...

Why does PHP need me to configure an entire IDE or my browser? (I'm looking at you, xdebug). Why can't it have a cli-debugger?

alexandernst··on Ask HN: What PostgreSQL client do you use?
Navicat , it has everything I can ask from a RDBMS client (it even supports NoSQL!), from days transfer, database diffing, scheme reversing, advanced DBA related tasks...
alexandernst··on Ask HN: Any good FOSS alternative to Google's reCAPTCHA?
A quick search revealed the following:

* https://github.com/Lokno/click-captcha

* https://www.phpcaptcha.org

* https://source.netsyms.com/Netsyms/Captcheck

alexandernst··on Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro review: Living the dream
Xcode has git support.
alexandernst··on Why did Slack win out over IRC? (2018)
Because whenever somebody asked for:

* 24/7 presence, the reply was "you can do that with a bouncer"

* backlog, the reply was "you can do that with a bouncer"

* full text search, the reply was "that's up to the client implementation"

* file sharing, the reply was "it's already possible with XDCC"

and so on and so forth.

Basically, it's not that Slack is great, it's because IRC as a whole just refused to adapt to what users actually wanted/needed.

alexandernst··on Japan to fund firms to shift production out of China
A step in the right direction!
alexandernst··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
Where (physically) do you expect 500.000 (a small town example) people garden their own food? They'd need to travel outside town, garden, then get back (and all this while also commuting to work on a daily basis).

Also, the amount of tools every single person would need to buy.

"Decentralisation" is a goof idea, but not feasible in the real world, IMHO. And this is a small town example, leave alone a huge capital like Madrid or Barcelona.

alexandernst··on It is time to create a decentralized public social network
Aren’t there already like 5 or 6?
alexandernst··on Revisiting stable-kernel regressions
Does the Linux Kernel has some sort of Unit Testing Framework? Is it being used? If “no”, then why?
alexandernst··on Joe, a Postgres query optimization bot
But why a Slack app instead of a PG module of some sort...?
alexandernst··on NPM: 429 Too Many Requests
It really must be the end of the world for me to trust and switch to a Chinese NPM mirror.
alexandernst··on Access directly your SQL databases via HTTP. In full security
What problem is this trying to solve?
alexandernst··on Microsoft Is Winning the ‘Cloud War’ Against Amazon
All this is based on a survey. It would be very interesting to know the number of people that participated in that survey and the tech they’re working on.
alexandernst··on Offline and back again: Surviving the PHP 7 upgrade by adding one letter
First of all, it really shouldn't take any brain cycles to figure out that problems were caused by an 'automated upgrade from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.2' (who does that anyways, and why?).

Second, it's almost 2020. Why there still isn't a better way to debug PHP than using die()?

And third, "mysqli" has been the defacto method for SQLing, while "mysql"was deprecated years ago.

I'm not sure why this is even in HN.

alexandernst··on Matestack: Rapidly create interactive UIs in Ruby
I don't really understand what are they fixing here. They point that current web development has shifted to "REST backend" and "SPA frontend", which (according to them) is not a good thing (why?). Their solution is to make you write (again) a "full" MVC-backend that also serves the UI (frontend), and additionally, extend it with another frontend layer (Vue).

IMHO that is not fixing the initial problem they are stating that exists, but making it worse, because now you have to write UI-related code in two languages (ruby and js) instead of the 1 that is currently needed (REST + SPA).

alexandernst··on EHTML: Front-end development can and should be simple
$js_frameworks++;
alexandernst··on CRDT: Conflict-free replicated data type
This was already posted here some months ago.

alexandernst··on We Need to Design Health Care Reform That Puts Patients Before Profits
You don’t need to design anything because that already exists in Europe. It’s called public health care.
alexandernst··on What happens when a city bans cars from its streets?
> where no vehicles are allowed whatsoever

Food (just to put an example) will pop up in the stores out of thin air.

alexandernst··on RxBar co-founder Peter Rahal on life after becoming a millionaire
You write post on medium.
alexandernst··on The ReMarkable Tablet: A Review
For the price it has, you could as well buy an iPad Pro, which will do literally anything the ReMarkable will do, but better.
alexandernst··on German regulator says it discovered new illegal software on Daimler diesels
How about requiring people on HN to stop living in a multicolor bubble? Requiring a company to release it's own software implementation of it's own patent is just childish, simplifying things like a 5 years old.
alexandernst··on German regulator says it discovered new illegal software on Daimler diesels
Yes, that will be a complete success with anything coming from/going to China. Because we all know that they respect IP.
alexandernst··on German regulator says it discovered new illegal software on Daimler diesels
Neither hardware IMHO.

Unless, you could somehow prevent competitors from stealing I+D. Which you can't. So closed source it is (that makes things harder for competitors).

alexandernst··on VMware to Acquire Bitnami
How so? They don't have any actual stock. They have options to stock.
alexandernst··on VMware to Acquire Bitnami
You're missing the point of what Bitnami actually does. Bitnami isn't helping "enterprise IT" to install Wordpress. They are helping AWS/GCP/Azure/etc... to attract more users with less effort. It's kind of "hey, random guy that has no idea how to install Wordpress! Do you want to get a Wordpress up and running in <your favourite cloud provider> in less than a minute?".

Edit: look at the comment right after mine. Perfect proof.
